Evaluation of the optical conductivity tensor in terms of contour integrations
For the case of finite life-time broadening the standard Kubo-formula for the
optical conductivity tensor is rederived in terms of Green's functions by using
contour integrations, whereby finite temperatures are accounted for by using
the Fermi-Dirac distribution function. For zero life-time broadening, the
present formalism is related to expressions well-known in the literature.
Numerical aspects of how to calculate the corresponding contour integrals are
also outlined.Comment: 8 pages, Latex + 2 figure (Encapsulated Postscript
Electrical transport properties of bulk NiFe alloys and related spin-valve systems
Within the Kubo-Greenwood formalism we use the fully relativistic,
spin-polarized, screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method together with the
coherent-potential approximation for layered systems to calculate the
resistivity for the permalloy series NiFe. We are able to
reproduce the variation of the resistivity across the entire series; notably
the discontinuous behavior in the vicinity of the structural phase transition
from bcc to fcc. The absolute values for the resistivity are within a factor of
two of the experimental data. Also the giant magnetoresistance of a series of
permalloy-based spin-valve structures is estimated; we are able to reproduce
the trends and values observed on prototypical spin-valve structures.Comment: 6 pages, ReVTeX + 4 figures (Encapsulated Postscript), submitted to

Constraints on positron annihilation kinematics in the inner Galaxy
Context. The annihilation of cosmic positrons with electrons in the interstellar medium results in the strongest persistent γ-ray line signal in the sky. For the past 50 yr, this 511 keV emission - predominantly from the galactic bulge region and from a low surface-brightness disk - has puzzled observers and theoreticians. A key issue for understanding positron astrophysics is found in cosmic-ray propagation, especially at low kinetic energies (≲ 10 MeV). Aims. We want to shed light on how positrons propagate and the resulting morphology of the annihilation emission. We approach this "positron puzzle" by inferring kinematic information of the 511 keV line in the inner radian of the Galaxy. This constrains propagation scenarios and positron source populations in the Milky Way. Methods. By dissecting the positron annihilation emission as measured with INTEGRAL/SPI, we derived spectra for individual and independent regions in the sky. The centroid energies of these spectra around the 511 keV line are converted into Doppler shifts, representing the line-of-sight velocity along different galactic longitudes. This results in a longitude-velocity diagram of positron annihilation. From high-resolution spectra, we also determined Doppler-broadening from γ-ray line shape parameters to study annihilation conditions as they vary with galactic longitude. Results. We found line-of-sight velocities in the 511 keV line that are consistent with zero, as well as with galactic rotation from CO measurements (2-3 km s -1 deg -1), and measurements of radioactive 26Al (7.5-9.5 km s -1 deg -1). The velocity gradient in the inner ±30° is determined to be 4 ± 6 km s -1 deg -1. The width of the 511 keV line is constant as a function of longitude at 2.43 ± 0.14 keV, with possibly different values towards the disk. The positronium fraction is found to be 1.0 along the galactic plane. Conclusions. The weak signals in the disk leave the question open of whether positron annihilation is associated with the high velocities seen in 26Al or rather with ordinarily rotating components of the Milky Way's interstellar medium. We confirm previous results that positrons are slowed down to the 10 eV energy scale before annihilation and constrain bulk Doppler-broadening contributions to ≲ 1.25 keV in the inner radian. Consequently, the true annihilation conditions remain unclear.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Spin-polarized surface states close to adatoms on Cu(111)
We present a theoretical study of surface states close to 3d transition metal
adatoms (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) on a Cu(111) surface in terms of an
embedding technique using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method.
For each of the adatoms we found resonances in the s-like states to be
attributed to a localization of the surface states in the presence of an
impurity. We studied the change of the s-like densities of states in the
vicinity of the surface state band-edge due to scattering effects mediated via
the adatom's d-orbitals. The obtained results show that a magnetic impurity
causes spin-polarization of the surface states. In particular, the long-range
oscillations of the spin-polarized s-like density of states around an Fe adatom
are demonstrated.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
A New Ultra-dense Group of Obscured Emission-Line Galaxies
We present the discovery of an isolated compact group of galaxies that is
extremely dense (median projected galaxy separation: 6.9 kpc), has a very low
velocity dispersion ( = 67 km s), and where all
observed members show emission lines and are morphologically disturbed. These
properties, together with the lack of spirals and the presence of a prominent
tidal tail make this group one of the most evolved compact groups.Comment: 15 pages,LaTeX, 2figures. A Postscript figure with spectra is

Magnetic properties of Quantum Corrals from first principles calculations
We present calculations for electronic and magnetic properties of surface
states confined by a circular quantum corral built of magnetic adatoms (Fe) on
a Cu(111) surface. We show the oscillations of charge and magnetization
densities within the corral and the possibility of the appearance of
spin--polarized states. In order to classify the peaks in the calculated
density of states with orbital quantum numbers we analyzed the problem in terms
of a simple quantum mechanical circular well model. This model is also used to
estimate the behaviour of the magnetization and energy with respect to the
radius of the circular corral. The calculations are performed fully
relativistically using the embedding technique within the
Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Cond. Matt. special issue

Candidate Tidal Dwarf Galaxies in the Compact Group CG J1720-67.8
This is the second part of a detailed study of the ultracompact group CG
J1720-67.8: in the first part we have focused the attention on the three main
galaxies of the group and we have identified a number of candidate tidal dwarf
galaxies (TDGs). Here we concentrate on these candidate TDGs. Absolute
photometry of these objects in BVRJHKs bands confirms their relatively blue
colors, as we already expected from the inspection of optical and near-infrared
color maps and from the presence of emission-lines in the optical spectra. The
physical conditions in such candidate TDGs are investigated through the
application of photoionization models, while the optical colors are compared
with grids of spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models from the
literature. Although from our data self-gravitation cannot be proved for these
objects, their general properties are consistent with those of other TDG
candidates. Additionally we present the photometry of a few ``knots'' detected
in the immediate surroundings of CG J1720-67.8 and consider the possibility
that these objects might belong to a dwarf population associated with the
compact group.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
Supersymmetry, homology with twisted coefficients and n-dimensional knots
Let be any natural number. Let be any -dimensional knot in
. We define a supersymmetric quantum system for with the following
properties. We firstly construct a set of functional spaces (spaces of
fermionic \{resp. bosonic\} states) and a set of operators (supersymmetric
infinitesimal transformations) in an explicit way. Thus we obtain a set of the
Witten indexes for . Our Witten indexes are topological invariants for
-dimensional knots. Our Witten indexes are not zero in general. If is
equivalent to the trivial knot, all of our Witten indexes are zero. Our Witten
indexes restrict the Alexander polynomials of -knots. If one of our Witten
indexes for an -knot is nonzero, then one of the Alexander polynomials
of is nontrivial. Our Witten indexes are connected with homology with
twisted coefficients. Roughly speaking, our Witten indexes have path integral
representation by using a usual manner of supersymmetric theory.Comment: 10pages, no figure
