Tabulation and summary of thermodynamic effects data for developed cavitation on ogive-nosed bodies
Thermodynamic effects data for developed cavitation on zero and quarter caliber ogives in Freon 113 and water are tabulated and summarized. These data include temperature depression (delta T), flow coefficient (C sub Q), and various geometrical characteristics of the cavity. For the delta T tests, the free-stream temperature varied from 35 C to 95 C in Freon 113 and from 60 C to 125 C in water for a velocity range of 19.5 m/sec to 36.6 m/sec. Two correlations of the delta T data by the entrainment method are presented. These correlations involve different combinations of the Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber, and Peclet numbers and dimensionless cavity length
Correlations by the entrainment theory of thermodynamic effects for developed cavitation in venturis and comparisons with ogive data
A semi-empirical entrainment theory was employed to correlate the measured temperature depression, Delta T, in a developed cavity for a venturi. This theory correlates Delta t in terms of the dimensionless numbers of Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber and Peclet, and dimensionless cavity length, L/D. These correlations are then compared with similar correlations for zero and quarter caliber ogives. In addition, cavitation number data for both limited and developed cavitation in venturis are presented
Defect formation in superconducting rings: external fields and finite-size effects
Consistent with the predictions of Kibble and Zurek, scaling behaviour has
been seen in the production of fluxoids during temperature quenches of
superconducting rings. However, deviations from the canonical behaviour arise
because of finite-size effects and stray external fields.
Technical developments, including laser heating and the use of long Josephson
tunnel junctions, have improved the quality of data that can be obtained. With
new experiments in mind we perform large-scale 3D simulations of quenches of
small, thin rings of various geometries with fully dynamical electromagnetic
fields, at nonzero externally applied magnetic flux. We find that the outcomes
are, in practice, indistinguishable from those of much simpler Gaussian
analytical approximations in which the rings are treated as one-dimensional

Using keystroke logging to understand writers’ processes on a reading-into-writing test
Background
Integrated reading-into-writing tasks are increasingly used in large-scale language proficiency tests. Such tasks are said to possess higher authenticity as they reflect real-life writing conditions better than independent, writing-only tasks. However, to effectively define the reading-into-writing construct, more empirical evidence regarding how writers compose from sources both in real-life and under test conditions is urgently needed. Most previous process studies used think aloud or questionnaire to collect evidence. These methods rely on participants’ perceptions of their processes, as well as their ability to report them.
Findings
This paper reports on a small-scale experimental study to explore writers’ processes on a reading-into-writing test by employing keystroke logging. Two L2 postgraduates completed an argumentative essay on computer. Their text production processes were captured by a keystroke logging programme. Students were also interviewed to provide additional information. Keystroke logging like most computing tools provides a range of measures. The study examined the students’ reading-into-writing processes by analysing a selection of the keystroke logging measures in conjunction with students’ final texts and interview protocols.
Conclusions
The results suggest that the nature of the writers’ reading-into-writing processes might have a major influence on the writer’s final performance. Recommendations for future process studies are provided
An examination of the relationship of governance structure and performance: Evidence from banking companies in Bangladesh
Corporate governance has become increasingly important in developed and developing countries just after a series of corporate scandals and failures in a number of countries. Corporate governance structure is often viewed as a means of corporate success despite prior studies reveal mixed, somewhere conflicting and ambiguous, and somewhere no relationship between governance structure and performance. This study empirically investigates the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and financial performance of listed banking companies in Bangladesh by using two multiple regression models. The study reveals that a good number of companies do not comply with the regulatory requirements indicating remarkable shortfall in corporate governance practice. The companies are run by the professional managers having no duality and no ownership interest for which they are compensated by high remuneration to curb agency conflict. Apart from some inconsistent relationship between some corporate variables, the corporate governance mechanisms do not appear to have significant relationship with financial performances. The findings reveal an insignificant negative impact or somewhere no impact of independent directors and non-independent non-executive directors on the level of performance that strongly support the concept that the managers are essentially worthy of trust and earn returns for the owners as claimed by stewardship theory. The study provides support for the view that while much emphasis on corporate governance mechanisms is necessary to safeguard the interest of stakeholders; corporate governance on its own, as a set of codes or standards for corporate conformance, cannot make a company successful. Companies need to balance corporate governance mechanisms with performance by adopting strategic decision and risk management with the efficient utilization of the organization’s resources
High pressure transport properties of the topological insulator Bi2Se3
We report x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and magnetoresistance
measurements on Bi2Se3 under high pressure and low temperature conditions.
Pressure induces profound changes in both the room temperature value of the
electrical resistivity as well as the temperature dependence of the
resistivity. Initially, pressure drives Bi2Se3 towards increasingly insulating
behavior and then, at higher pressures, the sample appears to enter a fully
metallic state coincident with a change in the crystal structure. Within the
low pressure phase, Bi2Se3 exhibits an unusual field dependence of the
transverse magnetoresistance that is positive at low fields and becomes
negative at higher fields. Our results demonstrate that pressures below 8 GPa
provide a non-chemical means to controllably reduce the bulk conductivity of
Bi2Se3
