    Performance characterizations and thermodynamic analysis of magnesium sulfate-impregnated zeolite 13X and activated alumina composite sorbents for thermal energy storage

    The composite sorbents of MgSO4-impregnated zeolite 13X and activated alumina are developed for thermal energy storage (TES) with different temperature ranges. The sorption and desorption characteristics of raw and MgSO4-impregnated activated alumina are studied, and the performances of the selected sorbents are tested in a closed-system TES device. The results are compared with those of raw and MgSO4-impregnated zeolite 13X. It is shown that the impregnated MgSO4 improves the overall TES performances of zeolite 13X and activated alumina. Compared to the raw host matrices, the impregnated MgSO4 remarkably accelerates the temperature-rising rate of zeolite 13X to about three times and improves the temperature lift of activated alumina by 32.5%. The experimental energy storage densities of MgSO4-impregnated zeolite 13X and activated alumina are 123.4 kWh m−3and 82.6 kWh m−3, respectively. The sorption temperature region of activated alumina is more aligned with the preferred hydration temperature of MgSO4 in comparison with zeolite 13X. The hydration characteristics of MgSO4 can resolve the solution leakage issue of open systems. Thermodynamic analysis is conducted to evaluate the performances of the TES device with different sorbents.     Interactive user modeling for personalized access to museum collections : the Rijksmuseum case study

    In this paper we present an approach for personalized access to museum collections. We use a RDF/OWL specification of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam collections as a driver for an interactive dialog. The user gives his/her judgment on the artefacts, indicating likes or dislikes. The elicited user model is further used for generating recommendations of artefacts and topics. In this way we support exploration and discovery of information in museum collections. A user study provided insights in characteristics of our target user group, and showed how novice and expert users employ their background knowledge and implicit interest in order to elicit their art preference in the museum collections

    Induction of the CtsR regulon improves Xylanase production in <i>Bacillus subtilis</i>

    Background The bacterium Bacillus subtilis is extensively used for the commercial production of enzymes due to its efficient protein secretion capacity. However, the efficiency of secretion varies greatly between enzymes, and despite many years of research, optimization of enzyme production is still largely a matter of trial-and-error. Genome-wide transcriptome analysis seems a useful tool to identify relevant secretion bottlenecks, yet to this day, only a limited number of transcriptome studies have been published that focus on enzyme secretion in B. subtilis. Here, we examined the effect of high-level expression of the commercially important enzyme endo-1,4-β-xylanase XynA on the B. subtilis transcriptome using RNA-seq.Results  Using the novel gene-set analysis tool GINtool, we found a reduced activity of the CtsR regulon when XynA was overproduced. This regulon comprises several protein chaperone genes, including clpC, clpE and clpX, and is controlled by transcriptional repression. CtsR levels are directly controlled by regulated proteolysis, involving ClpC and its cognate protease ClpP. When we abolished this negative feedback, by inactivating the repressor CtsR, the XynA production increased by 25%.Conclusions Overproduction of enzymes can reduce the pool of Clp protein chaperones in B. subtilis, presumably due to negative feedback regulation. Breaking this feedback can improve enzyme production yields. Considering the conserved nature of Clp chaperones and their regulation, this method might benefit high-yield enzyme production in other organisms

    A Co-axial Multi-tube Heat Exchanger Applicable for a Geothermal ORC Power Plant

    AbstractThe study proposes a Co-axial multi-tube heat exchanger (CMTHE) applicable to geothermal heat extraction. The heat exchanger is integrated with a 50kW geothermal ORC power plant having a working fluid of R-245fa. Two field tests were performed to examine the system response of the ORC system subject to change of CMTHE. In case 1 where the flow rate in the shell-side of CMTHE is maintained, the pressure variation in the shell-side of CMTHE casts minor variations on heat extraction, ORC power generation, and ORC efficiency during the transient. Moreover, the effect of pressure has barely any influence of the final states of heat extraction, ORC power generation, and ORC efficiency. In case 2 where the pressure is preserved in the CMTHE, it is found that a decrease of flow rate in the CMTHE results in degradation of heat extraction, ORC power generation and ORC system efficiency. On the contrary, increasing the flow rate in the CMTHE leads to a rise of heat extraction, ORC power generation and ORC system efficiency. Unlike that in case 1, the effect of flow rate has a detectable effect on the final states of heat extraction, ORC power generation, and ORC efficiency

    We examine the long wave length limit of the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation irreducible static density-density response function by evaluating the charge induced by an external charge. Our results are consistent with the compressibility sum rule and inconsistent with earlier work that did not account for consistency between the exchange-local-field and the disorder potential.     Electronic states and optical properties of GaAs/AlAs and GaAs/vacuum superlattices by the linear combination of bulk bands method

    The linear combination of bulk bands method recently introduced by Wang, Franceschetti and Zunger [Phys. Rev. Lett.78, 2819 (1997)] is applied to a calculation of energy bands and optical constants of (GaAs)n_n/(AlAs)n_n and (GaAs)n_n/(vacuum)n_n (001) superlattices with n ranging from 4 to 20. Empirical pseudopotentials are used for the calculation of the bulk energy bands. Quantum-confined induced shifts of critical point energies are calculated and are found to be larger for the GaAs/vacuum system. The E1E_1 peak in the absorption spectra has a blue shift and splits into two peaks for decreasing superlattice period; the E2E_2 transition instead is found to be split for large-period GaAs/AlAs superlattices. The band contribution to linear birefringence of GaAs/AlAs superlattices is calculated and compared with recent experimental results of Sirenko et al. [Phys. Rev. B 60, 8253 (1999)]. The frequency-dependent part reproduces the observed increase with decreasing superlattice period, while the calculated zero-frequency birefringence does not account for the experimental results and points to the importance of local-field effects.Comment: 10 pages, 11 .eps figures, 1 tabl

    The association between distal findings and proximal colorectal neoplasia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objectives: Whether screening participants with distal hyperplastic polyps (HPs) detected by flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) should be followed by subsequent colonoscopy is controversial. We evaluated the association between distal HPs and proximal neoplasia (PN)/advanced proximal neoplasia (APN) in asymptomatic, average-risk patients. Methods: We searched Ovid Medline, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from inception to 30 June 2016 and included all screening studies that examined the relationship between different distal findings and PN/APN. Data were independently extracted by two reviewers with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. We pooled absolute risks and odds ratios (ORs) with a random effects meta-analysis. Seven subgroup analyses were performed according to study characteristics. Heterogeneity was characterized with theI2 statistics. Results: We analyzed 28 studies (104,961 subjects). When compared with normal distal findings, distal HP was not associated with PN (OR=1.16, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.89–1.51,P=0.14,I2=40%) or APN (OR=1.09, 95% CI=0.87–1.36,P=0.39,I2=5%), while subjects with distal non-advanced or advanced adenoma had higher odds of PN/APN. Higher odds of PN/APN were observed for more severe distal lesions. Weaker association between distal and proximal findings was noticed in studies with higher quality, larger sample size, population-based design, and more stringent endoscopy quality-control measures. The Egger’s regression tests showed allP&gt;0.05. Conclusions: Distal HP is not associated with PN/APN in asymptomatic screening population when compared with normal distal findings. Hence, the presence of distal HP alone detected by FS does not automatically indicate colonoscopy referral for all screening participants, as other risk factors of PN/APN should be considered
