    Time Motion Analysis of Women\u27s Collegiate Indoor Volleyball

    A better understanding of the demands of a sport can be determined by identifying work-to-rest ratios and frequency of high-intensity movements, but limited research has been on indoor volleyball. Video footage of two matches for a mid-level NCAA Division I women\u27s indoor volleyball team was analyzed using time motion analysis. Rally durations (mean of 7.6s), the rest times (mean of 18.8s), and the number of high-intensity movements (total of 1507) were recorded. The outside hitters, middle blockers, and setter performed the greatest number of HIM per rally with means of 0.78, 0.96 and 0.98 respectively and mean HIM/s of 0.031, 0.037, and 0.038 respectively. Total work and total time were calculated, 48.3 minutes and 166.5 minutes respectively. Therefore, the ball was only in play 29.0% of total time. The overall work-to-rest ratio was 0.40:1

    Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare but potentially lethal complication of pregnancy occurring in approximately 1 : 3,000 live births in the United States although some series report a much higher incidence. African-American women are particularly at risk. Diagnosis requires symptoms of heart failure in the last month of pregnancy or within five months of delivery in the absence of recognized cardiac disease prior to pregnancy as well as objective evidence of left ventricular systolic dysfunction. This paper provides an updated, comprehensive review of PPCM, including emerging insights into the etiology of this disorder as well as current treatment options

    Abstract: In 1978 the local government in the District of Columbia approved a measure to tax up to 70% of the profits made on residential speculation. The tax was the first of its kind in the USA. But, it was quickly overturned and deemed by supporters and opponents a failure. Based on 10 months of archival research and interviews in Washington, DC, this paper examines how property rights became a narrative barrier that tax supporters could not overcome. By narrative barrier, I mean the set of rules that shaped how speculation was discussed. Tax supporters did not publicly convey a counterhegemonic vision of how tenure security and economic wealth could be achieved for black residents through means other than private ownership and real estate investment. This paper contributes to understandings of housing markets, housing crises, and intersections between housing justice and property rights

    Shifting more than the goal posts: developing classroom norms of inquiry-based learning in mathematics

    The 3-year study described in this paper aims to create new knowledge about inquiry norms in primary mathematics classrooms. Mathematical inquiry addresses complex problems that contain ambiguities, yet classroom environments often do not adopt norms that promote curiosity, risk-taking and negotiation needed to productively engage with complex problems. Little is known about how teachers and students initiate, develop and maintain norms of mathematical inquiry in primary classrooms. The research question guiding this study is, “How do classroom norms develop that facilitate student learning in primary classrooms which practice mathematical inquiry?” The project will (1) analyse a video archive of inquiry lessons to identify signature practices that enhance productive classroom norms of mathematical inquiry and facilitate learning, (2) engage expert inquiry teachers to collaborate to identify and design strategies for assisting teachers to develop and sustain norms over time that are conducive to mathematical inquiry and (3) support and study teachers new to mathematical inquiry adopting these practices in their classrooms. Anticipated outcomes include identification and illustration of classroom norms of mathematical inquiry, signature practices linked to these norms and case studies of primary teachers’ progressive development of classroom norms of mathematical inquiry and how they facilitate learning

    Inferring to a model: using inquiry-based argumentation to challenge young children's expectations of equally likely outcomes

    Children’s informal reasoning about uncertainty can be considered a product of their beliefs, language, and experiences, much of which is formed outside of formal schooling. As a result, students can adopt informal intuitions that are incompatible with formal reasoning. Although the creation of cognitive conflict has been considered as one means of challenging students’ understandings, prior research in probability suggests that students may simultaneously hold multiple, incompatible understandings without conflict arising. Design-based methodology was adopted to investigate young (7–8 years old) students’ inferential reasoning under uncertainty, using an inquiry-based unit developed around addition bingo. This paper selectively reports on students’ inferences that initially suggested they were tacitly working from a uniform distribution (equiprobability bias), but shifted as students collected empirical data (from a discrete symmetric triangular distribution). Their inferences were challenged using an argumentation framework, with particular emphasis on the need for defensible evidence. Initial findings suggest potential for argumentation and inferential approaches that make students’ conceptions explicit through ‘visibilizing’ their knowledge

    Proposed Design Modifications to Reduce Risk of Operating Rotary Field Mowers

    The primary objective of this project was to reduce risk of injury associated with operating a rotary mower driven by a tractor power take-off (PTO) by developing and evaluating design improvements and determining their economic feasibility. Researchers have concluded that alteration of machinery design has a greater impact on the reduction of accidents than safety training. Implementation of an Operator Presence Sensing System (OPSS) and removal of the PTO are the two injury-reducing, engineering modifications evaluated by this research. Hydraulic power allows this to occur by providing dynamic braking, few moving parts (removal of the PTO), and controllable power. A hydraulic circuit was developed to power the mower and to enable an OPSS. Tractor hydraulics were simulated using a hydraulic training bench. Two mower configurations were tested: 6.55 cm3 rev-1 (0.4 in.3 rev -1) displacement motor with a 0.748 kg blade and 47.5 cm3 rev -1 (2.9 in.3 rev -1) displacement motor with a 9.4 kg blade. A PTO-driven rotary mower was not used to test the circuit due to spatial and safety limitations of the hydraulic training bench. Results from the first mower configuration verified the concepts behind the hydraulic circuit. The second configuration verified the OPSS and indicated the applicability of the circuit to a rotary mower
