    Multi-channel active noise cancellation using the DSP56001 (digital signal processor)

    The authors report on the performance of a portable active noise cancellation (ANC) system based around a PC hosted 20-MHz Motorola DSP56001 processor with a four-channel analog input/output (I/O) board connected to the real world via standard consumer audio components. The system will perform active noise cancellation over the frequency range of 65-500 Hz. Quantitative results are presented for the cancellation of single tone noise and of narrowband noise, and a measure of the ANC power spectrum is calculated for various parameters of the filtered-X LMS algorithm in different acoustic environments. Qualitative results based on human hearing perception of the attenuation of various narrowband and real world noise sources are also discussed

    At this writing (Fall 2011), two-thirds of the faculty in higher education are contingent part-time or full-time. Only one-third of the faculty is tenured or on the tenure-track. This selected, annotated bibliography is organized by year of publication, from 1977 to 2010. (An earlier version was published in 2008.) It is the purpose of this publication to facilitate understanding of the meaning and implications of this major change in the structure of higher education. The annotations in the bibliography were written from the perspective of a part-time faculty member, unlike most of the literature, which is written from a management perspective

    On the optimality of subband adaptive filters

    In this paper, we derive a polyphase analysis to determine the optimum filters in a subband adaptive filter (SAF) system. The structure of this optimum solution deviates from the standard SAF approach and presents its best possible solution only as an approximation. Besides this new insight into SAF error sources, the discussed analysis allows to calculate the optimum subband responses and the standard SAF approximation. Examples demonstrating the validity of our analysis and its use for determining SAF errors are presented

    A generalised sidelobe canceller architecture based on oversampled subband decompositions

    Adaptive broadband beamforming can be performed in oversampled subband signals, whereby an independent beamformer is operated in each frequency band. This has been shown to result in a considerably reduced computational complexity. In this paper, we primarily investigate the convergence behaviour of the generalised sidelobe canceller (GSC) based on normalised least mean squares algorithm (NLMS) when operated in subbands. The minimum mean squared error can be limited, amongst other factors, by the aliasing present in the subbands. With regard to convergence speed, there is strong indication that the subband-GSC converges faster than a fullband counterpart of similar modelling capabilities. Simulations are presented

Whereas a generation ago, investigators would study their "favorite" protein or gene and exhaustively catalog the role of this compound in their disease of interest, the appearance of omics has changed the face of medicine such that much of the cutting edge (and fundable!) medical research now evaluates the biology of the disease nearly in its entirety. Couple this with the realization that kidney cancer is a "metabolic disease" due to its multiple derangements in biochemical pathways [1, 2], and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) becomes ripe for data mining using multiple omics approaches

    Money, Real Interest Rates, and Output: A Reinterpretation of Postwar U.S. Data

    This paper reexamines both monthly and quarterly U.S. postwar data to investigate if the observed comovements between money, real interestrates, prices and output are compatible with the money-real interest-output link suggested by existing monetary theories of output, which include both Keynesian and equilibrium models.The major empirical findings are these;1) In both monthly and quarterly data, we cannot reject the hypothesis that the ex ante real rate is exogenous, or Granger-causally prior in the context of a four-variable system which contains money, prices, nominal interest rates and industrial production.2) In quarterly data, there is significantly more information con-tained in either the levels of expected inflation or the innovationof this variable for predicting future output, given current and lagged output, than in any other variable examined (money, actualinflation, nominal interest rates, or ex ante real rates). The effect of an inflation innovation on future output is unambiguously negative. The first result casts strong doubt on the empirical importance of existing monetary theories of output, which imply that money should have a causal role on the ex ante real rates. The second result would appear incompatible with most demand driven models of output.In light of these results, we propose an alternative structural model which can account for the major dynamic interactions among the variables.This model has two central features: i) output is unaffected by money supply;and ii) the money supply process is motivated by short-run price stability.
