    New insight into the causal relationship between Graves’ disease liability and drug eruption: a Mendelian randomization study

    BackgroundGraves’ disease (GD) and drug eruption are closely associated and frequently observed in the clinical setting. However, it remains unclear whether a causal relationship exists between these two conditions. The aim of the study is to investigate whether GD is causal to drug eruptions using two-sample Mendelian randomization.MethodsWe launched a two-sample MR to investigate whether GD is causal to drug eruption using Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from Biobank Japan and FinnGen. Genetic variants were used as instrumental variables to avoid confounding bias. Statistical methods including inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-PRESSO were conducted to identify the robustness of the causal effect.ResultsGenetically predicted GD may increase the risk of drug eruption by 30.3% (OR=1.303, 95% CI 1.119-1.516, p<0.001) in the Asian population. In European populations, GD may increase the generalized drug eruption by 15.9% (OR=1.159, 95%CI 0.982-1.367, p=0.080).ConclusionsWe found GD is potentially causal to drug eruption. This finding expanded the view of the frequently observed co-existence of GD and adverse drug reactions involving the skin. The mechanism remains for further investigation

    Epidemiology of Candida albicans and non-C.albicans of neonatal candidemia at a tertiary care hospital in western China

    Abstract Background Although the majority of Candida infections occur in the developing world, candidemia epidemiology is poorly understood in these countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of non-Candida albicans (non-C. albicans) candidemia among neonates at Liuzhou Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital in China. Methods A retrospective review of all positive blood culture about Candida species in neonatal intensive care unit was conducted between January 2012 and November 2015. Information about demographics, risk factors and outcome of candidemia were collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify the risk factors associated with the development of non-C.albicans candidemia. Results The prevalence of candidemia in infants was 1.4%. Non-C.albicans was responsible for 56.5% of neonatal candidemia. The predisposing factors for development of non-C.albicans candidemia among infants included mechanical ventilation [odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (95%CI) = 3.13, 1.07–9.14; P = 0.037] and use of assisted reproductive technology (OR, 95%CI = 4.52, 1.39–14.77; P = 0.012). The overall mortality rate of candidemia was 8.7% and non-C.albicans attributed to 83.3% of all mortalities. Conclusions Non-C.albicans species are the major cause of candidemia in local neonatal group. The study highlights the urgent needs to evaluate the possibility of development of non-C.albicans candidemia in neonates exposed to these risk factors and much emphasis must be laid on the early implementation of medical intervention to reduce the incidences of candidemia in neonates

    Epidemiology of and risk factors for neonatal candidemia at a tertiary care hospital in western China

    Abstract Background The prevalence and clinical characteristics of neonatal candidemia are poorly understood in western China. The aim of our study was to evaluate the epidemiological features of neonatal candidemia in the Liuzhou Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital. Methods A retrospective case-control study was conducted between January 2012 and November 2015. Electronic databases were reviewed and data on Candida species were isolated from blood cultures and candidemia incidence, risk factors, and mortality were extracted. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to identify risk factors associated with candidemia. Results During the 4-year period, candidemia was identified in 69 newborns, for an incidence rate of 13.6 per 1000 admissions. Prolonged antibiotic therapy duration [odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence incidence (95% CI) = 1.06, 1.01–1.10], total parenteral nutrition [OR, 95% CI = 6.03, 2.10–17.30] and neurodevelopmental impairment (OR, 95% CI = 7.34, 1.18–45.80) were all associated with increased odds of candidemia development in infants (P value was 0.010, 0.001, 0.033, respectively). The overall mortality rate was 7.2% in the candidemia group. Conclusions Prolonged duration of antibiotic therapy, presence of total parenteral nutrition and neurodevelopmental impairment were the major risk factors associated with neonatal candidemia. This study highlights the importance of the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of neonatal candidemia

    Particle Size-Specific Distributions and Preliminary Exposure Assessments of Organophosphate Flame Retardants in Office Air Particulate Matter

    In this study, the concentrations, size-specific distributions, and preliminary exposure assessments of 10 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were investigated in suspended particulate matter collected from offices. OPFRs were detected in a range of 5.00–147.77 ng/m<sup>3</sup>. Tri­(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant analog followed by tri­(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP). Chlorinated OPFRs (TCPP, TCEP, and tris­(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCPP)) contributed to about 77% of the total OPFRs. Size-specific distributions revealed that TCEP, tri-n-propyl phosphate (TnPP), TCPP, and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) shared a similar distribution pattern with a peak in the fraction 4.7–5.8 μm. A peak was also found in the distributions of tricresyl phosphate (TCrP), 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP), and tri­(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) but in different fractions. A bimodal distribution was observed for TDCPP, TPhP, and tributoxyethyl phosphate (TBEP). The results of mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) indicated that TDCPP, TCrP, and TEHP were mainly located on ultrafine particles (≤1 μm), while TnPP, TBEP, and EHDPP mainly on fine particles (≤2.5 μm). Furthermore, MMADs of OPFRs were found to be positively correlated with their vapor pressures (Vp) (<i>p</i> < 0.01), indicating that OPFR analogs with low Vp were inclined to adsorb on small size particles. Preliminary exposure assessments suggested a low risk of exposure to OPFRs for people working in such offices, and inhaled OPFRs would mainly deposit in the head region of the respiratory tract

