Relationships of the Genera \u3ci\u3eAcanthametropus, Analetris,\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eSiphluriscus\u3c/i\u3e, and Re-Evaluation of Their Higher Classification (Ephemeroptera: Pisciforma)

The historical higher classification of the genera Acanthametropus Tshernova, Analetris Edmunds, and Siphluriscus Ulmer is reviewed. The first comprehensive generic description of Siphluriscus is given, and first figures of wings are provided. A cladistic analysis of adult and larval characters of Acanthametropus and Analetris. and adult characters of Siphluriscus reveal a close relationship between the former two genera, which represent a well-defined clade based on five identified synapomorphies; however, Siphluriscus, which has been classified with them in the past, does not share any apomorphies with them but instead shares apomorphies with the genera of Siphlonuridae sensu stricto. Acanthametropus and Analetris are recombined in the family Acanthametropodidae, suppressing Analetrididae; and Siphluriscus is reassigned to the family Siphlonuridae sensu stricto, although taxon rank for both of these clades is still tentative and awaits comparative cladistic analysis of the entire suborder Pisciforma. The relationship to each other of these clades also remains in doubt. Stackelbergisca Tshernova, a fossil genus formerly classified with the three extant genera apparently does not share any of the 11 apomorphies used in this study, and is placed as family incertae within the Pisciforma

A General Effective Theory for Dense Quark Matter

A general effective action for quark matter at nonzero temperature and/or nonzero density is derived. Irrelevant quark modes are distinguished from relevant quark modes, and hard from soft gluon modes, by introducing two separate cut-offs in momentum space, one for quarks, Λq\Lambda_q, and one for gluons, Λg\Lambda_g. Irrelevant quark modes and hard gluon modes are then exactly integrated out in the functional integral representation of the QCD partition function. Depending on the specific choice for Λq\Lambda_q and Λg\Lambda_g, the resulting effective action contains well-known effective actions for hot and/or dense quark matter, for instance the ``Hard Thermal Loop'' (HTL) or the ``Hard Dense Loop'' (HDL) action, as well as the high-density effective theory proposed by Hong and others.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, contribution to proceedings of SEWM 200

Design and evaluation of dynamic policy-based flow redirection for multihomed mobile netwotks

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a solution for dynamic redirection of traffic flows for multihomed mobile networks. The solution was developed for a mobile user that disposes of a Personal Area Network (PAN) with a Personal Mobile Router (PMR), in order to achieve Always Best Connected(ABC) service by distributing flows belonging to different applications among the most appropriate access networks. Designed in a modular way for a NEMO based mobility and multihoming support, the proposed flow redirection solution can be easily coupled with and controlled by dynamic traffic policies that come from advanced network intelligence, according to the currently available network resources and user and application requirements. A prototype implementation was validated and assessed on a testbed as proof-of-concept

Comment on "Time-Dependent Density-Matrix Renormalization Group: A Systematic Method for the Study of Quantum Many-Body Out-of- Equilibrium Systems"

In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 256403(2002), cond-mat/0109158] Cazalilla and Marston proposed a time-dependent density- matrix renormalization group (TdDMRG) algorithm for the accurate evaluation of out-of-equilibrium properties of quantum many-body systems. For a point contact junction between two Luttinger liquids, a current oscillation develops after initial transient in the insulating regime. Here we would like to point out that (a) the observed oscillation is an artifact of the method; (b) the TdDMRG can be significantly improved by incorporating the non-equilibrium evolution of the goundstate into the density matrix.Comment: 1 page, 2 figure

Does SN 1987A contain a rapidly vibrating neutron star

If the recently reported 0.5 ms-period pulsed optical signal from the direction of Supernova 1987A originated in a young neutron star, its interpretation as a rotational period has difficulties. The surface magnetic field would have to be much lower than expected, and the high rotation rate may rule out preferred nuclear equations of state. It is pointed out here that a remnant radial vibration of a neutron star, excited in the supernova event, may survive for several years with about the observed (gravitationally redshifted) period. Heavy ions at the low-density stellar surface, periodically shocked by the vibration, may efficiently produce narrow pulses of optical cyclotron radiation in a surface field of about a trillion gauss
