    Large amplitude drop shape oscillations

    An experimental study of large amplitude drop shape oscillation was conducted in immiscible liquids systems and with levitated free liquid drops in air. In liquid-liquid systems the results indicate the existence of familiar characteristics of nonlinear phenomena. The resonance frequency of the fundamental quadrupole mode of stationary, low viscosity Silicone oil drops acoustically levitated in water falls to noticeably low values as the amplitude of oscillation is increased. A typical, experimentally determined relative frequency decrease of a 0.5 cubic centimeters drop would be about 10% when the maximum deformed shape is characterized by a major to minor axial ratio of 1.9. On the other hand, no change in the fundamental mode frequency could be detected for 1 mm drops levitated in air. The experimental data for the decay constant of the quadrupole mode of drops immersed in a liquid host indicate a slight increase for larger oscillation amplitudes. A qualitative investigation of the internal fluid flows for such drops revealed the existence of steady internal circulation within drops oscillating in the fundamental and higher modes. The flow field configuration in the outer host liquid is also significantly altered when the drop oscillation amplitude becomes large

    Hysteresis and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Antiferromagnetic Nd2xCexCuO4Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4}

    The out-of-plane resistivity (ρc\rho_c) and magnetoresistivity (MR) are studied in antiferromangetic (AF) Nd2xCexCuO4Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4} single crystals, which have three types of noncollinear antiferromangetic spin structures. The apparent signatures are observed in ρc(T)\rho_c(T) measured at the zero-field and 14 T at the spin structure transitions, giving a definite evidence for the itinerant electrons directly coupled to the localized spins. One of striking feature is an anisotropy of the MR with a fourfold symmetry upon rotating the external field (B) within ab plane in the different phases, while twofold symmetry at spin reorientation transition temperatures. The intriguing thermal hysteresis in ρc(T,B)\rho_c(T,B) and magnetic hysteresis in MR are observed at spin reorientation transition temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    System for monitoring physical characteristics of fluids

    An apparatus and method are described for measuring physical characteristics of fluid, by placing a drop of the fluid in a batch of a second fluid and passing acoustic waves through the bath. The applied frequency of the acoustic waves is varied, to determine the precise value of a frequency at which the drop undergoes resonant oscillations. The resonant frequency indicates the interfacial tension of the drop in the bath, and the interfacial tension can indicate physical properties of the fluid in the drop

    Giant isotope effect and spin state transition induced by oxygen isotope exchange in (Pr1xSmx)0.7Ca0.3CoO3Pr_{1-x}Sm_x)_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}CoO_3

    Full text link
    We systematically investigate effect of oxygen isotope in (Pr1xSmx)0.7Ca0.3CoO3(Pr_{1-x}Sm_x)_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}CoO_3 which shows a crossover with x from ferromagnetic metal to the insulator with spin-state transition. A striking feature is that effect of oxygen isotope on the ferromagnetic transition is negligible in the metallic phase, while replacing 16O^{16}O with 18O^{18}O leads to a giant up-shift of the spin-state transition temperature (TsT_s) in the insulating phase, especially TsT_s shifts from 36 to 54 K with isotope component αS=4.7\alpha_S=-4.7 for the sample with x=0.175. A metal-insulator transition is induced by oxygen isotope exchange in the sample x=0.172 being close to the insulating phase. The contrasting behaviors observed in the two phases can be well explained by occurrence of static Jahn-Teller distortions in the insulating phase, while absence of them in the metallic phase.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
