Interaction-aware Spatio-temporal Pyramid Attention Networks for Action Classification
Local features at neighboring spatial positions in feature maps have high
correlation since their receptive fields are often overlapped. Self-attention
usually uses the weighted sum (or other functions) with internal elements of
each local feature to obtain its weight score, which ignores interactions among
local features. To address this, we propose an effective interaction-aware
self-attention model inspired by PCA to learn attention maps. Furthermore,
since different layers in a deep network capture feature maps of different
scales, we use these feature maps to construct a spatial pyramid and then
utilize multi-scale information to obtain more accurate attention scores, which
are used to weight the local features in all spatial positions of feature maps
to calculate attention maps. Moreover, our spatial pyramid attention is
unrestricted to the number of its input feature maps so it is easily extended
to a spatio-temporal version. Finally, our model is embedded in general CNNs to
form end-to-end attention networks for action classification. Experimental
results show that our method achieves the state-of-the-art results on the
UCF101, HMDB51 and untrimmed Charades.Comment: Accepted by ECCV201
Convolutional Neural Networks-Based MRI Image Analysis for the Alzheimer’s Disease Prediction From Mild Cognitive Impairment
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Identifying MCI subjects who are at high risk of converting to AD is crucial for effective treatments. In this study, a deep learning approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), is designed to accurately predict MCI-to-AD conversion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. First, MRI images are prepared with age-correction and other processing. Second, local patches, which are assembled into 2.5 dimensions, are extracted from these images. Then, the patches from AD and normal controls (NC) are used to train a CNN to identify deep learning features of MCI subjects. After that, structural brain image features are mined with FreeSurfer to assist CNN. Finally, both types of features are fed into an extreme learning machine classifier to predict the AD conversion. The proposed approach is validated on the standardized MRI datasets from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) project. This approach achieves an accuracy of 79.9% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 86.1% in leave-one-out cross validations. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed one outperforms others with higher accuracy and AUC, while keeping a good balance between the sensitivity and specificity. Results demonstrate great potentials of the proposed CNN-based approach for the prediction of MCI-to-AD conversion with solely MRI data. Wave energy conversion by an array of oscillating water columns deployed along a long-flexible floating breakwater
Large-scale spatial configurations combining Wave Energy Converters (WECs) and coastal attenuating-wave facilities have the potential to exploit marine renewable energy sustainably. In this study, an integrated concept of multiple Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) and a very long floating breakwater is introduced. Associated energy extraction, gap resonance and hydroelastic interaction problems are examined. A coupled numerical simulation methodology consisting of a Finite Volume Method (FVM)based solver and a Finite Element Method (FEM) solver, is developed to investigate the strong fluid and structure coupled problem. The fluid-structure information is matched in real-time and the flexible modes of the floating breakwater are obtained by imposing a restrained beam inside the pontoon. The accurate time-domain model is validated against both simulated and measured data. Extensive parametric studies indicate that the energy conversion has a conflict with the wave attenuation in terms of determining the along-shore number of OWCs. The highest energy conversion in medium-period and long-period waves are observed in the OWCs near the end and middle locations, respectively. Besides, the constructive resonant gap effect between OWCs and the breakwater can amplify the peaks of energy conversion efficiency, leads to a sudden collapse in transmission coefficient curves. With an increased sidewall draft, OWCs closer to oblique incident direction generate stronger piston-type and sloshing oscillations. Additionally, compared with a rigid breakwater, the elastic deformation of the breakwater plays a destructive role in wave energy conversion, which is attributed to the out-of-phase interference of multi-mode radiated waves
Evaluation of a village-based digital health kiosks program: A protocol for a cluster randomized clinical trial
Background
To address disparities in healthcare quality and access between rural and urban areas in China, reforms emphasize strengthening primary care and digital health utilization. Yet, evidence on digital health approaches in rural areas is lacking.
Objective
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital's Digital Health Kiosk program, which uses the Dingbei telemedicine platform to connect rural clinicians to physicians in upper-level health facilities and provide access to artificial intelligence-enabled diagnostic support. We hypothesize that our interventions will increase healthcare utilization and patient satisfaction, decrease out-of-pocket costs, and improve health outcomes.
Methods
This cluster randomized control trial will enroll clinics according to a partial factorial design. Clinics will be randomized to either a control arm with clinician medical training, a second arm additionally receiving Dingbei telemedicine training, or a third arm with monetary incentives for patient visits conducted through Dingbei plus all prior interventions. Clinics in the second and third arm will then be orthogonally randomized to a social marketing arm that targets villager awareness of the kiosk program. We will use surveys and Dingbei administrative data to evaluate clinic utilization, revenue, and clinician competency, as well as patient satisfaction and expenses.
Results
We have received ethical approval from Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital (IRB approval number: GD2H-KY IRB-AF-SC.07-01.1), Peking University (IRB00001052-21007), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (323385). Study enrollment began April 2022.
Conclusions
This study has the potential to inform future telemedicine approaches and assess telemedicine as a method to address disparities in healthcare access.

