    Irrigation and drainage in the new millennium

    Presented at the 2000 USCID international conference, Challenges facing irrigation and drainage in the new millennium on June 20-24 in Fort Collins, Colorado.Includes bibliographical references.Climate potential in respect to onset, magnitude and risk associated with rainfall for crop production in the Nilwala basin, Southern Sri Lanka was assessed using the daily rainfall of 12 stations scattered in different locations for more than 35 consecutive years (1950-1995). The program CROPWAT was used to assess the irrigation need. It was revealed that rainfall of the basin increases from south to north with increasing elevation and altitude. Within a 70-km distance in the south north gradient, rainfall elevates from 1656 mm at Kekanadura to 4216 mm at Kudawa. The net irrigation requirement of Yala rice in different locations varied from 1012 mm to 1246 mm. It was established that the irrigation need in the Nilwala upper catchment is below 40 % of the total water requirement, but in downstream areas it constitutes above 70% of the total water demand. Therefore both the Yala and Maha seasons in Nilwala downstream areas appeared to be unsuitable for rice cultivation without supplementary irrigation. From April 10th onward until May 20th is the best period for establishment of perennial crops at upper catchment areas. Optimum dates for crop establishment at the mid and lower part of the catchment falls on the 14th meteorological week. It is important to note that delaying crop establishment in Yala by 2 or 3 weeks from the optimum date would result in a considerable increase of irrigation need even in the upper catchment areas; it is not advisable to delay the establishment of Maha rice until October when rice varieties off our month duration are cultivated

    Reflection of university extra-curricular activities of a candidate in employee selection: a descriptive study of HRM related jobs

    The main purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a significant value given to the graduates who have engaged in university extracurricular activities in the selection process for a Human Resource Management related job. Further, the current study was designed to identify the industry perception about graduates those who have engaged in extracurricular activities, and who did not. This is a cross sectional descriptive research in nature. A standard questionnaire was used to collect the primary data through a survey. The respondents were the professionals who are directly engaging in the selection process selected from 40 private sector organizations in Sri Lanka. Descriptive statistics, paired sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data and make conclusions. Findings revealed that the private sector organizations significantly believe that graduates who have engaged in university extracurricular activities might have developed more skills, good personal qualities and other relevant employability behaviors than graduates those who haven't engaged. Thought the belief was that, further, it was identified the engagement in extracurricular activities is not a significant reason to get selected for a HR related job in the industry. It was found that the perception regarding undergraduates who have not engaged in extracurricular activities is not varying from industry to industry. But, findings revealed that the perception, and the given due recognition for undergraduates who have engaged in extracurricular activities is industry specific.</span

    ASSESSMENT OF THE COMPOSITION AND THE VOLUME OF BIOGAS LIBERATION FROM AGRICULTURAL WASTES

    Study was conducted in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ruhuna, Mapalana toassess the composition and the volume of biogas liberation pattern from differentagricultural raw materials.In the Sri Lankan batch type biogas generator (volume 6m\ first batch of straw (lOOOkg)was filled in September 1999 and second and third batch in October 2000, April 2001respectively. It was revealed that average gas production from the digester was 1.0 m3/daywith a peak value of 1.8m3/day. Total gas production during four and half month period ofdigestion was 166.85 m3. The maximum average methane percentage and the average lagphase during the digestion were 50% and 20 days respectively.In order to assess the biogas liberation pattern and composiuon of each material, alaboratory test unit was designed using a 20 L plastic gallon as the digester andexperiment was conducted using straw, cow dung and market garbage (vegetable) as rawmaterials. Gas volumes, pH value of slurry and methane percentage were measured whilemaintaining the temperature between 35Ā°C-37Ā°C using electric bulbs.N,P,K compositions, CIN ratio and dry matter percentages of different raw materials wereanalyzed. Total biogas liberated per unit weight of dry matter was 8.15 L, 58.7 Land15.797L for dung, vegetable and straw respectively. The duration of digestion period was55-60 days. Average methane percentages of the liberated gases were 53%, 54% and 50%for dung, vegetable and straw respectively. It was revealed that market garbage had thehighest digestibility value, which had the highest gas production with high methanepercentage.

