Barrier-controlled carrier transport in microcrystalline semiconducting materials: Description within a unified model
A recently developed model that unifies the ballistic and diffusive transport
mechanisms is applied in a theoretical study of carrier transport across
potential barriers at grain boundaries in microcrystalline semiconducting
materials. In the unified model, the conductance depends on the detailed
structure of the band edge profile and in a nonlinear way on the carrier mean
free path. Equilibrium band edge profiles are calculated within the trapping
model for samples made up of a linear chain of identical grains. Quantum
corrections allowing for tunneling are included in the calculation of electron
mobilities. The dependence of the mobilities on carrier mean free path, grain
length, number of grains, and temperature is examined, and appreciable
departures from the results of the thermionic-field-emission model are found.
Specifically, the unified model is applied in an analysis of Hall mobility data
for n-type microcrystalline Si thin films in the range of thermally activated
transport. Owing mainly to the effect of tunneling, potential barrier heights
derived from the data are substantially larger than the activation energies of
the Hall mobilities. The specific features of the unified model, however,
cannot be resolved within the rather large uncertainties of the analysis.Comment: REVTex, 19 pages, 9 figures; to appear in J. Appl. Phy
Physical Structure of Small Wolf-Rayet Ring Nebulae
We have selected the seven most well-defined WR ring nebulae in the LMC (Br
2, Br 10, Br 13, Br 40a, Br 48, Br 52, and Br 100) to study their physical
nature and evolutionary stages. New CCD imaging and echelle observations have
been obtained for five of these nebulae; previous photographic imaging and
echelle observations are available for the remaining two nebulae. Using the
nebular dynamics and abundances, we find that the Br 13 nebula is a
circumstellar bubble, and that the Br 2 nebula may represent a circumstellar
bubble merging with a fossil main-sequence interstellar bubble. The nebulae
around Br 10, Br 52, and Br 100 all show influence of the ambient interstellar
medium. Their regular expansion patterns suggest that they still contain
significant amounts of circumstellar material. Their nebular abundances would
be extremely interesting, as their central stars are WC5 and WN3-4 stars whose
nebular abundances have not been derived previously. Intriguing and tantalizing
implications are obtained from comparisons of the LMC WR ring nebulae with ring
nebulae around Galactic WR stars, Galactic LBVs, LMC LBVs, and LMC BSGs;
however, these implications may be limited by small-number statistics. A SNR
candidate close to Br 2 is diagnosed by its large expansion velocity and
nonthermal radio emission. There is no indication that Br 2's ring nebula
interacts dynamically with this SNR candidate.Comment: 20 pages, Latex (aaspp4.sty), 2 figures, accepted by the Astronomical

Long-Ranged Orientational Order in Dipolar Fluids
Recently Groh and Dietrich claimed the thermodynamic state of a dipolar fluid
depends on the shape of the fluid's container. For example, a homogeneous fluid
in a short fat container would phase separate when transferred to a tall skinny
container of identical volume and temperature. Their calculation thus lacks a
thermodynamic limit. We show that removal of demagnetizing fields restores the
true, shape independent, thermodynamic limit. As a consequence, spontaneously
magnetized liquids display inhomogeneous magnetization textures.Comment: 3 pages, LaTex, no figures. Submitted as comment to PRL, May 199
Determination of the complex microwave photoconductance of a single quantum dot
A small quantum dot containing approximately 20 electrons is realized in a
two-dimensional electron system of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure. Conventional
transport and microwave spectroscopy reveal the dot's electronic structure. By
applying a coherently coupled two-source technique, we are able to determine
the complex microwave induced tunnel current. The amplitude of this
photoconductance resolves photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in the non-linear
regime through the ground state and an excited state as well. The out-of-phase
component (susceptance) allows to study charge relaxation within the quantum
dot on a time scale comparable to the microwave beat period.Comment: 5.5 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. B (Jan. B15 2001
Magnetic properties of polypyrrole - coated iron oxide nanoparticles
Iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by sol -gel process. Insitu
polymerization of pyrrole monomer in the presence of oxygen in iron oxide
ethanol suspension resulted in a iron oxide - polypyrrole nanocomposite. The
structure and magnetic properties were investigated for varying pyrrole
concentrations. The presence of the gamma - iron oxide phase and polypyrrole
were confirmed by XRD and FTIR respectively. Agglomeration was found to be
comparatively much reduced for the coated samples, as shown by TEM. AC
susceptibility measurements confirmed the superparamagnetic behaviour.
Numerical simulations performed for an interacting model system are performed
to estimate the anisotropy and compare favourably with experimental results.Comment: 11 pages,8 figure
Rotational levels in quantum dots
Low energy spectra of isotropic quantum dots are calculated in the regime of
low electron densities where Coulomb interaction causes strong correlations.
The earlier developed pocket state method is generalized to allow for
continuous rotations. Detailed predictions are made for dots of shallow
confinements and small particle numbers, including the occurance of spin
blockades in transport.Comment: RevTeX, 10 pages, 2 figure
A room temperature 19-channel magnetic field mapping device for cardiac signals
We present a multichannel cardiac magnetic field imaging system built in
Fribourg from optical double-resonance Cs vapor magnetometers. It consists of
25 individual sensors designed to record magnetic field maps of the beating
human heart by simultaneous measurements on a grid of 19 points over the chest.
The system is operated as an array of second order gradiometers using
sophisticated digitally controlled feedback loops.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter
From algebra to logic: there and back again -- the story of a hierarchy
This is an extended survey of the results concerning a hierarchy of languages
that is tightly connected with the quantifier alternation hierarchy within the
two-variable fragment of first order logic of the linear order.Comment: Developments in Language Theory 2014, Ekaterinburg : Russian

On FO2 quantifier alternation over words
We show that each level of the quantifier alternation hierarchy within
FO^2[<] -- the 2-variable fragment of the first order logic of order on words
-- is a variety of languages. We then use the notion of condensed rankers, a
refinement of the rankers defined by Weis and Immerman, to produce a decidable
hierarchy of varieties which is interwoven with the quantifier alternation
hierarchy -- and conjecturally equal to it. It follows that the latter
hierarchy is decidable within one unit: given a formula alpha in FO^2[<], one
can effectively compute an integer m such that alpha is equivalent to a formula
with at most m+1 alternating blocks of quantifiers, but not to a formula with
only m-1 blocks. This is a much more precise result than what is known about
the quantifier alternation hierarchy within FO[<], where no decidability result
is known beyond the very first levels
