Erhai Lake is the second largest freshwater lake on the Yunnan Plateau, Southwest China. In recent decades, a number of exotic fish species have been introduced into the lake and the fish community has changed considerably. We evaluated the status of the fish community based on surveys with multimesh gillnet, trap net, and benthic fyke-net between May 2009 and April 2012. In addition, we evaluated the change in the community using historical data (1952-2010) describing the fish community and fishery harvest. The current fish community is dominated by small-sized fishes, including Pseudorasbora parva, Rhinogobius giurinus, Micropercops swinhonis, Hemiculter leucisculus, and Rhinogobius cliffordpopei. These accounted for 87.7% of the 22 546 total specimens collected. Omnivorous and carnivorous species dominated the community. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) plot revealed that the distribution of fishes in the lake is influenced by aquatic plants, water temperature, pH, and season. The abundance of indigenous species has declined sharply, and a majority of endemic species have been extirpated from the lake (a decrease from seven to two species). In contrast, the number of exotic species has increased since the 1960s to a total of 22 at present. The fishery harvest decreased initially following the 1960s, but has since increased due to the introduction of non-native fish and stocking of native fish. The fishery harvest was significantly correlated with total nitrogen, not total phosphorus, during the past 20 years. Based on our results, we discuss recommendations for the restoration and conservation of the fish resources in Erhai Lake.Erhai Lake is the second largest freshwater lake on the Yunnan Plateau, Southwest China. The influences of mechanically and dielectrically imperfect interfaces on the reflection and transmission waves between two piezoelectric half spaces are studied in this paper. First, the secular equations in the traverse isotropic piezoelectric half space are derived from the general dynamic equation. Then, six kinds of imperfect interfaces are considered. These imperfect interfaces include: the mechanically compliant, dielectrically weakly conducting imperfect interface; the mechanically compliant, dielectrically highly conducting imperfect interface; the grounded metallized interface and the low-dielectric interface and their mechanical counterpart, namely, the fixed interface and the slippery interface. These imperfect interface conditions are required to be satisfied by four sets of waves, namely, the quasi-longitudinal wave (QP), the quasi-transverse wave (QSV), the shear horizontal wave (SH) which is decoupled to other waves and the electric-acoustic wave (EA). The algebraic equations resulting from the imperfect interface conditions are solved to obtain the amplitude ratio of various waves and furthermore the reflection and transmission coefficients in terms of the energy flux ratio. The numerical results are obtained for the incident QP wave, the incident QSV wave and the incident SH wave and are validated by the energy conservation principle. The effects of these imperfect interfaces are discussed based on the numerical results. The present study provides useful information for the detection of imperfect interface. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The pivotal role of gonadotropin signaling in regulating gonadal development and functions has attracted much research attention in the past 2 decades. However, the precise physiological role of gonadotropin signaling is still largely unknown in fish. In this study, we have established both LH beta-subunit (lhb) and LH receptor (lhr) knockout zebrafish lines by transcription activator-like effector nucleases. Intriguingly, both homozygous lhb and lhr mutant male fish are fertile. The fertilization rate, sperm motility, and histological structure of the testis were not affected in either lhb or lhr mutant males. On the contrary, homozygous lhb mutant females are infertile, whereas homozygous lhr mutant females are fertile. Folliculogenesis was not affected in either lhb or lhr mutants, but oocyte maturation and ovulation were disrupted in lhb mutant, whereas only ovulation was affected in lhr mutant. Differential expression of genes in the ovary involved in steroidogenesis, oocyte maturation, and ovulation was found between the lhb and lhr mutants. These data demonstrate the essential role of LH signaling in oocyte maturation and ovulation, and support the notion that LH acts through the FSH receptor in the absence of LH receptor. Moreover, the defects of lhb mutant could be partially restored by administration of human chorionic gonadotropin. This in vivo evidence in the present study demonstrates, for the first time in any vertebrate species, that LH signaling is indispensable in female reproduction but not in male reproduction. LH signaling is demonstrated to control oocyte maturation and ovulation in the ovary

The scattering of general SH plane wave by interface crack between two dissimilar viscoelastic bodies

    Get PDF
The scattering of general SH plane wave by an interface crack between two dissimilar viscoelastic bodies is studied and the dynamic stress, intensity factor at the crack-tip is computed. The scattering problem can be decomposed into two problems: one is the reflection and refraction problem of general SH plane waves at perfect interface (with no crack); another is the scattering problem due to the existence of crack. For the first problem, the viscoelastic wave equation, displacement and stress continuity conditions across the interface are used to obtain the shear stress distribution at the interface. For the second problem, the integral transformation method is used to reduce the scattering problem into dual integral equations. Then, the dual integral equations are transformed into the Cauchy singular integral equation of first kind by introduction of the crack dislocation density function. Finally, the singular integral equation is solved by Kurtz's piecewise continuous function method. As a consequence, the crack opening displacement and dynamic stress intensity factor are obtained. At the end of the paper, a numerical example is given. The effects of incident angle, incident frequency and viscoelastic material parameters are analyzed. It is found that there is a frequency region for viscoelastic material within which the viscoelastic effects cannot be ignored

A flow cytometer based protocol for quantitative analysis of bloom-forming cyanobacteria (Microcystis) in lake sediments