    Walking on Waterā€”A Natural Experiment of a Population Health Intervention to Promote Physical Activity after the Winter Holidays

    Background: Very few experimental studies exist describing the effect of changes to the built environment and opportunities for physical activity (PA). We examined the impact of an urban trail created on a frozen waterway on visitor counts and PA levels. Methods: We studied a natural experiment in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that included 374,204 and 237,362 trail users during the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 winter seasons. The intervention was a 10 km frozen waterway trail lasting 8ā€“10 weeks. The comparator conditions were the time periods immediately before and after the intervention when ~10 kms of land-based trails were accessible to the public. A convenience sample of 466 participants provided directly measured PA while on the frozen waterway. Results: Most trail users were 35 years or older (73%), Caucasian (77%), and had an annual household income >$50,000 (61%). Mean daily trail network visits increased ~four-fold when the frozen waterway was open (median and interquartile range (IQR) = 710 (239ā€“1839) vs. 2897 (1360ā€“5583) visits/day, p < 0.001), compared with when it was closed. Users achieved medians of 3852 steps (IQR: 2574ā€“5496 steps) and 23 min (IQR: 13ā€“37 min) of moderate to vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) per visit, while 37% of users achieved ā‰„30 min of MVPA. Conclusion: A winter-specific urban trail network on a frozen waterway substantially increased visits to an existing urban trail network and was associated with a meaningful dose of MVPA. Walking on water could nudge populations living in cold climates towards more activity during winter months

    Guinea grass (Panicum maximum) dominated grasslands, a major habitat typein the Udawalawa National Park, is frequently occupied by wild elephants.Behaviour of juvenile elephants (4-6 years old) inhabiting the habitat wasstudied from April 2004 to March 2005. Focal animal sampling was employedto quantify behaviour and total time of observation was 3100 minutes.The activity budget of the juveniles comprised of ten behaviour patterns;feeding (44%), resting (24%), locomotion (19%), play (5%), comfort (5%),drinking, social, exploratory, agonistic and anxious. Maximum feeding (55%)and minimum resting (13%) were recorded during late afternoons (1500-1800hrs) whilst maximum resting (37%) and minimum feeding (29%) wererecorded during late mornings (0900-1200 hrs). Locomotion and otherbehaviour patterns did not significantly vary with time. Time spent on feedingwas higher in wet months (47%) than in dry months (39%). Resting wasrelatively higher in dry period (27%) than in wet (21 %). P. maximum was themajor food type consumed throughout the year while they fed on native grassesand herbs to a lesser extent (21-29%). Significant correlations between ambienttemperature and time spent on feeding (r= -0.716) and resting (r = +0.751)were evident.The Department of Wildlife Conservation and the Born Free Foundation, UKare acknowledged.

    Hydrogeological condition and groundwater quality distribution in the tsunami affected Southern coastal area of Sri Lanka

    Groundwater monitoring in the tsunami affected southern coastal Weligama bay area was conductedduring May 2005 to July 2006 to determine the hydrogeological conditions and groundwater quality byselecting 90 dug wells where water level, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS)and pH was measured in monthly interval. The Weligama bay area is located in latitudes and longitudesof 80Ā°22', 5Ā°97'. The dug wells are sunk into the permeable quaternary sand deposits in the coastalmargin at Weligama Bay area is very permeable and-hydro-geological conditions are very favorablefor saltwater intrusion.The study helped to prepare groundwater isograph map and the distribution ofEC, TDS and pH mapsusing the GIS package MAPINFO. Groundwater isograph map help to identify groundwater distributionof the coastal area of Weligama. There exist a closed relationship between topographical map &amp;groundwater contour map.The results of the study revealed that the Electrical conductivity of well water in all wells situated inthe Tsunami affected Zone are turned to be saline (EC in average increases from 150011 Siemens perem to around 4000 ~l siemens /cm.). According to the hydrographs prepared during the study period,unconfined quaternary aquifer ground water level intimately related to atmospheric precipitation. Thecharacteristic of the hydrograph provides a conclusion, that the recharge of unconfined ground waterin quaternary aquifer takes place during the period of monsoon rain and quality of ground water dueto tsunami has not changed specially.