    Preparation of Gelatin-Quaternary Ammonium Salt Coating on Titanium Surface for Antibacterial/Osteogenic Properties

    Titanium (Ti) and its alloys are widely used in medical treatment, engineering, and other fields because of their excellent properties including biological activity, an elastic modulus similar to that of human bones, and corrosion resistance. However, there are still many defects in the surface properties of Ti in practical applications. For example, the biocompatibility of Ti with bone tissue can be greatly reduced in implants due to a lack of osseointegration as well as antibacterial properties, which may lead to osseointegration failure. To address these problems and to take advantage of the amphoteric polyelectrolyte properties of gelatin, a thin layer of gelatin was prepared by electrostatic self-assembly technology. Diepoxide quaternary ammonium salt (DEQAS) and maleopimaric acid quaternary ammonium salt (MPA−N+) were then synthesized and grafted onto the thin layer. The cell adhesion and migration experiments demonstrated that the coating has excellent biocompatibility, and those grafted with MPA−N+ promoted cell migration. The bacteriostatic experiment showed that the mixed grafting with two ammonium salts had excellent bacteriostatic performance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with bacteriostasis rates of 98.1 ± 1.0% and 99.2 ± 0.5%, respectively

    A Review on Gold Nanotriangles: Synthesis, Self-Assembly and Their Applications

    Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with interesting optical properties have attracted much attention in recent years. The synthesis and plasmonic properties of AuNPs with a controllable size and shape have been extensively investigated. Among these AuNPs, gold nanotriangles (AuNTs) exhibited unique optical and plasmonic properties due to their special triangular anisotropy. Indeed, AuNTs showed promising applications in optoelectronics, optical sensing, imaging and other fields. However, only few reviews about these applications have been reported. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the synthesis and self-assembly of AuNTs and their applications in recent years. The preparation protocols of AuNTs are mainly categorized into chemical synthesis, biosynthesis and physical-stimulus-induced synthesis. The comparison between the advantages and disadvantages of various synthetic strategies are discussed. Furthermore, the specific surface modification of AuNTs and their self-assembly into different dimensional nano- or microstructures by various interparticle interactions are introduced. Based on the unique physical properties of AuNTs and their assemblies, the applications towards chemical biology and sensing were developed. Finally, the future development of AuNTs is prospected

    Prospecting Potential of the Yanjingou Gold Deposit in the East Kunlun Orogen, NW China: Evidence from Primary Halo Geochemistry and In Situ Pyrite Thermoelectricity

    The Wulonggou Au district in the East Kunlun Orogen is one of the most important Au producing regions in China. The Yanjingou Au deposit occurs within a shear zone in the northeastern Wulonggou Au district. Based on detailed field investigations, geochemical data for the primary halo, and in situ thermoelectric data for pyrite, the following key results were obtained: (1) the Yanjingou Au deposit has the fractured-altered-rock type gold mineralization that is arsenopyrite-rich; (2) elemental correlations and cluster analysis show that Au and As are the most diagnostic elements; (3) geochemical data for the primary halo indicate the deposit is a shallow supra-ore halo ore body; and (4) in situ pyrite thermoelectric data show that the proportion of P-type pyrite is &gt;80% and the detachment rate is 50%, which can be inferred that the location of the ore body is shallow. Based on our data, we present a mineralization prediction model for the ore body. The Yanjingou Au deposit has a good mineralization and high prospecting potential, with at least half of the ore body being concealed at depth, which has important scientific guiding significance for the breakthrough of prospecting and exploration

    Group B streptococcal colonization in mothers and infants in western China: prevalences and risk factors

    Abstract Background The epidemiology of maternal and infant Group B streptococcus (GBS) colonization is poorly understood in China. The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence and risk factors associated with maternal and infant GBS colonization in Western China. Methods From January 2017 to June 2017, a prospective study was conducted to estimate the maternal and infant GBS colonization rate by maternal rectovaginal and infant nasopharynx, ear canal and umbilical swab culture. Patient demographics, clinical characteristics and outcomes were collected. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were used to examine the risk factors associated with GBS colonization of mothers and infants. Results The GBS colonization rate in mothers and infants was 6.1 and 0.7%, respectively. The vertical transmission rate was 7.6%. The early onset GBS infection rate was 0.58 per 1000 live births and mortality was 0.29 per 1000 live births. Age younger than 40 years (p = 0.040) and minority ethnic status (p = 0.049) were associated with higher GBS colonization rate in pregnant women. Positive GBS status in the mother prior to delivery (p < 0.001) as well as longer duration of membrane rupture (≥12 h) (p < 0.001) and longer labor (≥4 h) (p < 0.001) were all significant risk factors for GBS colonization in infants. Compared to infants without GBS colonization, infants colonized with GBS were more likely to have had a temperature of ≥38 °C (p < 0.001), developed early onset infection (EOD) (p < 0.001), and been prescribed antibiotics (p < 0.001). Furthermore, infants with GBS were more likely to have been admitted to neonatal intensive unit (NICU) (p < 0.001) with a longer hospital length of stay (LOS) (p < 0.001). Conclusions Maternal GBS colonization, longer duration of membrane rupture and labor were all major risk factors associated with GBS colonization in Chinese infants.
