    Detonating Cord for Flux Compression Generation using Electrical Detonator No. 33

    The paper highlights the use of electrical detonators for magnetic flux compression generator applications which requires synchronisation of two events with precise time delay of tens of ms and jitter within a few ms. These requirements are generally achieved by exploding bridge wire type detonators which are difficult to develop and are not commercially available. A technique has been developed using commercially available electrical detonator no. 33 to synchronise between peak of seed current in stator coil and detonation of explosive charge in armature. In present experiments, electrical signal generated by self-shorting pin due to bursting of electrical detonator has been used to trigger the capacitor discharge and the detonating cord of known length has been used to incorporate predetermined delay to synchronise the events. It has been demonstrated that using electrical detonator and known length of detonating cord, the two events can be synchronised with predetermined delay between 31 and 251 ms with variation of ± 0.5ms.     Synthesis of Thiolated Alginate and Evaluation of Mucoadhesiveness, Cytotoxicity and Release Retardant Properties

    Modification of polymers by covalent attachment of thiol bearing pendant groups is reported to impart many beneficial properties to them. Hence in the present study, sodium alginate–cysteine conjugate was synthesized by carbodiimide mediated coupling under varying reaction conditions and the derivatives characterized for thiol content. The thiolated alginate species synthesized had bound thiol content ranging from 247.8±11.03–324.54±10.107 ΅mol/g of polymer depending on the reaction conditions. Matrix tablets based on sodium alginate-cysteine conjugate and native sodium alginate containing tramadol hydrochloride as a model drug were prepared and mucoadhesive strength and in vitro drug release from the tablets were compared. Tablets containing 75 mg sodium alginate-cysteine conjugate could sustain release of 10 mg of model drug for 3 h, whereas 90% of the drug was released within 1 h from corresponding tablets prepared using native sodium alginate. An approximately 2-fold increase in the minimal detachment force of the tablets from an artificial mucin film was observed for sodium alginate–cysteine conjugate as compared to native sodium alginate. In vitro cytotoxicity studies in L-929 mouse fibroblast cells studied using an MTT assay revealed that at low concentrations of polymer, sodium alginate–cysteine conjugate was less toxic to L-929 mouse fibroblast cell line when compared to native sodium alginate. Hence, thiolation is found to be a simple route to improving polymer performance. The combination of improved controlled drug release and mucoadhesive properties coupled with the low toxicity of these new excipients builds up immense scope for the use of thiolated polymers in mucoadhesive drug delivery systems

    Nanoparticles influence seed germination traits and seed pathogen infection rate in forage sorghum (<em>Sorghum bicolour</em>) and cowpea (<em>Vigna unguiculata</em>)

    363-372Nanoparticles (NPs) influence germination and growth of plants and also reported to have antimicrobial effect on seed. In the present study, effect of four metal/metal oxide NPs viz. Zinc oxide (ZnO), Titanium oxide (TiO2), Copper oxide (CuO) and Silver (Ag) on seed germination traits and seed pathogenicity of forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolour (L.)] and cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.)] was assessed. NPs were synthesized before seed treatment and characterized for size and chemical property by particle size analyzer (PSA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) following standard procedure. All NPs were pure and confirmed as under nano-size (>90% of particles below 100 nm). Seed surfaces were observed under SEM for natural openings that apparently acted as entry points for NPs. Seeds were treated with NPs at 0 mg (D0), 750 mg (D1), 1000 mg (D2) and 1250 mg/kg of seed (D3). Except TiO2, all other NPs enhanced germination at lower dose (D1), but germination was reduced at higher dose (D3) (p=0.05) as compared to control (D0). Seed vigour traits (germination, shoot length, root length and seedling dryweight in this experiment) were also influenced by NPs. Ag NP was proved to be strong antimicrobial agent in this study

    Not AvailableOut of 329 M ha geographical area of the country, potential human induced land degradation is reported to be as high as 187.7M ha (Paroda, 1998). At least 57.1 % of geographical area of the country suffers from different forms of land degradation and out of it, water erosion accounts for 65% land degradation. A large variety of soils spreading all over Indian sub continent are derived from a wide range of geographical rocks and parent material, interacting with soil forming features like climate, vegetation and topography for varying time period. The capacity of soil to produce is limited by intrinsic characteristics, agro-ecological setting and land and water management practices (Bhaskar et al., 2002). Proper identification, characterization and efficient land use management could increase the productivity of degraded lands (Bhaskar et al., 2004). Cotton is one of the most important cash (commercial and fibre) crop of the country, occupying an area of 8.5 M ha with an average yield of about 440 kg lint ha- 1, which is very low as compared to world average (650 kg lint ha-1).NAT

Scientific data like those procured from weather and seismic sensors can help in prediction and preparedness for disasters. On the other hand, availability of situational and infrastructural information in real time is essential for mitigation and relief work. This information is also crucial for post-analysis of disasters, and for designing better strategies and protocols for potential disasters in the future