    Towards Digital Thinking and Practices: Experiences of Sri Lankan Teachers and Students

    Commonwealth Digital Education Leadership Training in Action (C-DELTA), an open and free online programme of the Commonwealth of Learning, provides a framework to foster digital education. The Open University of Sri Lanka implemented an intervention during 2020-2021 to promote digital education in Sri Lankan secondary schools, through the adoption of C-DELTA. This paper presents how C-DELTA supported developing digital thinking and practices among teachers and students, challenges faced and supports received by them, and impacts of the intervention. Participantsā€™ experiences were captured through questionnaire surveys, concept maps, focus group interviews, reflective stories, and video narratives. The findings revealed that the intervention has enhanced developing digital learning skills of teachers and students, and changing their thinking and practices, yet, amid various challenges. While the implementation of C-DELTA in schools has been slow during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pandemic itself has shown the significance of improving digital literacy and digital practices

    A community-based cluster randomised trial of safe storage to reduce pesticide self-poisoning in rural Sri Lanka: study protocol

    BACKGROUND: The WHO recognises pesticide poisoning to be the single most important means of suicide globally. Pesticide self-poisoning is a major public health and clinical problem in rural Asia, where it has led to case fatality ratios 20-30 times higher than self-poisoning in the developed world. One approach to reducing access to pesticides is for households to store pesticides in lockable "safe-storage" containers. However, before this approach can be promoted, evidence is required on its effectiveness and safety. METHODS/DESIGN: A community-based cluster randomised controlled trial has been set up in 44,000 households in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka. A census is being performed, collecting baseline demographic data, socio-economic status, pesticide usage, self-harm and alcohol. Participating villages are then randomised and eligible households in the intervention arm given a lockable safe storage container for agrochemicals. The primary outcome will be incidence of pesticide self-poisoning over three years amongst individuals aged 14 years and over. 217,944 person years of follow-up are required in each arm to detect a 33% reduction in pesticide self-poisoning with 80% power at the 5% significance level. Secondary outcomes will include the incidence of all pesticide poisoning and total self-harm. DISCUSSION: This paper describes a large effectiveness study of a community intervention to reduce the burden of intentional poisoning in rural Sri Lanka. The study builds on a strong partnership between provincial health services, local and international researchers, and local communities. We discuss issues in relation to randomisation and contamination, engaging control villages, the intervention, and strategies to improve adherence

    Electro-plating and characterisation of cadmium sulphide thin films using ammonium thiosulphate as the sulphur source

    Cadmium sulphide (CdS) thin films have been successfully prepared from an aqueous electrolyte bath containing CdCl2 and ammonium thiosulphate ((NH4)2S2O3) using electrodeposition technique. The structural, compositional, optical, morphological and electrical properties of these thin films have been characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, UVā€“Vis spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoelectrochemical cell and D.C. currentā€“voltage (Iā€“V) measurements. The optimum deposition cathodic potential has been observed at 1,455 mV, in a 2-electrode system with respect to carbon anode. Structural analysis using XRD shows a mixture of hexagonal and cubic phases in the as-deposited CdS samples and a phase transformation to the hexagonal structure occurred after heat treatment at 400 Ā°C for 20 min. Optical studies demonstrate an improvement in the band edge, producing 2.42 eV for the band gap of the films after heat treatment. The heat treated CdS thin films show better transmission for wavelengths longer than 500 nm. SEM and AFM show that the heat-treated samples are more uniform, smoother and have larger grain size. Electrical studies confirm that the CdS thin films have n-type electrical conductivity and heat treated CdS thin films have resistivities of the order of 105 Ī© cm
