Solid state crystal physics at very low temperatures
The properties of nearly perfect crystals was studied at cryogenic temperatures. A large Helium 3 and Helium 4 dilution refrigerator has been assembled, and is described. A cryostat suitable for cooling a 35 liter volume to .020 Kelvin was designed and constructed, together with instrumentation to observe the properties of nearly perfect crystals
Properties of large nearly perfect crystals at very low temperatures
A liquid helium cryostat of a size and construction unavailable commercially, was built for use in measuring the Q of several materials at milli-Kelvin temperatures. The design and testing of the cryostat is described as well as the design of the experiment vacuum chamber and adaptor for the dilution refrigerator insert. Theory, design, and testing are also discussed for the magnetic coils built to levitate the materials so as to isolate them and increase the measured Q. A four point suspension with capacitor end plates as the transducer was used to obtain preliminary Q measurements of 6061 aluminum alloy and single crystal silicon. Results are tabulated

Analysis of ram-jet engine performance including effects of component changes
Calculated design-point performance of ram-jet engines using JP-4 fuel is presented for a wide range of engine total-temperature ratios and combustion-chamber-inlet Mach numbers for flight numbers from 1.5 to 4.0. The results include engine thrust, drag, fuel consumption, and area ratios. Data are also presented to illustrate the sensitivity of the results to variations in the assumed component parameters. A brief comparison is included between fixed-and variable-geometry engines

An analysis of air-turborocket engine performance including effects of component changes
An analytical study of the air-turborocket engine is presented, showing both full-power operation over a range of flight speeds and part-power operation at several supersonic speeds. Engine weight, drag, and area variations are calculated in addition to the internal thrust coefficient and specific impulse. Tehe effects of changes in the component designs and efficiencies are indicated. Maximum specific impulse (including nacelle drag and using gasoline - nitric acid propellants) at Mach 2.3 is 1500 lb/(lb/sec). The performance is compared with that of a typical turbojet engine
