A Multiscale Investigation of Habitat Use and Within-river Distribution of Sympatric Sand Darter Species

The western sand darter Ammocrypta clara, and eastern sand darter Ammocrypta pellucida are sand-dwelling fishes of conservation concern. Past research has emphasized the importance of studying individual populations of conservation concern, while recent research has revealed the importance of incorporating landscape scale processes that structure habitat mosaics and local populations. We examined habitat use and distributions of western and eastern sand darters in the lower Elk River of West Virginia. At the sandbar habitat use scale, western sand darters were detected in sandbars with greater area, higher proportions of coarse grain sand and faster bottom current velocity, while the eastern sand darter used a wider range of sandbar habitats. The landscape scale analysis revealed that contributing drainage area was an important predictor for both species, while sinuosity, which presumably represents valley type also contributed to the western sand darter’s habitat suitability. Sandbar quality (area, grain size, and velocity) and fluvial geomorphic variables (drainage area and valley type) are likely key driving factors structuring sand darter distributions in the Elk River. This multiscale study of within-river species distribution and habitat use is unique, given that only a few sympatric populations are known of western and eastern sand darters

VALIDATING CONTINGENT VALUATION WITH SURVEYS OF EXPERTS

Contingent-valuation estimates for white-water boating passengers are compared with Likert ratings by river guides. The approach involves asking whether passengers and their guides ordinally rank alternative flows the same. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Contingent Valuation Panel (1993) suggested "one might want to compare its (contingent-valuation's) outcome with that provided by a panel of experts." River guides constitute a counterfactual panel of "experts." For commercial trips, optimum flows are 34,000 cfs and 31,000 cfs for passengers and guides, and the comparable figures for private trips are 28,000 cfs and 29,000 cfs. In the NOAA Panel framework, passengers can evaluate the consequences of various river flows and translate this into contingent-valuation responses.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Planetary systems around close binary stars: the case of the very dusty, Sun-like, spectroscopic binary BD+20 307

Field star BD+20 307 is the dustiest known main sequence star, based on the fraction of its bolometric luminosity, 4%, that is emitted at infrared wavelengths. The particles that carry this large IR luminosity are unusually warm, comparable to the temperature of the zodiacal dust in the solar system, and their existence is likely to be a consequence of a fairly recent collision of large objects such as planets or planetary embryos. Thus, the age of BD+20 307 is potentially of interest in constraining the era of terrestrial planet formation. The present project was initiated with an attempt to derive this age using the Chandra X-ray Observatory to measure the X-ray flux of BD+20 307 in conjunction with extensive photometric and spectroscopic monitoring observations from Fairborn Observatory. However, the recent realization that BD+20 307 is a short period, double-line, spectroscopic binary whose components have very different lithium abundances, vitiates standard methods of age determination. We find the system to be metal-poor; this, combined with its measured lithium abundances, indicates that BD+20 307 may be several to many Gyr old. BD+20 307 affords astronomy a rare peek into a mature planetary system in orbit around a close binary star (because such systems are not amenable to study by the precision radial velocity technique).Comment: accepted for ApJ, December 10, 200

Error Avoiding Quantum Codes and Dynamical Stabilization of Grover's Algorithm

    Get PDF
An error avoiding quantum code is presented which is capable of stabilizing Grover's quantum search algorithm against a particular class of coherent errors. This error avoiding code consists of states only which are factorizable in the computational basis. Furthermore, its redundancy is smaller than the one which is achievable with a general error correcting quantum code saturating the quantum Hamming bound. The fact that this code consists of factorizable states only may offer advantages for the implementation of quantum gates in the error free subspace

The effect of 2-methoxyethanol and methoxyacetic acid on sertoli cell lactate production and protein synthesis in vitro

Exposure to 2-methoxyethanol (ME) or its major metabolite, methoxyacetic acid (MA), results in spermatocyte depletion and testicular atrophy in experimental animals. The site of spermatogenesis is within the seminiferous tubule. Sertoli cells support spermatogenesis, synthesizing and secreting proteins, and metabolic substrates for utilization by differentiating germ cells in the seminiferous tubule lumen. One of these substrates, lactate, is preferentially metabolized by spermatocytes. Therefore, because germ cells are dependent upon the metabolic products of Sertoli cells, the effect of ME and MA on production of lactate and protein synthesis was measured in cultured rat Sertoli cells. Cell cultures were incubated with ME or MA at 0, 3, or 10 m for up to 12 hr. No significant difference was seen in total protein synthesis as measured by [3H]leucine incorporation. ME and MA had no apparent effect on cell viability. However, lactate concentrations and rates of lactate accumulation were significantly decreased by MA, but not ME, at both 3 and 10 m following incubation for 6, 9, and 12 hr. The results suggest that inhibition of Sertoli cell lactate production resulting from ME or MA exposure could account for the inhibitory action of these compounds on spermatogenesis.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/24672/1/0000091.pd
