Human Capital, Education, and Entrepreneurs: Evidence from the Yangtze River Delta

This paper seeks to examine the relationship between education demand and entrepreneurs in the process of enhancing the growth of human capital in China. We develop a theoretical model that incorporates the important roles played by human capital, education and entrepreneurs. Then, we derive an immigration condition under which the demand for education depends on the existence of entrepreneurs. Finally, we test whether this condition holds true in China, using a panel data set from the Yangtze River Delta which is considered a key barometer of Chinese economy. The empirical results reveal a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurs and education demand in the Yangtze River Delta, suggesting that if we can find ways to promote the growth of entrepreneurial endeavors, we could spur the growth of education demand and further drive human capital accumulation in China

Impact of industrial linkages on firm performance in development zones

This article investigates the effect of industrial linkages on firm performance in Chinese development zones, using Jiangsu Province as a case study. An ordered response model based on the dependent variable being ordinal was developed. The empirical results reveal an insignificant relationship between industrial linkages and firm performance. Our interpretation of this finding mainly lies with the global and domestic challenges that have changed the way participating firms operate and organize in the development zones of Jiangsu. When many other economic factors take precedence over industrial linkages in driving superior firm performance, firms feel it less important to get closer to their suppliers or customers, therefore weakening the impact of industrial linkages. Although this article primarily focuses on development zones in Jiangsu Province, the findings and discussion will provide insights for other development zones in China that may be, reviewing their development strategies because most of them have similar development problems.Industrial linkages; Development zones

Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Growth:The Case of Yangtze River Delta in China

This paper firstly discusses why the economic growth in the Yangtze River Delta has been slowed down recently and suggests a need totransform the current input-based economic growth pattern into aninnovation-based one. Next, through our theoretical analysis, we find that the change of current economic growth pattern is just the innovative reallocationof production factors, and the new economic growth driven by innovation is mainly initiated by the transmutation of entrepreneurship. Finally, we test our belief with real-world evidence. It shows that the Delta has formed a mechanism in which entrepreneurship and human capital mutually promote each other. However, the interactive relationship between R&D expenditure and entrepreneurship has not been developed in general. In addition, excessive government interventions will do harm to the growth of entrepreneurs and economic development.entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth pattern

Impact of Intellectual Capital on Firm Performance: the Influence of Innovation Capability and Environmental Dynamism

The business values of intellectual capital (IntC) and innovation capability (InnoC) are enduring research questions, especially for high-tech firms. Although each one has been recognized as a critical factor for firm’s competitiveness, few studies discussed the influence of IntC and InnoC on firm performance in one integrated framework. Moreover, the moderating effects of environmental dynamism on IntC or InnoC to firm performance were often neglected. This paper developed a research model to explain IntC’s impact on firm performance, with InnoC as a mediating variable and environmental dynamism as a moderating variable. Using a survey study conducted in high-tech firms in China, we tested the research model and found that InnoC partly mediate the effect of IntC on firm performance. Environmental dynamism moderates the relationship between structural capital, relational capital, InnoC, and operational performance, as well as between structural capital and financial performance

Effects of Supervisors\u27 Technology-Mediated Interruption Behavior on Their Work-Life Balance

Although technology-mediated interruption has received substantial research attention over the past several years, most of the existing research investigates the effects of interruptions only from the perspective of the interrupted person. In this paper, we aim to answer the recent calls for research from the interrupters’ perspective and develop a research model based upon Conservation of Resources (COR) theory and Action Regulation Theory (ART) to explore the effects of supervisors’ technology-mediated interruption behavior. In this model, we propose that supervisors’ technology-mediated interruption behavior leads to information overload and sense of control, which impact work/non-work exhaustion and work/non-work performance, and eventually affect the supervisors’ perception of work-life balance. We also propose that personal characteristics including supervisors’ sense of power and computer experience will moderate the relationships between supervisors’ technology-mediated interruption behavior and information overload/sense of control. We plan to test the proposed research model using experience sampling methodology (ESM)

A critical analysis of aspects of the public enforcement of competition law in China with reference to the European Union and the United States

This thesis is concerned with the problems met by the administrative enforcers of the Antimonopoly Law (the AML 2007) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) during its public enforcement. It provides solutions to some of these problems with reference to EU competition law and US antitrust law. Although the thesis cannot solve all the problems once for all, it does provide effective solutions to the three following important issues: 1. how to establish and improve transparency of Chinese merger control procedure; 2. how to allocate public enforcement power of the AML 2007 between the Central and Provincial enforcers; and, 3. how to improve the protection of right of concerned parties during the AML 2007’s public enforcement. Chinese Antimonopoly Law’s public enforcement is still immature and experiencing further challenges for development. In order to establish a more effective, transparent and fair public enforcement regime, the thesis chooses EU competition law and US antitrust law to compare. Not only because they are more advanced, but also, because the AML 2007 is heavily influenced by the two regimes (especially the EU competition law regime). However, it is noteworthy that the experience from EU and US cannot solve all problems met by Chinese administrative enforcers; especially those are caused by Chinese political and economic structure which both EU and US do/did not have. Nevertheless, by solving the problems met in the above three aspects, the thesis has contributed to a more effective, transparent and fair public enforcement procedure for Chinese Antimonopoly Law. Translations of titles, authors, and publishers from Chinese works are unofficial, and the laws in this thesis are up to date at December 2012

Generalizations of the Erd\H{o}s-Kac Theorem and the Prime Number Theorem

In this paper, we study the linear independence between the distribution of the number of prime factors of integers and that of the largest prime factors of integers. Respectively, under a restriction on the largest prime factors of integers, we will refine the Erd\H{o}s-Kac Theorem and Loyd's recent result on Bergelson and Richter's dynamical generalizations of the Prime Number Theorem. At the end, we will show that the analogue of these results holds with respect to the Erd\H{o}s-Pomerance Theorem as well.Comment: 20 pages. We establish several refined strong multiplicity one results for paramodular cusp forms by using the spinor and standard LL-functions with the combination of the methods from both of automorphic side and Galois side.Comment: 28 page
