A market decision-making model for load aggregators with flexible load
The fast development of renewable energy has resulted in great challenges to the power system, which urgently needs more flexible resources to maintain a system supply/demand balance. This paper established a multi-stage electricity market framework in the presence of a load aggregator (LA) including a day-ahead energy/reserve market and a real-time balanced market. To actively participate in the day-ahead energy market and reserve market, a load profile perception model for LA is proposed to evaluate in detail the response performance of consumers. Meanwhile, a market-bidding model of LA and a market-clearing model of the system operator for the day-ahead market are also established. To actively join the real-time balance market, a market-bidding model of LA for the real-time balance market based on surplus flexible resources is established. The system operator further clears the real-time balance market and dispatches the collected flexible resources according to the system supply-demand state. A modified IEEE 30 bus system is tested and shows that the proposed market framework can effectively promote consumers to respond to system regulation requirements and lowers the system supply-demand imbalance risk
The Language Barrier: Dissecting Safety Challenges of LLMs in Multilingual Contexts
As the influence of large language models (LLMs) spans across global
communities, their safety challenges in multilingual settings become paramount
for alignment research. This paper examines the variations in safety challenges
faced by LLMs across different languages and discusses approaches to
alleviating such concerns. By comparing how state-of-the-art LLMs respond to
the same set of malicious prompts written in higher- vs. lower-resource
languages, we observe that (1) LLMs tend to generate unsafe responses much more
often when a malicious prompt is written in a lower-resource language, and (2)
LLMs tend to generate more irrelevant responses to malicious prompts in
lower-resource languages. To understand where the discrepancy can be
attributed, we study the effect of instruction tuning with reinforcement
learning from human feedback (RLHF) or supervised finetuning (SFT) on the
HH-RLHF dataset. Surprisingly, while training with high-resource languages
improves model alignment, training in lower-resource languages yields minimal
improvement. This suggests that the bottleneck of cross-lingual alignment is
rooted in the pretraining stage. Our findings highlight the challenges in
cross-lingual LLM safety, and we hope they inform future research in this
direction
Association between fasting blood glucose and thyroid stimulating hormones and suicidal tendency and disease severity in patients with major depressive disorder
Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes are reported to be associated with depression. However, their role in the suicide risk in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare thyroid dysfunction and diabetes between suicide attempters and non-suicide attempters in a large sample of first-episode drug-naïve (FEND) MDD patients. A descriptive study was conducted on 1279 Chinese outpatients with a diagnosis of first-episode MDD. Their sociodemographic information, blood levels of thyroid hormones, glucose, lipids and body mass index (BMI) parameters were collected. The positive subscales of the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) were measured for psychotic, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Our results showed that compared with non-suicide attempters (P<0.01), suicide attempters had statistically higher scores on HAMD, HAMA and PANSS psychotic symptoms, as well as higher thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) serum levels, glucose, anti-thyroglobulin (A-TG), anti-thyroid peroxidase (A-TPO), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (all with P<0.001). These results revealed that TSH, A-TG, A-TPO, TC, TG and LDL-C may be promising biomarkers of suicide risk in MDD, implying the importance of regular assessment of blood glucose level and thyroid function parameters for suicide prevention, along with possible treatment for impaired thyroid function and diabetes for the suicide intervention in MDD patients. Such patients with abnormal blood sugar and TSH must undergo thorough screening for suicidal ideation
Efficacy and safety of bevacizumab in patients with malignant melanoma: a systematic review and PRISMA-compliant meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and non-comparative clinical studies
Background: Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive cancer that spreads and metastasizes quickly. In recent years, the antiangiogenic drug bevacizumab has been trialed to treat malignant melanoma. We conducted the first meta-analysis to examine the efficacy and safety of bevacizumab combined with other drugs in malignant melanoma.Methods: We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-comparative clinical studies of bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy, targeted medicine, and interferon to treat malignant melanoma in PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. Meta-analysis of RCT was performed using Review Manager (version 5.4), and non-comparative meta-analysis was performed using R (version 4.0.3). The primary outcome was the objective response rate. Depending on the heterogeneity of the included studies, the pooled outcomes and 95% CI were calculated using either random-effects or fixed-effect models. Subgroup outcomes were calculated with possible relevant variables. Sensitivity analyses were carried out by excluding each study from the highly heterogeneous pooled results in turn. Funnel plot and Begg’s test were used to test the included studies' potential publication bias. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05.Results: This meta-analysis included 20 trials: five RCTs and 15 non-comparative clinical studies with a total of 23 bevacizumab intervention arms. In 14 treatment arms, bevacizumab was combined with chemotherapy drugs such as fotemustine, dacarbazine, carboplatin/paclitaxel, and temozolomide. In six treatment arms, bevacizumab was combined with targeted medicines such as imatinib, everolimus, sorafenib, erlotinib, and temsirolimus. There were also six treatment arms that used bevacizumab in combination with interferon. The pooled objective response rate was 15.8% (95% CI, 11.4%–20.2%). Bevacizumab plus carboplatin/paclitaxel significantly increased the overall survival compared to carboplatin/paclitaxel (HR = 0.64, 95% CI, 0.49-0.85, p < 0.01). Fatigue, nausea, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and neutropenia were the most common adverse events. The pooled incidence of hypertension of all bevacizumab arms in malignant melanoma was 32.4% (95% CI, 24.5%–40.3%).Conclusion: This study showed that bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy might be effective and well-tolerated in patients with stage III or IV unresectable malignant melanoma.Systematic Review Registration: [https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?RecordID=304625], identifier [CRD42022304625]
