    Orthogonal Temporal Interpolation for Zero-Shot Video Recognition

    Full text link
    Zero-shot video recognition (ZSVR) is a task that aims to recognize video categories that have not been seen during the model training process. Recently, vision-language models (VLMs) pre-trained on large-scale image-text pairs have demonstrated impressive transferability for ZSVR. To make VLMs applicable to the video domain, existing methods often use an additional temporal learning module after the image-level encoder to learn the temporal relationships among video frames. Unfortunately, for video from unseen categories, we observe an abnormal phenomenon where the model that uses spatial-temporal feature performs much worse than the model that removes temporal learning module and uses only spatial feature. We conjecture that improper temporal modeling on video disrupts the spatial feature of the video. To verify our hypothesis, we propose Feature Factorization to retain the orthogonal temporal feature of the video and use interpolation to construct refined spatial-temporal feature. The model using appropriately refined spatial-temporal feature performs better than the one using only spatial feature, which verifies the effectiveness of the orthogonal temporal feature for the ZSVR task. Therefore, an Orthogonal Temporal Interpolation module is designed to learn a better refined spatial-temporal video feature during training. Additionally, a Matching Loss is introduced to improve the quality of the orthogonal temporal feature. We propose a model called OTI for ZSVR by employing orthogonal temporal interpolation and the matching loss based on VLMs. The ZSVR accuracies on popular video datasets (i.e., Kinetics-600, UCF101 and HMDB51) show that OTI outperforms the previous state-of-the-art method by a clear margin

    Interplay between multiple charge-density waves and the relationship with superconductivity in Pdx_xHoTe3_{3}

    Full text link
    HoTe3_{3}, a member of the rare-earth tritelluride (RRTe3_{3}) family, and its Pd-intercalated compounds, Pdx_xHoTe3_{3}, where superconductivity (SC) sets in as the charge-density wave (CDW) transition is suppressed by the intercalation of a small amount of Pd, are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electrical resistivity. Two incommensurate CDWs with perpendicular nesting vectors are observed in HoTe3_{3} at low temperatures. With a slight Pd intercalation (xx = 0.01), the large CDW gap decreases and the small one increases. The momentum dependence of the gaps along the inner Fermi surface (FS) evolves from orthorhombicity to near tetragonality, manifesting the competition between two CDW orders. At xx = 0.02, both CDW gaps decreases with the emergence of SC. Further increasing the content of Pd for xx = 0.04 will completely suppress the CDW instabilities and give rise to the maximal SC order. The evolution of the electronic structures and electron-phonon couplings (EPCs) of the multiple CDWs upon Pd intercalation are carefully scrutinized. We discuss the interplay between multiple CDW orders, and the competition between CDW and SC in detail.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Background/Aims: Aberrant localization and over-expression of Ezrin have been reported to be implicated in cervical cancer (CC). Aberrant promoter methylation of some gene families may serve as potential diagnostic biomarkers for CC. In this study, we explored the correlation of promoter methylation of the Ezrin gene with the incidence and prognosis of CC. Methods: Cervical tissues from a total of 483 patients with CC were collected from the China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University. Samples were assigned into four groups accordingly to pathological diagnosis, namely the control group, the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I group, the CIN II-III group and the CC group. Reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was performed to detect the mRNA expression of Ezrin. Methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) was used to detect the promoter methylation of the Ezrin gene. The Kaplan-Meier product-limit method and the log-rank analysis were used for survival analysis, the Cox regression analysis for the prognostic factors for CC, and the logistic regression analysis for the risk factors for the occurrence of CC. Results: The methylation rate of the Ezrin gene was correspondingly increased from the control, the CIN I, the CIN II-III to the CC groups. Over-expressed mRNA of Ezrin was determined in CC tissues. The mRNA expression of Ezrin was correlated with tumor size, lymphatic metastasis, pathological grade and clinical stage (FIGO). The risk factors for the occurrence of CC were the number of abortions and the promoter methylation of the Ezrin gene. Poor prognosis of CC correlated to lymphatic metastasis, higher pathological grade, higher FIGO stage and positive Ezrin promoter methylation. Conclusion: These findings indicate that promoter methylation of the Ezrin gene may play a crucial role in carcinogenesis, progression and prognosis of CC

    Identification and Comparison of Chemosensory Genes in the Antennal Transcriptomes of Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus and E. brandti Fed on Ailanthus altissima

    The key to the coexistence of two or more species on the same host is ecological niche separation. Adult Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus and E. brandti both feed on the tree of heaven, Ailanthus altissima, but on different sections of the plant. Olfaction plays a vital role in foraging for food resources. Chemosensory genes on the antennae, the main organ for insect olfaction, might explain their feeding differentiation. In the present study, we identified 130 and 129 putative chemosensory genes in E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti, respectively, by antennal transcriptome sequencing, including 31 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs), 11 chemosensory proteins (CSPs), 49 odorant receptors (ORs), 17 ionotropic receptors (IRs), 19 gustatory receptors (GRs), and three sensory neuron membrane proteins (SNMPs) in E. scrobiculatus and 28 OBPs, 11 CSPs, 45 ORs, 25 IRs, 17 GRs, and three SNMPs in E. brandti. We inferred that EscrOBP8 (EscrPBP1), EscrOBP24 (EscrPBP2) and EbraOBP8 (EbraPBP1), EbraOBP24 (EbraPBP2) were putative PBPs by the phylogenetic analysis. We identified species-specific OR transcripts (10 EscrORs and 8 EbraORs) with potential roles in the recognition of specific volatiles of A. altissima. In addition to conserved “antennal IRs,” we also found several “divergent IRs” orthologues in E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti, such as EscrIR16, EbraIR19, and EbraIR20. Compared with other chemosensory genes, GRs between E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti shared lower amino acid identities, which could explain the different feeding habits of the species. We examined OBP expression patterns in various tissues and sexes. Although amino acid sequence similarities were high between EscrOBPs and EbraOBPs, the homologous OBPs showed different tissue expression pattern between two weevils. Our systematic comparison of chemosensory genes in E. scrobiculatus and E. brandti provides a foundation for studies of olfaction and olfactory differentiation in the two weevils as well as a theoretical basis for studying species differentiation
