    Neutron powder diffraction study on the iron-based nitride superconductor ThFeAsN

    We report neutron diffraction and transport results on the newly discovered superconducting nitride ThFeAsN with Tc=T_c= 30 K. No magnetic transition, but a weak structural distortion around 160 K, is observed cooling from 300 K to 6 K. Analysis on the resistivity, Hall transport and crystal structure suggests this material behaves as an electron optimally doped pnictide superconductors due to extra electrons from nitrogen deficiency or oxygen occupancy at the nitrogen site, which together with the low arsenic height may enhance the electron itinerancy and reduce the electron correlations, thus suppress the static magnetic order.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by EP

    Photoluminescence from nanocrystalline graphite monofluoride

    We synthesize and study the structural and optical properties of nanocrystalline graphene monofluoride and graphite monofluoride, which are carbon-based wide bandgap materials. Using laser excitations 2.41 - 5.08 eV, we identify six emission modes of graphite monofluoride, spanning the visible spectrum from red to violet. The energy and linewidth of the modes point to defect-induced midgap states as the source of the photoemission. We discuss possible candidates.     Oriented Three-Dimensional Magnetic Biskyrmion in MnNiGa Bulk Crystals

    A biskyrmion consists of two bound, topologically stable skyrmion spin textures. These coffee-bean-shaped objects have been observed in real-space in thin plates using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM). From LTEM imaging alone, it is not clear whether biskyrmions are surface-confined objects, or, analogously to skyrmions in non-centrosymmetric helimagnets, three-dimensional tube-like structures in bulk sample. Here, we investigate the biskyrmion form factor in single- and polycrystalline MnNiGa samples using small angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that biskyrmions are not long-range ordered, not even in single-crystals. Surprisingly all of the disordered biskyrmions have their in-plane symmetry axis aligned along certain directions, governed by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy.     Long-Term Nutrient Variations in the Bohai Sea Over the Past 40 Years

    As China's only continental sea, the Bohai Sea is a relatively closed environment and is vulnerable to natural changes and human activities. In this paper, the long-term variations in nutrients in the Bohai Sea and the potential influencing factors were analyzed based on historical summer and winter data from 1978 to 2016. The results showed that the concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the Bohai Sea continuously increased from 1990 and rapidly increased after 2002, the phosphate (PO 4 -P) concentration exhibited a decreasing trend, and the silicate (SiO 3 -Si) concentration decreased from 1978 to 1987 and increased from 1987 to 2008. The nutrient concentrations were lower in summer than in winter, and the bottom concentrations were higher than the surface concentrations in summer, whereas the vertical differences were insignificant in winter. The dominant factor determining the long-term variations in DIN were atmospheric deposition and nonpoint sources due to various human activities; the primary factors affecting PO 4 -P were riverine inputs and nonpoint sources related to natural changes and human activities; the primary factors afftecting SiO 3 -Si were riverine inputs. The N/P ratio followed the DIN variation, the Si/P ratio followed the SiO 3 -Si variation, and the Si/N ratio decreased. The nutrient ratios were lower at the bottom than at the surface and were lower in winter than in summer. The nutrient limitation changed from nitrogen limitation to phosphorus and silicon limitations. The long-term nutrient variations in the Bohai Sea have potential ecological impacts on the local red tide features

    Shotgun metagenomic sequencing reveals skin microbial variability from different facial sites

    Biogeography (body site) is known to be one of the main factors influencing the composition of the skin microbial community. However, site-associated microbial variability at a fine-scale level was not well-characterized since there was a lack of high-resolution recognition of facial microbiota across kingdoms by shotgun metagenomic sequencing. To investigate the explicit microbial variance in the human face, 822 shotgun metagenomic sequencing data from Han Chinese recently published by our group, in combination with 97 North American samples from NIH Human Microbiome Project (HMP), were reassessed. Metagenomic profiling of bacteria, fungi, and bacteriophages, as well as enriched function modules from three facial sites (forehead, cheek, and the back of the nose), was analyzed. The results revealed that skin microbial features were more alike in the forehead and cheek while varied from the back of the nose in terms of taxonomy and functionality. Analysis based on biogeographic theories suggested that neutral drift with niche selection from the host could possibly give rise to the variations. Of note, the abundance of porphyrin-producing species, i.e., Cutibacterium acnes, Cutibacterium avidum, Cutibacterium granulosum, and Cutibacterium namnetense, was all the highest in the back of the nose compared with the forehead/cheek, which was consistent with the highest porphyrin level on the nose in our population. Sequentially, the site-associated microbiome variance was confirmed in American populations; however, it was not entirely consistent. Furthermore, our data revealed correlation patterns between Propionibacterium acnes bacteriophages with genus Cutibacterium at different facial sites in both populations; however, C. acnes exhibited a distinct correlation with P. acnes bacteriophages in Americans/Chinese. Taken together, in this study, we explored the fine-scale facial site-associated changes in the skin microbiome and provided insight into the ecological processes underlying facial microbial variations

    Gradual Enhancement of Stripe-Type Antiferromagnetism in Spin Ladder Material BaFe2_2S3_3 Under Pressure

    We report pressure-dependent neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation/rotation measurements combined with first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of BaFe2_2S3_3 under pressure. The experimental results reveal a gradual enhancement of the stripe-type ordering temperature with increasing pressure up to 2.6 GPa and no observable change in the size of the ordered moment. The ab initio calculations suggest that the magnetism is highly sensitive to the Fe-S bond lengths and angles, clarifying discrepancies with previously published results. In contrast to our experimental observations, the calculations predict a monotonic reduction of the ordered moment with pressure. We suggest that the robustness of the stripe-type antiferromagnetism is due to strong electron correlations not fully considered in the calculations

    Seasonal Variations in Voluntary Intake and Apparent Digestibility of Forages in Goats Grazing on Introduced Pasture

    The nutrient composition of pasture, voluntary intake and digestibility of diet ingested by goats grazing on an introduced Leymus chinensis pasture were measured across spring (May), summer (July), autumn (October) and winter (March). In each season, 12 Inner Mongolian Cashmere goats (6 wethers and 6 does with an average live weight of 22.2±1.3 kg and 19.5±0.8 kg, respectively) were used to graze on a 2 hectares size paddock. Diet selection was observed and the plant parts selected by grazing goats and whole plant L. chinensis were sampled simultaneously. The alkane pair C32:C33 and C36 were used to estimate intake and digestibility, respectively. The results showed that the plant parts selected by goats had higher crude protein (CP) and lower acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) than the whole plant, especially in the autumn and winter. The voluntary intake of dry matter (DM), CP, ADF, NDF, and metabolizable energy (ME) by goats was highest in summer (p<0.05). The goats ingested more CP, ME, and less ADF in spring than in autumn (p<0.05). The intakes of DM, CP, and ME were lowest in winter (p<0.05). There were significant differences in nutrient intake between wethers and does in each season, except for the ADF and ME intake per metabolic weight (LW0.75). The nutrient digestibilities were higher in spring and summer, and decreased significantly during the autumn and winter (p<0.05). Goats, especially wethers, had a relative constant NDF digestibility across seasons, however, the apparent digestibility of CP in both wethers and does, decreased to negative values in winter.
