OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of 10 mg and 25 mg once daily Empagliflozin on liver enzymes of patients of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODOLOGY The study design was Quasi Experimental. Thirty three adult patients of  Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who were already on 2000 mg of Metformin and 100 mg of Sitagliptin and were having suboptimal glycemic control (HBA1C > 7% <12%), had elevated Alanine Transaminase (ALT) levels and had ultrasonographic features consistent with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were divided into three groups, one group receiving 10 mg Empagliglozin as add-on treatment (Group A), the second group receiving 25 mg of Empagliflozin (Group B) as an additional treatment, and the third group continued with previous medications without any additional treatment (Group C). HbA1C levels and ALT levels of all the three groups were taken at baseline and at 12 weeks. RESULTS Total patients and their mean ages in group A, B and C were 10, 12 and 11 and 52.40 ±4.24 years, 52.42 ± 5.27 years and 52.34 ± 4.37 years, respectively. There was a statistically significant (p > 0.05) decrease mean ALT levels in Group A pre-treatment and 12 weeks post-treatment. Similarly, there was a statistically significant (p > 0.05) decrease mean ALT levels in Group B pre-treatment and 12 weeks post-treatment.CONCLUSION Empagliflozin in both 10mg and 25 mg once daily doses cause statistically significant reduction in ALT levels in patients with NASH associated with T2D

HistoSeg : Quick attention with multi-loss function for multi-structure segmentation in digital histology images

Medical image segmentation assists in computer-aided diagnosis, surgeries, and treatment. Digitize tissue slide images are used to analyze and segment glands, nuclei, and other biomarkers which are further used in computer-aided medical applications. To this end, many researchers developed different neural networks to perform segmentation on histological images, mostly these networks are based on encoder-decoder architecture and also utilize complex attention modules or transformers. However, these networks are less accurate to capture relevant local and global features with accurate boundary detection at multiple scales, therefore, we proposed an Encoder-Decoder Network, Quick Attention Module and a Multi Loss Function (combination of Binary Cross Entropy (BCE) Loss, Focal Loss & Dice Loss). We evaluate the generalization capability of our proposed network on two publicly available datasets for medical image segmentation MoNuSeg and GlaS and outperform the state-of-the-art networks with 1.99% improvement on the MoNuSeg dataset and 7.15% improvement on the GlaS dataset. Dependence of temperatures and kinetic freeze-out volume on centrality in Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions at high energy

Centrality-dependent double-differential transverse momentum spectra of negatively charged particles (π\pi^-, KK^- and pˉ\bar p) at mid-(pseudo)rapidity interval in nuclear collisions are analyzed by the standard distribution in terms of multi-component. The experimental data measured in gold-gold (Au-Au) collisions by the PHENIX Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are studied. The effective temperature, initial temperature, kinetic freeze-out temperature, transverse flow velocity and kinetic freeze-out volume are extracted from the fitting to transverse momentum spectra. We observed, that the mentioned five quantities increase with the increase of event centrality due to the fact that the average transverse momentum increases with the increase of event centrality. This renders that larger momentum (energy) transfer and further multiple-scattering had happened in central centrality.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Advances in High Energy Physics, accepte

Prioritizing family planning for achieving provincial maternal child health and development goals

    Get PDF
This report presents an argument for prioritizing family planning to achieve the maternal, child, and development goals of four major provinces in Pakistan, using the latest available provincial data, especially the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey 2012-13. The analysis is based on provincial projections generated by the Population Council. Opportunities for enhancing family planning are identified, and the number of maternal, infant, and child lives that could be saved in each province through an accelerated family planning program is estimated. The analysis establishes that none of the provinces are on track to meet Millennium Development Goals 4 or 5. The report’s key message across all provinces relates to the need for an accelerated family planning program. The health sector in general, and health departments in particular, will have to step up the delivery of family planning services at their outlets and hospitals, and provide referrals and outreach in conjunction with population welfare departments. The report also recommends revitalizing the Lady Health Workers Program in each province, and providing services to areas not covered by the population welfare and health departments or by Lady Health Workers

    Get PDF
Digital health offers lung cancer patients to improve their health status while allowing patients, providers, and administrators to coordinate data and care at individual and community levels. While technology improvements provide lung cancer patients and healthcare providers with a valuable new tool for disease management, these are yet to be widely accepted. In particular, we aim to: (1) develop a Machine Learning (ML)-based framework for data collection from active online lung cancer forums and other parameters for patients, providers and their organizations, (2) build an AI-based model to develop a cancer ontology for exploring different factors and patients’ emotions associated to lung cancer management, (3) Design a mHealth app to set up a support system in terms of providing patients with information and social support, and ML models-based treatment recommendation system. The IT-based support system will provide the best and most specific treatment plan and recommendation system for lung cancer management

Have you been a victim of COVID-19-related cyber incidents? Survey, taxonomy, and mitigation strategies

    Get PDF
Cybercriminals are constantly on the lookout for new attack vectors, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. For example, social distancing measures have resulted in travel bans, lockdowns, and stay-at-home orders, consequently increasing the reliance on information and communications technologies, such as Zoom. Cybercriminals have also attempted to exploit the pandemic to facilitate a broad range of malicious activities, such as attempting to take over videoconferencing platforms used in online meetings/educational activities, information theft, and other fraudulent activities. This study briefly reviews some of the malicious cyber activities associated with COVID-19 and the potential mitigation solutions. We also propose an attack taxonomy, which (optimistically) will help guide future risk management and mitigation responses. © 2013 IEEE
