    Today, performance art is one of the most useful mediums for helping individuals see themselves differently. In this of Out of sight article, I explore the experience of participating in a student\u27s performance art project. This work was a performance of crossing the road. Here, I discuss the inclusion of overtly queer articulations of personal experience within the art classroom. How can performance art construct learning experiences that engage a dynamic process of self-critique? How are classrooms organized differently when students become actively involved in the development of the art curriculum? And, how might a performative investigation of the sociality of education be undertaken at sites of art education

    Employee Age as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Ambition and Work Role Affect

    Past research has demonstrated a negative relationship between ambition, or the desire to get ahead, and job satisfaction. In the present paper, age was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between ambition and job satisfaction such that the relationship between ambition and satisfaction is more negative for older employees than for younger employees. Three studies, with three criterion variables (promotion satisfaction, extrinsic job satisfaction, overall job satisfaction), were used to test the hypothesis. Results indicated support for the hypothesized interaction. The discussion focuses on the implications of the results for organizational and individual career management strategies

    Varieties of vacua in classical supersymmetric gauge theories

    We give a simple description of the classical moduli space of vacua for supersymmetric gauge theories with or without a superpotential. The key ingredient in our analysis is the observation that the lagrangian is invariant under the action of the complexified gauge group \Gc. From this point of view the usual DD-flatness conditions are an artifact of Wess--Zumino gauge. By using a gauge that preserves \Gc invariance we show that every constant matter field configuration that extremizes the superpotential is \Gc gauge-equivalent (in a sense that we make precise) to a unique classical vacuum. This result is used to prove that in the absence of a superpotential the classical moduli space is the algebraic variety described by the set of all holomorphic gauge-invariant polynomials. When a superpotential is present, we show that the classical moduli space is a variety defined by imposing additional relations on the holomorphic polynomials. Many of these points are already contained in the existing literature.     Human Books: Social Media, Unplugged

    Objectives Purpose: Enable health sciences students and staff to engage in dialogue to challenge common prejudices in a positive manner and to promote empathy for the patients and families they encounter. Methods Setting/Participants: Academic Health Sciences library serving students and staff in an urban hospital and university. The ‘reader’ participants included students, staff, and faculty from the academic medical center. The ‘book’ participants included volunteers from both inside and outside the institution. Results Brief Description: Adapting an international program, The Human Library, the library recruited ‘books’ who had experienced discrimination based on aspects of their lives such as race, sexual orientation, or disability. Two events were held, one in the spring, 2014 and one in the fall, 2014. During the day-long events ‘readers’ borrowed ‘books’ for 1:1 private half-hour conversations. All participants were invited to a concluding reception to discuss their experiences. Library staff monitored the event and gathered evaluations from books and readers. Conclusions Outcome: The spring event hosted 6 books with 20 readers and the fall event had 7 books with 25 readers. The response from all participants was overwhelmingly positive. The institution featured the event in a campus newsletter. Plans are underway for hosting an annual Human Library

    Changes in the redox state and endogenous fluorescence of in vivo human skin due to intrinsic and photo-aging, measured by multiphoton tomography with fluorescence lifetime imaging

    Ultraviolet radiation from solar exposure is a key extrinsic factor responsible for premature skin aging (i.e., photo-aging). Recent advances using in vivo multiphoton tomography (MPT) demonstrate the efficacy of this approach to assess intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging as an alternative to existing invasive techniques. In this study, we measured changes in epidermal autofluorescence, dermal collagen second harmonic generation (SHG), and the redox state of solar-exposed and solar-protected human skin by MPT with fluorescence lifetime imaging (MPT-FLIM). Twenty-four volunteers across four age categories (20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 to 59 years old; six volunteers each) were recruited for MPT-FLIM imaging of the dorsal (solar-exposed; photo-damaged) and volar (solar-protected) forearm. We demonstrate a higher intensity of dermal collagen SHG within the volar forearm compared to dorsal solar-exposed skin. Redox imaging of each epidermal skin stratum by FLIM demonstrates an increase in fluorescence lifetime in the solar-exposed dorsal forearm that is more apparent in aged skin. The results of this study suggest the redox state of the viable epidermis is a key marker in assessing intrinsic and photo-damage skin aging, in combination with changes in autofluorescence and SHG

    Automorphisms of the affine SU(3) fusion rules

    We classify the automorphisms of the (chiral) level-k affine SU(3) fusion rules, for any value of k, by looking for all permutations that commute with the modular matrices S and T. This can be done by using the arithmetic of the cyclotomic extensions where the problem is naturally posed. When k is divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2) is generated by the charge conjugation C. If k is not divisible by 3, the automorphism group (Z_2 x Z_2) is generated by C and the Altsch\"uler--Lacki--Zaugg automorphism. Although the combinatorial analysis can become more involved, the techniques used here for SU(3) can be applied to other algebras.Comment: 21 pages, plain TeX, DIAS-STP-92-4

    Spin/disorder correlations and duality in the c=1/2 string

    We use the method of discrete loop equations to calculate exact correlation functions of spin and disorder operators on the sphere and on the boundary of a disk in the c=1/2c = 1/2 string, both in the Ising and dual Ising matrix model formulations. For both the Ising and dual Ising theories the results on the sphere are in agreement with the KPZ/DDK scaling predictions based on Liouville theory; the results on the disk agree with the scaling predictions of Martinec, Moore, and Seiberg for boundary operators. The calculation of Ising disorder correlations on the sphere requires the use of boundary variables introduced in [hep-th/9510199], which have no matrix model analog. A subtlety in the calculation on the disk arises because the expansions of the correlation functions have leading singular terms which are nonuniversal; we show that this issue may be resolved by using separate cosmological constants for each boundary domain. These results give evidence that the Kramers-Wannier duality symmetry of the c=1/2c = 1/2 conformal field theory survives coupling to quantum gravity, implying a duality symmetry of the c=1/2c = 1/2 string even in the presence of boundary operators.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX; final publication versio

    We examine general aspects of parity functions arising in rational conformal field theories, as a result of Galois theoretic properties of modular transformations. We focus more specifically on parity functions associated with affine Lie algebras, for which we give two efficient formulas.
