Venison for the Citadel: Early Historic Tissamaharama, in Ruhuna, Sri Lanka
TissamaharÄma known from historic times as Mahagama is one of the earliest and largest urbanised centres in Sri Lanka, dating from the Early Historic period. As part of the collaborative research programme between the Department of Archaeology of the Government of Sri Lanka and the Commission for Archaeology of Non-European Cultures (KAAK) of the German Archaeological Institute, excavations were conducted at TissamaharÄma from 1992 to 2010. These extensive excavations at the TissamaharÄma citadel have yielded a very large quantity of excellently preserved faunal remains from the Early Historic Period of ca. 500 BCE to 250 BCE. The analysis of these animal bones indicates the presence of a significant component of large mammals notably, deer (Axis axis). Of considerable importance is the rib of a deer with an embedded broken quartz arrowhead, from the microlithic tradition. The deer represented in this sample was presumably part of the supply of venison to the city dwellers, brought from outside. Our data show that microlithic technology had persisted to at least the Early Historic phase in Sri Lanka.

Legged Saddle Querns of South Asia
Legged saddle querns to grind spices and herbal medicine were used from ancient times up to the present day. At times they were placed as offerings which is unusual for objects of daily life. One example is the foundation deposit of the hospital phase on the Citadel of Tissamaharama, 1st century A. D. A second example is an offering pit underneath the pavement of the Yatala Dagoba of uncertain date. Sometimes the surfaces of the querns are decorated with simple ornaments and from time to time they carry auspicious symbols.

Katuwana. A Dutch Fort in Southern Sri Lanka
Katuwana was one of the small fortresses that the Dutch Verenigde Oostindishe Compagnie built in the second half of the 17th century to ensure its boundaries against the territory of the Kandyan kingdom and to promote the Compagnieâs spice trade. The garrison of about 40 soldiers had to prevent raids from the central hills into the low lands of the coastal belt. Excavations were carried out prior to conservation work. Archaeological research was especially interesting as the contemporary witness J. W. Heydt gave a detailed description with a plan and an engraving of the front view of the fortress during its main period in the fi rst half of the 18th century. Most of the exposed rooms around the inner courtyard could be identifi ed due to Heydtâs remarks.
