    Developments in Agricultural Soil Quality and Health: Reflections by the Research Committee on Soil Organic Matter Management

    The North Central Education and Research Activity Committee (NCERA-59) was formed in 1952 to address how soil organic matter formation and management practices affect soil structure and productivity. It is in this capacity that we comment on the science supporting soil quality and associated soil health assessment for agricultural lands with the goal of hastening progress in this important field. Even though the suite of soil quality indicators being applied by U.S. soil health efforts closely mirrors the “minimum data set” we developed and recommended in the mid-1990s, we question whether the methods or means for their selection and development are sufficient to meet current and emerging soil health challenges. The rush to enshrine a standard suite of dated measures may be incompatible with longer-term goals. Legitimate study of soil health considers soil change accrued over years to decades that influence on- and off-site function. Tailoring of methods to local conditions is needed to effectively apply and interpret indicators for different soil resource regions and land uses. Adherence to a set suite of methods selected by subjective criteria should be avoided, particularly when we do not yet have adequate data or agreed upon interpretive frameworks for many so-called “Tier 1” biological indicators used in soil health assessment. While pooling data collected by producer-groups is one of the most exciting new trends in soil health, standardizing methods to meet broad inventory goals could compromise indicator use for site or application-specific problem solving. Changes in our nation’s research landscape are shifting responsibility for soil stewardship from national and state government backed entities to public-private partnerships. As a result, it is critical to ensure that the data needed to assess soil health are generated by reproducible methods selected through a transparent process, and that data are readily available for public and private sector use. Appropriate methods for engagement need to be applied by public-private research partnerships as they establish and expand coordinated research enterprises that can deliver fact-based interpretation of soil quality indicators within the type of normative soil health framework conceived by USDA over 20 years ago. We look to existing examples as we consider how to put soil health information into the hands of practitioners in a manner that protects soils’ services

    An Experiment Measuring the Effects of Maintenance Tasks on Program Knowledge

    Objective: To ascertain whether programmers gain more knowledge about an unfamiliar program by enhancing the code or documenting the code. The context of this work was investigating whether maintenance programmers faced with an unfamiliar system should start by actively working on the system or spend time passively exploring the system before attempting to make changes. Method: We designed a laboratory experiment where subjects initially either enhanced or documented a program and then we measured how they performed when carrying out a further task on the given code. Our hypothesis was that programmers would gain more knowledge performing one of the two tasks. The experiment was repeated three times with different groups of students, all at the same stage of their education. Results: There was no significant difference between the performance of the two groups who had performed different initial tasks. However, there was a strong correlation between performance in the measured task and the students’ programming ability, as measured by a previous academic assessment. As not all subjects completed the measured task within the given time, we needed to use Kaplan-Meier survival curves and the Cox Proportional Hazard Model to analyse our data. Detailed inspection of the code produced during the experiment revealed some interesting qualitative results. Conclusions: We were unable to show a significant difference between the value of enhancing or documenting code as a way of gaining knowledge about unfamiliar programs. In the context of software maintenance this means that there is no advantage in spending unproductive time documenting code to gain knowledge

    Preconception care for diabetic women for improving maternal and fetal outcomes : a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Background Preexisting diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risk for maternal and fetal adverse outcomes. Despite improvement in the access and quality of antenatal care recent population based studies demonstrating increased congenital abnormalities and perinatal mortality in diabetic mothers as compared to the background population. This systematic review was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of preconception care in improving maternal and fetal outcomes for women with preexisting diabetes mellitus. Methods We searched the following databases, MEDLINE, EMBASE, WEB OF SCIENCE, Cochrane Library, including the CENTRAL register of controlled trials and CINAHL up to December 2009, without language restriction, for any preconception care aiming at health promotion, glycemic control and screening and treatment of diabetes complications in women of reproductive age group with type I or type II diabetes. Study design were trials (randomized and non-randomized), cohort and case-control studies. Of the 1612 title scanned 44 full papers were retrieved of those 24 were included in this review. Twelve cohort studies at low and medium risk of bias, with 2502 women, were included in the meta-analysis. Results Meta-analysis suggested that preconception care is effective in reducing congenital malformation, RR 0.25 (95% CI 0.15-0.42), NNT17 (95% CI 14-24), preterm delivery, RR 0.70 (95% CI 0.55-0.90), NNT = 8 (95% CI 5-23) and perinatal mortality RR 0.35 (95% CI 0.15-0.82), NNT = 32 (95% CI 19-109). Preconception care lowers HbA1c in the first trimester of pregnancy by an average of 2.43% (95% CI 2.27-2.58). Women who received preconception care booked earlier for antenatal care by an average of 1.32 weeks (95% CI 1.23-1.40). Conclusion Preconception care is effective in reducing diabetes related congenital malformations, preterm delivery and maternal hyperglycemia in the first trimester of pregnancy
