Beyond the sentence: Shared reading within a high secure hospital
Ashworth Hospital provides care for inpatients detained under the Mental Health Acts who present a danger to themselves or others. Rehabilitative interventions can help support the best outcomes for patients, their families, care providers, and society. The efficacy of weekly Shared Reading sessions for four patients with experience of psychosis and a history of self-harm was investigated using a 12-month longitudinal case series design. Session data were subjected to psychological discourse analysis to identify discursive strategies employed to accomplish social action and change over the duration of the intervention. Archetypes of interactional achievement across sessions emerged. Broadening of capacity to consider was demonstrated through increased hedging and less declarative language. Increased assertiveness was achieved through reduced generalisation marked by a transition from second-person plural pronouns to more first-person singular pronouns. Avoidance of expression and disagreement strategies diminished over time. In addition, heightened engagement was accomplished through the increased tendency to employ functionally related and preferred responses within adjacency pairs, which mirrored non-verbal communicative strategies. Shared Reading shows promise for promoting the interactional accomplishment for individuals within high secure settings, who are ready to undertake a recovery-related activity. Pathways of interaction should continue to be explored, with consideration to the current study’s strengths and limitations. This study contributes to the understanding of efficacious reading study design and the interactional outcomes of therapeutic reading
Flows on scales of 150 Mpc?
We investigate the reality of large-scale streaming on scales of up to 150
Mpc using the peculiar motions of galaxies in three directions. New R-band CCD
photometry and spectroscopy for elliptical galaxies is used. The Fundamental
Plane distance indicator is calibrated using the Coma cluster and an
inhomogeneous Malmquist bias correction is applied. A linear bulk-flow model is
fitted to the peculiar velocities in the sample regions and the results do not
reflect the bulk flow observed by Lauer and Postman (LP). Accounting for the
difference in geometry between the galaxy distribution in the three regions and
the LP clustersconfirms the disagreement; assuming a low-density CDM power
spectrum, we find that the observed bulk flow of the galaxies in our sample
excludes the LP bulk flow at the 99.8% confidence level.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur
Content & Watkins's account of natural axiomatizations
This paper briefly recounts the importance of the notion of natural axiomatizations for explicating hypothetico-deductivism, empirical significance, theoretical reduction, and organic fertility. Problems for the account of natural axiomatizations developed by John Watkins in Science and Scepticism and the revised account developed by Elie Zahar are demonstrated. It is then shown that Watkins's account can be salvaged from various counter-examples in a principled way by adding the demand that every axiom of a natural axiomatization should be part of the content of the theory being axiomatized. The crucial point here is that content cannot simply be identified with the set of logical consequences of a theory, but must be restricted to a proper subset of the consequence set. It is concluded that the revised Watkins account has certain advantages over the account of natural axiomatizations offered in Gemes (1993)

Dosimetric comparison study between intensity modulated radiation therapy and three-dimensional conformal proton therapy for pelvic bone marrow sparing in the treatment of cervical cancer.
The objective was to compare intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with 3D conformal proton therapy (3DCPT) in the treatment of cervical cancer. In particular, each technique's ability to spare pelvic bone marrow (PBM) was of primary interest in this study. A total of six cervical cancer patients (3 postoperative and 3 intact) were planned and analyzed. All plans had uniform 1.0 cm CTV-PTV margin and satisfied the 95% PTV with 100% isodose (prescription dose = 45 Gy) coverage. Dose-volume histograms (DVH) were analyzed for comparison. The overall PTV and PBM volumes were 1035.9 ± 192.2 cc and 1151.4 ± 198.3 cc, respectively. In terms of PTV dose conformity index (DCI) and dose homogeneity index (DHI), 3DCPT was slightly superior to IMRT with 1.00 ± 0.001, 1.01 ± 0.02, and 1.10 ± 0.02, 1.13 ± 0.01, respectively. In addition, 3DCPT demonstrated superiority in reducing lower doses (i.e., V30 or less) to PBM, small bowel and bladder. Particularly in PBM, average V10 and V20 reductions of 10.8% and 7.4% (p = 0.001 and 0.04), respectively, were observed. However, in the higher dose range, IMRT provided better sparing (> V30). For example, in small bowel and PBM, average reductions in V45 of 4.9% and 10.0% (p = 0.048 and 0.008), respectively, were observed. Due to its physical characteristics such as low entrance dose, spread-out Bragg peak and finite particle range of protons, 3DCPT illustrated superior target coverage uniformity and sparing of the lower doses in PBM and other organs. Further studies are, however, needed to fully exploit the benefits of protons for general use in cervical cancer
Stellar Encounters with Massive Star-Disk Systems
The dense, clustered environment in which massive stars form can lead to
interactions with neighboring stars. It has been hypothesized that collisions
and mergers may contribute to the growth of the most massive stars. In this
paper we extend the study of star-disk interactions to explore encounters
between a massive protostar and a less massive cluster sibling using the
publicly available SPH code GADGET-2. Collisions do not occur in the parameter
space studied, but the end state of many encounters is an eccentric binary with
a semi-major axis ~ 100 AU. Disk material is sometimes captured by the
impactor. Most encounters result in disruption and destruction of the initial
disk, and periodic torquing of the remnant disk. We consider the effect of the
changing orientation of the disk on an accretion driven jet, and the evolution
of the systems in the presence of on-going accretion from the parent core.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted to Ap
Magnetic order in the = 1/2 triangular-lattice compound NdCdP
We present and characterize a new member of the CdP (= rare
earth) family of materials, NdCdP, which possesses Nd cations
arranged on well-separated triangular lattice layers. Magnetic susceptibility
and heat capacity measurements demonstrate a likely = 1/2
ground state, and also reveal the formation of long-range antiferromagnetic
order at K. Via measurements of magnetization, heat capacity,
and electrical resistivity, we characterize the electronic properties of
NdCdP and compare results to density functional theory calculations.Comment: Accepted for publication at Physical Review Material
Determination of the Cosmic Distance Scale from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect and Chandra X-ray Measurements of High Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We determine the distance to 38 clusters of galaxies in the redshift range
0.14 < z < 0.89 using X-ray data from Chandra and Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect data
from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland
Association interferometric arrays. The cluster plasma and dark matter
distributions are analyzed using a hydrostatic equilibrium model that accounts
for radial variations in density, temperature and abundance, and the
statistical and systematic errors of this method are quantified. The analysis
is performed via a Markov chain Monte Carlo technique that provides
simultaneous estimation of all model parameters. We measure a Hubble constant
of 76.9 +3.9-3.4 +10.0-8.0 km/s/Mpc (statistical followed by systematic
uncertainty at 68% confidence) for an Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7 cosmology.
We also analyze the data using an isothermal beta model that does not invoke
the hydrostatic equilibrium assumption, and find H_0=73.7 +4.6-3.8 +9.5-7.6
km/s/Mpc; to avoid effects from cool cores in clusters, we repeated this
analysis excluding the central 100 kpc from the X-ray data, and find H_0=77.6
+4.8-4.3 +10.1-8.2 km/s/Mpc. The consistency between the models illustrates the
relative insensitivity of SZE/X-ray determinations of H_0 to the details of the
cluster model. Our determination of the Hubble parameter in the distant
universe agrees with the recent measurement from the Hubble Space Telescope key