CodeApex: A Bilingual Programming Evaluation Benchmark for Large Language Models
With the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs), there has been a
significant improvement in the programming capabilities of models, attracting
growing attention from researchers. We propose CodeApex, a bilingual benchmark
dataset focusing on the programming comprehension and code generation abilities
of LLMs. CodeApex comprises three types of multiple-choice questions:
conceptual understanding, commonsense reasoning, and multi-hop reasoning,
designed to evaluate LLMs on programming comprehension tasks. Additionally,
CodeApex utilizes algorithmic questions and corresponding test cases to assess
the code quality generated by LLMs. We evaluate 14 state-of-the-art LLMs,
including both general-purpose and specialized models. GPT exhibits the best
programming capabilities, achieving approximate accuracies of 50% and 56% on
the two tasks, respectively. There is still significant room for improvement in
programming tasks. We hope that CodeApex can serve as a reference for
evaluating the coding capabilities of LLMs, further promoting their development

The Effectiveness of Pay-It-Forward in Addressing HPV Vaccine Delay and Increasing Uptake Among 15–18-Year-Old Adolescent Girls Compared to User-Paid Vaccination: A Study Protocol for a Two-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial in China
Background
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination could prevent cervical and other HPV-associated cancers attributable to vaccine-associated HPV types. However, HPV vaccination coverage among women aged 9–18 years old is low in China. Common barriers include poor financial affordability, minimal public engagement, and low confidence in domestically produced HPV vaccines. Pay-it-forward offers an individual a free or subsidized service then an opportunity to voluntarily donate and/or create a postcard message to support future people. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of pay-it-forward as compared to standard-of-care self-paid vaccination to improve HPV vaccine uptake among adolescent girls aged 15–18 years, who are left out in the current pilot free HPV vaccination task force in some parts of China. Methods
This is a two-arm randomized controlled trial in Chengdu, China. Eligible adolescent girls (via caregivers) will be randomly selected and recruited through four community health centers (one in the most developed urban areas, one in higher middle-income and one in lower middle-income suburban areas, and one in the least developed rural areas) using the resident registration list. A total of 320 participants will be randomized into two study arms (user-paid versus pay-it-forward vaccination) in a 1:1 ratio. The intervention assignment will be blinded to recruiters and participants using envelop concealment until the research assistants open the envelop to determine which treatment to deliver to each individual. The primary outcome of the study will be HPV vaccine uptake by administrative data. Secondary outcomes include costs, vaccine hesitancy, and the completion rates of the 3-dose HPV vaccination series. Mouse Strain– and Charge-Dependent Vessel Permeability of Nanoparticles at the Lower Size Limit
Remarkable advancement has been made in the application of nanoparticles (NPs) for cancer therapy. Although NPs have been favorably delivered into tumors by taking advantage of the enhanced permeation and retention (EPR) effect, several physiological barriers present within tumors tend to restrict the diffusion of NPs. To overcome this, one of the strategies is to design NPs that can reach lower size limits to improve tumor penetration without being rapidly cleared out by the body. Several attempts have been made to achieve this, such as selecting appropriate nanocarriers and modifying surface properties. While many studies focus on the optimal design of NPs, the influence of mouse strains on the effectiveness of NPs remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether the vascular permeability of NPs near the lower size limit differs among mouse strains. We found that the vessel permeability of dextran NPs was size-dependent and dextran NPs with a size below 15Â nm exhibited leakage from postcapillary venules in all strains. Most importantly, the leakage rate of 8-nm fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran was significantly higher in the BALB/c mouse strain than in other strains. This strain dependence was not observed in slightly positive TRITC-dextran with comparable sizes. Our results indicate that the influence on mouse strains needs to be taken into account for the evaluation of NPs near the lower size limit
Influenza vaccine uptake among children and older adults in China: a secondary analysis of a quasi-experimental study.
BACKGROUND: Influenza vaccination is the key to prevent influenza-related disease, especially among high-risk populations. However, influenza vaccine uptake in China is low. This secondary analysis of a quasi-experimental trial aimed to understand factors associated with influenza vaccine uptake among children and older people stratified by funding context. METHODS: A total of 225 children (aged 0.5-8 years) and 225 older people (aged 60 years or above) were recruited from three clinics (rural, suburban and urban) in Guangdong Province. Participants were allocated into two groups based on funding contexts: a self-paid group (N = 150, 75 children and 75 older adults) in which participants paid full price for their vaccination; and a subsidized group (N = 300, 150 children and 150 older adults) in which varying levels of financial support was provided. Univariate and multivariable logistic regressions were conducted stratified by funding contexts. RESULTS: Overall, 75.0% (225/300) of participants in the subsidized group and 36.7% (55/150) in the self-paid group got vaccinated. Older adults had lower vaccination rates than children in both funding groups, while both age groups showed much higher uptake in the subsidized group than in the self-paid group (aOR = 5.96, 95% CI: 3.77-9.42, p = 0.001). In the self-paid group, having prior influenza vaccination history of children (aOR:2.61, 95%CI: 1.06-6.42) or older people (aOR:4.76, 95%CI: 1.08-20.90) was associated with increased influenza vaccine uptake compared to those who had no prior vaccination experiences in the family. While in the subsidized group, participants who got married or lived with partners (aOR = 0.32, 0.10-0.98) had lower vaccination uptake than single ones. Trust in providers' advice (aOR = 4.95, 95%CI:1.99, 12.43), perceived effectiveness of the vaccine (aOR: 12.18, 95%CI: 5.21-28.50), and experienced influenza-like illnesses in the family in the past year (aOR = 46.52, 4.10, 533.78) were associated with higher vaccine uptake. CONCLUSIONS: Older people had suboptimal vaccine uptake compared to children in both contexts and need more attention to enhance influenza vaccination. Tailoring interventions to different vaccine funding contexts may help improve influenza vaccination: In self-paid context, motivating people to accept their first ever influenza vaccination may be a promising strategy. In subsidized context, improving public confidence in vaccine effectiveness and providers' advice would be useful
