    State-of-the-art and gaps for deep learning on limited training data in remote sensing

    Deep learning usually requires big data, with respect to both volume and variety. However, most remote sensing applications only have limited training data, of which a small subset is labeled. Herein, we review three state-of-the-art approaches in deep learning to combat this challenge. The first topic is transfer learning, in which some aspects of one domain, e.g., features, are transferred to another domain. The next is unsupervised learning, e.g., autoencoders, which operate on unlabeled data. The last is generative adversarial networks, which can generate realistic looking data that can fool the likes of both a deep learning network and human. The aim of this article is to raise awareness of this dilemma, to direct the reader to existing work and to highlight current gaps that need solving.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1709.0030

    The Labor Supply and Retirement Behavior of China's Older Workers and Elderly in Comparative Perspective

    This paper highlights the employment patterns of China’s over-45 population and, for perspective, places them in the context of work and retirement patterns in Indonesia, Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom. As is common in many developing countries, China can be characterized as having two retirement systems: a formal system, under which urban employees receive generous pensions and face mandatory retirement by age 60, and an informal system, under which rural residents and individuals in the informal sector rely on family support in old age and have much longer working lives. Gender differences in age of exit from work are shown to be much greater in urban China than in rural areas, and also greater than observed in Korea and Indonesia. Descriptive evidence is presented suggesting that pension eligible workers are far more likely to cease productive activity at a relatively young age. A strong relationship between health status and labor supply in rural areas is observed, indicating the potential role that improvements in access to health care may play in extending working lives and also providing some basis for a common perception that older rural residents tend to work as long as they are physically capable.     Atomic-scale identification of novel planar defect phases in heteroepitaxial YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta} thin films

    We have discovered two novel types of planar defects that appear in heteroepitaxial YBa2_2Cu3_3O7δ_{7-\delta} (YBCO123) thin films, grown by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) either with or without a La2/3_{2/3}Ca1/3_{1/3}MnO3_3 (LCMO) overlayer, using the combination of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping for unambiguous identification. These planar lattice defects are based on the intergrowth of either a BaO plane between two CuO chains or multiple Y-O layers between two CuO2_2 planes, resulting in non-stoichiometric layer sequences that could directly impact the high-TcT_c superconductivity

    Resonance tuning of two-photon absorption microcavities for wavelength-selective pulse monitoring

    We show the potential use of a single photodetector for multichannel pulse monitoring. Two-photon absorption in a microcavity structure is used as the nonlinear optical technique for pulse monitoring. Angle tuning of the device allows the resonance to be tuned. For the device studied here that is optimized for 2-ps pulses, a possible tuning range of 55 nm is shown
