South China Tropical Forest Changes in Response to Economic Development and Protection Policies

The destruction of tropical forests continues to attract attention from the international community. China’s National Forest Administration has adopted protective measures for tropical forests, and efforts have been developed to balance forest protection and economic development in Hainan Island, China. However, the response of natural tropical forest to local economic development and the effectiveness of forest management and protection policies remain unclear because of complexity of tropical evergreen ecosystems. After comprehensive analysis of spectral characteristics, spatial distribution, patch shape, and other characteristics of main forests, we developed an information extraction method based on the decision tree method, combining digital elevation model (DEM) and forest planning maps, and established flowcharts and processes for sophisticated object-based information extraction. The accuracy of our method was 92%, and the method proved to be applicable and effective in the classification of complex surface features in a tropical evergreen ecosystem. Forces resulting in the change of these forests were explored by analyzing the relationships between economic development, protection policies, as well as environmental factors

    Targeting Mnks for Cancer Therapy

Deregulation of protein synthesis is a common event in human cancer and a key player in translational control is eIF4E. Elevated expression levels of eIF4E promote cancer development and progression. Recent findings suggest that eIF4E activity is a key determinant of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR and Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK mediated tumorigenic activity and targeting eIF4E should have a major impact on these pathways in human cancer. The function of eIF4E is modulated through phosphorylation of a conserved serine (Ser209) by Mnk1 and Mnk2 downstream of ERK. While the phosphorylation event is necessary for oncogenic transformation, it seems to be dispensable for normal development. Hence, pharmacologic Mnk inhibitors may provide non-toxic and effective anti-cancer strategy. Strong circumstantial evidence indicates that Mnk inhibition presents attractive therapeutic potential, but the lack of selective Mnk inhibitors has so far confounded pharmacological target validation and clinical development

Regulation, targets and functions of CSK.

The Src family kinases (SFK) plays an important role in multiple signal transduction pathways. Aberrant activation of SFKs leads to diseases such as cancer, blood disorders, and bone pathologies. By phosphorylating and inactivating SFKs, the C-terminal Src kinase (CSK) serves as the key negative regulator of SFKs. Similar to Src, CSK is composed of SH3, SH2, and a catalytic kinase domain. However, while the Src kinase domain is intrinsically active, the CSK kinase domain is intrinsically inactive. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that CSK is involved in various physiological processes including DNA repair, permeability of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), synaptic activity, astrocyte-to-neuron communication, erythropoiesis, platelet homeostasis, mast cell activation, immune and inflammation responses. As a result, dysregulation of CSK may lead to many diseases with different underlying molecular mechanisms. Furthermore, recent findings suggest that in addition to the well-established CSK-SFK axis, novel CSK-related targets and modes of CSK regulation also exist. This review focuses on the recent progress in this field for an up-to-date understanding of CSK