A quantitative protocol for the rapid analysis of Microcystis cells and colonies in lake sediment was developed using a modified flow cytometer, the CytoSense. For cell enumeration, diluted sediment samples containing Microcystis were processed with sonication to disintegrate colonies into single cells. An optimized procedure suggested that 5 mg dw (dry weight)/mL dilution combined with 200 W x 2 min sonication yielded the highest counting efficiency. Under the optimized determination conditions, the quantification limit of this protocol was 3.3x10(4) cells/g dw. For colony analysis, Microcystis were isolated from the sediment by filtration. Colony lengths measured by flow cytometry were similar to those measured by microscopy for the size range of one single cell to almost 400 mu m in length. Moreover, the relationship between colony size and cell number was determined for three Microcystis species, including Microcystis flos-aquae, M. aeruginosa and M. wessenbergii. Regression formulas were used to calculate the cell numbers in different-sized colonies. The developed protocol was applied to field sediment samples from Lake Taihu. The results indicated the potential and applicability of flow cytometry as a tool for the rapid analysis of benthic Microcystis. This study provided a new capability for the high frequency monitoring of benthic overwintering and population dynamics of this bloom-forming cyanobacterium.A quantitative protocol for the rapid analysis of Microcystis cells and colonies in lake sediment was developed using a modified flow cytometer, the CytoSense. The internal mechanism affecting life loss caused by a dam-break flood is complicated. On the basis of analyzing the risk formation path, a risk evaluation indicator system was established which included the hazards, exposure and vulnerability factors. Variable Fuzzy Sets theory was introduced into the risk evaluation of life loss risk grades and applied to eight collapsed dams in China. According to the sequence of the risk grades of these dams, the evaluation result was mainly consistent with the actual mortality ranking sequence, showing that the model could be effectively applied to the risk evaluation of life loss in dam-break events. Aimed at the problem of large differences in the downstream population distribution of dams in China, this manuscript suggested that 10,000 people should be the basis for the grouping operation of dams in the risk evaluation. These Variable Fuzzy evaluation models and grouping suggestions could help stakeholders to allocate the funds for dam reinforcement more accurately and provide a scientific basis for the study of dam-break life loss and dam risk management.Safety and Security Scienc

Environmental impact evaluation model of dam breach — Considering the uncertainty feature of environment

The environmental impact of dam breach has the features of complexity and uncertainty. There is a lack of systematic and comprehensive research on the environmental impact of dam breach in China. Considering such fuzziness of environment evaluation and the lack of precise data, this work chooses the method of multi-index comprehensive evaluation. Targeting to solve the uncertainty problem of weight calculation and evaluation model, this work introduces the statistic cloud theory to calculate the weight and variable fuzzy set theory to evaluate the environmental impact. We select seven environmental impact factors, including channel morphology, vegetation coverage, water and soil environment, biodiversity, human ecology, and industrial pollution, are selected to construct the evaluation index system and construct the value standard of them. The models are applied to the dam of Shaheji Reservoir in China. The results show that the environmental impact degree of the reservoir member an extremely serious grade mostly, reaching 0.589. Compared with the evaluation results already done, the result of the proposed models shows that the models are reasonable and scientific, which provides a new method for environmental impact assessment of dam breach considering the uncertainty feature of the environment.Safety and Security Scienc

Development and analysis of a three-dimensional braided honeycomb structure

    No full text
This paper presents the design and development of three-dimensional braided honeycomb structures. The basic principles and braiding process are described. The relationship between braiding parameters and honeycomb geometric parameters is established and several three-dimensional (3D) braided honeycomb fabrics are introduced. Based on the principle of the 3D braiding ‘four-step’ method, the interlaced state of yarns can be changed by controlling the movement of yarn carriers, so the separation and combination of the braid can be controlled, then 3D braided honeycomb fabric can be formed. As the number of braiding cycles of wall length increases, the relative density will gradually decrease, but the number of braiding cycles of free wall length has a greater effect on the relative density. When the number of columns of yarns participating in wall thickness increases, the relative density will gradually increase. The relative density also showed a positive correlation with the braiding angle. With the increase of the opening angle, the relative density gradually decreases, although there is a minimum point after which a little increase is observed. This paper provides significant guidance for designing various 3D braided honeycomb structures and evaluating their relative density, and can be a reference for the design and development of new honeycombs structures.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Bio-based Structures & MaterialsStructural Integrity & Composite

Risk analysis of earth-rock dam breach based on dynamic Bayesian network

    No full text
Despite the fact that the Bayesian network has great advantages in logical reasoning and calculation compared with the other traditional risk analysis methods, there are still obvious shortcomings in the study of dynamic risk. The risk factors of the earth-rock dam breach are complex, which vary with time during the operation period. Static risk analysis, limited to a specific period of time, cannot meet the needs of comprehensive assessment and early warning. By introducing time factors, a dynamic Bayesian network model was established to study the dynamic characteristics of dam-breach probability. Combined with the calculation of the conditional probability of nodes based on the Leaky Noisy-Or gate extended model, the reasoning results of Bayesian networks were modified by updating the data of different time nodes. Taking an earth-rock dam as an example, the results show that it has less possibility to breach and keep stable along the time axis. Moreover, the factors with vulnerability and instability were found effective, which could provide guidance for dam risk management.Safety and Security Scienc
