Intimate Partner Violence in Immigrant/Refugee Populations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common type of violence affecting women. Globally, Central Africa and South Asia have some of the highest rates of IPV. In Vermont, the majority of refugees are from these regions. Individual, interpersonal, and especially cultural values play critical roles in the definition/appraisal and decision to seek help in these women. Do partnered women discriminate men's faces less along the attractiveness dimension?

Romantic relationships can have positive effects on health and reproductive fitness. Given that attractive potential alternative mates can pose a threat to romantic relationships, some researchers have proposed that partnered individuals discriminate opposite-sex individuals less along the physical attractiveness dimension than do unpartnered individuals. This effect is proposed to devalue attractive (i.e., high quality) alternative mates and help maintain romantic relationships. Here we investigated this issue by comparing the effects of men's attractiveness on partnered and unpartnered women's performance on two response measures for which attractiveness is known to be important: memory for face photographs (Study 1) and the reward value of faces (Study 2). Consistent with previous research, women's memory was poorer for face photographs of more attractive men (Study 1) and more attractive men's faces were more rewarding (Study 2). However, in neither study were these effects of attractiveness modulated by women's partnership status or partnered women's reported commitment to or happiness with their romantic relationship. The Copyrightability of Legal Complaints

In 2002, a renowned U.S. class action law firm began placing copyright notices on its legal complaints. Cease-and-desist letters have been filed against several firms that lifted language off of the copyrighted complaints. Although no litigation has ensued to determine whether legal complaints are copyrightable, this Note asserts that legal complaints are copyrightable subject matter under the Copyright Act of 1976 despite the limitations of the idea-expression dichotomy, merger doctrine, useful article doctrine, and fair use defense. This Note focuses on the originality requirement of the Copyright Act, as interpreted through U.S. case law, and contends that legal complaints exhibit sufficient originality to warrant copyright protection

Pancake bouncing on superhydrophobic surfaces

Engineering surfaces that promote rapid drop detachment is of importance to a wide range of applications including anti-icing, dropwise condensation6, and self-cleaning. Here we show how superhydrophobic surfaces patterned with lattices of submillimetre-scale posts decorated with nano-textures can generate a counter-intuitive bouncing regime: drops spread on impact and then leave the surface in a flattened, pancake shape without retracting. This allows for a four-fold reduction in contact time compared to conventional complete rebound. We demonstrate that the pancake bouncing results from the rectification of capillary energy stored in the penetrated liquid into upward motion adequate to lift the drop. Moreover, the timescales for lateral drop spreading over the surface and for vertical motion must be comparable. In particular, by designing surfaces with tapered micro/nanotextures which behave as harmonic springs, the timescales become independent of the impact velocity, allowing the occurrence of pancake bouncing and rapid drop detachment over a wide range of impact velocities.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 31 references, + 5 pages of supplementary informatio