Association between the lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of incident type 2 diabetes in a healthy population of Northwest China: a retrospective cohort study with a 2-year follow-up period
AimsWe aimed to explore the metabolic features of lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (Lean-NAFLD) and its association with the risk of incident type 2 diabetes in young and middle-aged people.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study of 3001 participants who were enrolled in a health check-up program from January 2018 to December 2020 in the Health Management Center of Karamay People’s Hospital. The age, sex, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, waist circumference (WC), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), lipid profiles, serum uric acid and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) of the subjects were collected. The cutoff point of BMI for lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is <25 kg/m2. A COX proportional hazard regression model was used to analyze the risk ratio of lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease to type 2 diabetes mellitus.ResultsLean NAFLD participants had many metabolic abnormalities, such as overweight and obesity with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Compared with lean participants without nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, the fully adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for lean participants with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease was 3.83 (95% CI 2.02-7.24, p<0.01). In the normal waist circumference group (man<90cm, woman<80 cm), compared with lean participants without NAFLD, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of incident type 2 diabetes for lean participants with NAFLD and overweight or obese participants with NAFLD were 1.93 (95% CI 0.70-5.35, p>0.05) and 4.20 (95% CI 1.44-12.22, p<0.05), respectively. For excess waist circumference (man≥90 cm, woman ≥80 cm) compared with lean participants without NAFLD, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of incident type 2 diabetes for lean participants with NAFLD and overweight or obese participants with NAFLD were 3.88 (95% CI 1.56-9.66, p<0.05) and 3.30 (95% CI 1.52-7.14, p<0.05), respectively.ConclusionAbdominal obesity is the strongest risk factor for type 2 diabetes in lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Beating the break-even point with a discrete-variable-encoded logical qubit
Quantum error correction (QEC) aims to protect logical qubits from noises by
utilizing the redundancy of a large Hilbert space, where an error, once it
occurs, can be detected and corrected in real time. In most QEC codes, a
logical qubit is encoded in some discrete variables, e.g., photon numbers. Such
encoding schemes make the codewords orthogonal, so that the encoded quantum
information can be unambiguously extracted after processing. Based on such
discrete-variable encodings, repetitive QEC demonstrations have been reported
on various platforms, but there the lifetime of the encoded logical qubit is
still shorter than that of the best available physical qubit in the entire
system, which represents a break-even point that needs to be surpassed for any
QEC code to be of practical use. Here we demonstrate a QEC procedure with a
logical qubit encoded in photon-number states of a microwave cavity,
dispersively coupled to an ancilla superconducting qubit. By applying a pulse
featuring a tailored frequency comb to the ancilla, we can repetitively extract
the error syndrome with high fidelity and perform error correction with
feedback control accordingly, thereby exceeding the break-even point by about
16% lifetime enhancement. Our work illustrates the potential of the
hardware-efficient discrete-variable QEC codes towards a reliable quantum

Tetramethylpyrazine ameliorates acute lung injury by regulating the Rac1/LIMK1 signaling pathway
Acute lung injury (ALI) is a respiratory disorder characterized by severe inflammation of the alveoli and lung parenchyma. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), the main active compound in Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort (LC), can protect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Our study aimed to investigate how TMP protects the endothelial cell barrier in pulmonary capillaries. We administered TMP intraperitoneally at different doses and found that acute lung injury in mice was improved, but not in a dose-dependent manner. TMP toxicity was tested in vitro. We observed that LPS-induced cytoskeletal remodeling was inhibited by TMP. Murine ALI was induced as follows: For the 1st hit, LPS (2Â mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally; after 16Â h, for the 2nd hit, LPS (4Â mg/kg) was instilled intratracheally. The mice in treatment groups had TMP or dexamethasone administered intraperitoneally 30Â min prior to the 1st hit and 30Â min past the 2nd hit. Mice were euthanized 24Â h after the last injecting. We measured protein and mRNA levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase real-time PCR (RT-qPCR), respectively. The ultrastructural analysis was performed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the cytoskeleton was observed by immunofluorescence. Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting were used to detect protein expression in the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signal pathway. The results showed that TMP treatment decreased inflammatory cell infiltration and alleviated LPS-induced damage in lung tissue. Also, TMP significantly inhibited the Rac1/LIMK1/ZO-1/occludin signaling pathway. Our findings show that using TMP during sepsis can protect the pulmonary microvascular endothelial cell barrier and suppress inflammation. Therefore, TMP may have a promising therapeutic role in preventing acute lung injury from sepsis
