    Treatment of Urinary Incontinence in Females: A Physical Therapist\u27s Guide

    p\u3eUrinary incontinence is a common problem for many females in the united states. Most people with this problem believe that their main options for treatment are surgery or medications. People with incontinence, along with their attending physician, often do not realize the types of conservative therapy that are available for the treatment of urinary incontinence in females. As the understanding of urinary incontinence has increased, there has also been an increased awareness of the role of physical therapy in the conservative treatment of the problem. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature regarding the assessment and treatment of urinary incontinence in females. Background information on the anatomy and physiology of the intact urinary system in females, description of the most common types of incontinence, and a discussion of some assessment techniques for the physical therapist will be presented. The study also will provide information on some of the assessment techniques that other health care professionals are involved in. In addition, the most commonly utilized treatment techniques available to physical therapists will be reviewed and treatment guidelines will be outlined

    Reducing Dog Relinquishment to Rescue Centres Due to Behaviour Problems: Identifying Cases to Target with an Advice Intervention at the Point of Relinquishment Request

    Behaviour problems are a leading reason for dogs being relinquished to rescue centres across the world every year. The aim of this study was to investigate whether free behavioural advice would be accepted at the point of an owner requesting to relinquish their dog for behavioural reasons. The call records of 1131 relinquishment requests were reviewed and analysed to establish if the offer of free behaviour advice was accepted. The results showed that advice was accepted in 24.4% of relinquishment requests and behavioural problem was a significant predictor of whether advice was accepted (p p < 0.001) greater for a relinquishment request due to problems with general management behaviours compared to aggression between dogs in the home, representing 4.2% and 20.2% of overall relinquishment requests. These data suggest that owners are prepared to accept behaviour advice at the point of relinquishment request, so advice interventions could have potential to impact the levels of dog relinquishment to rescue centres. The impact of an intervention offering behaviour advice may be limited by overall levels of advice acceptance by owners and therefore complimentary proactive solutions to reduce behavioural relinquishments should also be considered

    SDSS J134441.83+204408.3: A Highly Asynchronous Short-period Magnetic Cataclysmic Variable with a 56 MG Field Strength

    When the accreting white dwarf in a magnetic cataclysmic variable star (mCV) has a field strength in excess of 10 MG, it is expected to synchronize its rotational frequency to the binary orbit frequency, particularly at small binary separations, due to the steep radial dependence of the magnetic field. We report the discovery of an mCV (SDSS J134441.83+204408.3, hereafter J1344) that defies this expectation by displaying asynchronous rotation (Pspin/Porb = 0.893) in spite of a high surface field strength (B = 56 MG) and a short orbital period (114 minutes). Previously misidentified as a synchronously rotating mCV, J1344 was observed by Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite during sector 50, and the resulting power spectrum shows distinct spin and orbital frequencies, along with various sidebands and harmonics. Although there are several other asynchronous mCVs at short orbital periods, the presence of cyclotron humps in J1344's Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectrum makes it possible to directly measure the field strength in the cyclotron-emitting region, and while a previously study estimated 65 MG based on its identification of two cyclotron humps, we revise this to 56 ± 2 MG based on the detection of a third hump and on our modeling of the cyclotron spectrum. Short-period mCVs with field strengths above 10 MG are normally expected to be synchronous, so the highly asynchronous rotation in J1344 presents an interesting challenge for theoretical studies of spin-period evolution

    AbstractEnteroendocrine cells of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract play a central role in metabolism, digestion, satiety and lipid absorption, yet their development remains poorly understood. Here we show that Arx, a homeodomain-containing transcription factor, is required for the normal development of mouse and human enteroendocrine cells. Arx expression is detected in a subset of Neurogenin3 (Ngn3)-positive endocrine progenitors and is also found in a subset of hormone-producing cells. In mice, removal of Arx from the developing endoderm results in a decrease of enteroendocrine cell types including gastrin-, glucagon/GLP-1-, CCK-, secretin-producing cell populations and an increase of somatostatin-expressing cells. This phenotype is also observed in mice with endocrine-progenitor-specific Arx ablation suggesting that Arx is required in the progenitor for enteroendocrine cell development. In addition, depletion of human ARX in developing human intestinal tissue results in a profound deficit in expression of the enteroendocrine cell markers CCK, secretin and glucagon while expression of a pan-intestinal epithelial marker, CDX2, and other non-endocrine markers remained unchanged. Taken together, our findings uncover a novel and conserved role of Arx in mammalian endocrine cell development and provide a potential cause for the chronic diarrhea seen in both humans and mice carrying Arx mutations
