Formation of fundamental structures in Bose-Einstein Condensates
The meanfield interaction in a Bose condensate provides a nonlinearity which
can allow stable structures to exist in the meanfield wavefunction. We discuss
a number of examples where condensates, modelled by the one dimensional Gross
Pitaevskii equation, can produce gray solitons and we consider in detail the
case of two identical condensates colliding in a harmonic trap. Solitons are
shown to form from dark interference fringes when the soliton structure,
constrained in a defined manner, has lower energy than the interference fringe
and an analytic expression is given for this condition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, requires ioplppt.st

Collisions of cold magnesium atoms in a weak laser field
We use quantum scattering methods to calculate the light-induced collisional
loss of laser-cooled and trapped magnesium atoms for detunings up to 30 atomic
linewidths to the red of the 1S_0-1P_1 cooling transition. Magnesium has no
hyperfine structure to complicate the theoretical studies. We evaluate both the
radiative and nonradiative mechanisms of trap loss. The radiative escape
mechanism via allowed 1Sigma_u excitation is dominant for more than about one
atomic linewidth detuning. Molecular vibrational structure due to
photoassociative transitions to bound states begins to appear beyond about ten
linewidths detuning.Comment: 4 pages with 3 embedded figure
Optical dipole force on ladder-like three-level atomic systems driven by chirped few-cycle-pulse laser fields
We report a study on the optical dipole force in a ladder like three level
atomic systems in the context of coherent population transfer with the chirped
few-cycle-pulse laser fields. The phenomenon of coherent population transfer is
investigated by numerically solving the appropriate density matrix equations
beyond the rotating wave approximation. On the other hand, optical dipole force
is calculated by numerically solving the force equation and density matrix
equations self-consistently. By analysing the centre-of-mass motion, it is
shown that the optical dipole force with chirped pulses may be used for
focusing and defocusing of atoms in an atomic beam similar to the near or
non-resonant optical dipole force. Moreover, the robustness of the population
transfer against the variation of the pulse parameters and the effect of the
variation of the Rabi frequencies and the chirp rates on the optical dipole
force are also investigated. The proposed scheme may open new perspectives in
the focusing and de-focusing of atoms and molecules in an atomic beam, since
this scheme mitigates the demand for the generation of transform-limited pulse
laser fields at arbitrary frequencies
Interference scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities in Bose-Einstein condensates
Light-induced nonlinear terms in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation arise from the
stimulated coherent exchange of photons between two atoms. For atoms in an
optical dipole trap this effect depends on the spatial profile of the trapping
laser beam. Two different laser beams can induce the same trapping potential
but very different nonlinearities. We propose a scheme to measure light-induced
nonlinearities which is based on this observation.Comment: 2 figure
The DEEP2 Redshift Survey: Lyman Alpha Emitters in the Spectroscopic Database
We present the first results of a search for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in
the DEEP2 spectroscopic database that uses a search technique that is different
from but complementary to traditional narrowband imaging surveys. We have
visually inspected ~20% of the available DEEP2 spectroscopic data and have
found nine high-quality LAEs with clearly asymmetric line profiles and an
additional ten objects of lower quality, some of which may also be LAEs. Our
survey is most sensitive to LAEs at z=4.4-4.9 and that is indeed where all but
one of our high-quality objects are found. We find the number density of our
spectroscopically-discovered LAEs to be consistent with those found in
narrowband imaging searches. The combined, averaged spectrum of our nine
high-quality objects is well fit by a two-component model, with a second,
lower-amplitude component redshifted by ~420 km/s with respect to the primary
Lyman-alpha line, consistent with large-scale outflows from these objects. We
conclude by discussing the advantages and future prospects of blank-sky
spectroscopic surveys for high-z LAEs.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Higher-order corrections to the short-pulse equation
Using renormalization group techniques, we derive an extended short- pulse
equation as approximation to a nonlinear wave equation. We investigate the new
equation numerically and show that the new equation captures efficiently
higher- order effects on pulse propagation in cubic nonlinear media. We
illustrate our findings using one- and two-soliton solutions of the first-order
short-pulse equation as initial conditions in the nonlinear wave equation
