Solid state crystal physics at very low temperatures
The properties of nearly perfect crystals was studied at cryogenic temperatures. A large Helium 3 and Helium 4 dilution refrigerator has been assembled, and is described. A cryostat suitable for cooling a 35 liter volume to .020 Kelvin was designed and constructed, together with instrumentation to observe the properties of nearly perfect crystals
Lunar Surface Gravimeter Experiment
The lunar surface gravimeter which was emplaced on the moon by the Apollo 17 flight is described and a schematic diagram of the sensor is provided. The objective of the lunar surface gravimeter is to use the moon as an instrumented antenna to detect gravitational waves. Another objective is to measure tidal deformation of the moon. Samples of signals received during lunar sunrise activity and during quiet periods are presented in graph form based on power spectrum analysi
Properties of large nearly perfect crystals at very low temperatures
A liquid helium cryostat of a size and construction unavailable commercially, was built for use in measuring the Q of several materials at milli-Kelvin temperatures. The design and testing of the cryostat is described as well as the design of the experiment vacuum chamber and adaptor for the dilution refrigerator insert. Theory, design, and testing are also discussed for the magnetic coils built to levitate the materials so as to isolate them and increase the measured Q. A four point suspension with capacitor end plates as the transducer was used to obtain preliminary Q measurements of 6061 aluminum alloy and single crystal silicon. Results are tabulated
On the Non-Existence of Multiplicative Equilibrium Bidding Strategies
Extensive use has been made of multiplicative bidding strategies in the literature relating to auctions of mineral leases. It is shown that, generally, multiplicative strategies are not in equilibrium. It is also established that an equilibrium bidding strategy is not a function merely of a suļ¬icient statistic for the true value, or of any other of a class of related statistics, if an individual bidder observes more than one piece of information. The general insuļ¬iciency of a single simple statistic is briefly discussed and a special class of models is identiļ¬ed in which a single statistic is indeed strategically suļ¬icient
Competitive Bidding and Proprietary Information
The auction of an object is considered, for the case in which one bidder is better-informed than the others concerning the actual value of the object. An equilibrium point solution of the competitive bidding game is determined; at this equilibrium, the expected revenue of the less-well-informed bidders is zero. The case of an object which can take only values from a discrete set is dealt with as the limit of auctions of continuously-valued objects
Containerless high temperature property measurements
Containerless processing in the low gravity environment of space provides the opportunity to increase the temperature at which well controlled processing of and property measurements on materials is possible. This project was directed towards advancing containerless processing and property measurement techniques for application to materials research at high temperatures in space. Containerless high temperature material property studies include measurements of the vapor pressure, melting temperature, optical properties, and spectral emissivities of solid boron. The reaction of boron with nitrogen was also studied by laser polarimetric measurement of boron nitride film growth. The optical properties and spectral emissivities were measured for solid and liquid silicon, niobium, and zirconium; liquid aluminum and titanium; and liquid Ti-Al alloys of 5 to 60 atomic pct. titanium. Alternative means for noncontact temperature measurement in the absence of material emissivity data were evaluated. Also, the application of laser induced fluorescence for component activity measurements in electromagnetic levitated liquids was studied, along with the feasibility of a hybrid aerodynamic electromagnetic levitation technique
Containerless processing of amorphous ceramics
The absence of gravity allows containerless processing of materials which could not otherwise be processed. High melting point, hard materials such as borides, nitrides, and refractory metals are usually brittle in their crystalline form. The absence of dislocations in amorphous materials frequently endows them with flexibility and toughness. Systematic studies of the properties of many amorphous materials have not been carried out. The requirements for their production is that they can be processed in a controlled way without container interaction. Containerless processing in microgravity could permit the control necessary to produce amorphous forms of hard materials
