    Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma of the kidney: A case report

    Experimental Study on Non-Darcian Flow in Phyllite Bimrocks With the Orientation of Blocks

    Phyllite bimrocks are widely distributed in the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, and it is the main geomaterial for landslides, slopes, dam basement and subgrades in this area. However, the flow behavior of phyllite bimrocks is unknown, especially the flow behavior of phyllite bimrocks with the orientation of blocks. This paper reports the coupling characteristics of flow and orientation of blocks in phyllite bimrocks. The flow behavior of phyllite bimrocks with different block percentages and block sizes was studied by a series of permeability experiments. A large-scale permeability apparatus was designed, and specimens with varying percentages of block and block sizes were produced by the same dip angle of blocks and compaction degree. Based on the Reynolds number analysis, it was found that the flow in phyllite bimrocks becomes laminar to turbulent under lower hydraulic gradient, and the flow behavior of phyllite bimrocks does not obey Darcy’s law. Furthermore, the Forchheimer equation is better at analyzing the flow behavior of phyllite bimrocks compared with Izbash equation. In addition, based on the coefficients a in the Forchheimer equation, the hydraulic conductivity of phyllite bimrocks can be calculated. The calculation result shows that when the percentage of blocks is 25%, the hydraulic conductivity reaches the minimum. Besides, the hydraulic conductivity increases approximately linear with the block size increase. On the basis of previous studies, coefficients A and B of the Forchheimer equation are detected by the normalized objective function analysis. The results would provide a valuable reference for risk assessment and prevention of phyllite bimrock slope

    Heparinization and hybridization of electrospun tubular graft for improved endothelialization and anticoagulation

    Supplementary data to this article can be found online at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.msec.2020.111861.Constructing biomimetic structure and immobilizing antithrombus factors are two effective methods to ensure rapid endothelialization and long-term anticoagulation for small-diameter vascular grafts. However, few literatures are available regarding simultaneous implementation of these two strategies. Herein, a nano-micro-fibrous biomimetic graft with a heparin coating was prepared via a step-by-step in situ biosynthesis method to improve potential endothelialization and anticoagulation. The 4-mm-diameter tubular graft consists of electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) microfibers and entangled bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) nanofibers with heparin coating on dual fibers. The hybridized and heparinized graft possesses suitable pore structure that facilitates endothelia cells adhesion and proliferation but prevents infiltration of fibrous tissue and blood leakage. In addition, it shows higher mechanical properties than those of bare CA and hybridized CA/BNC grafts, which match well with native blood vessels. Moreover, this dually modified graft exhibits improved blood compatibility and endothelialization over the counterparts without hybridization or heparinization according to the testing results of platelet adhesion, cell morphology, and protein expression of von Willebrand Factor. This novel graft with dual modifications shows promising as a new small-diameter vascular graft.     Characteristics of DNA-AuNP networks on cell membranes and real-time movies for viral infection

    AbstractThis data article provides complementary data for the article entitled “DNA-AuNP networks on cell membranes as a protective barrier to inhibit viral attachment, entry and budding” Li et al. (2016) [1]. The experimental methods for the preparation and characterization of DNA-conjugated nanoparticle networks on cell membranes were described. Confocal fluorescence images, agarose gel electrophoresis images and hydrodynamic diameter of DNA-conjugated gold nanoparticle (DNA-AuNP) networks were presented. In addition, we have prepared QDs-labeled RSV (QDs-RSV) to real-time monitor the RSV infection on HEp-2 cells in the absence and presence of DNA-AuNP networks. Finally, the cell viability of HEp-2 cells coated by six types of DNA-nanoparticle networks was determined after RSV infection

    Clinical experience exchange of 3 cases with Fournier’s gangrene

    Fournier’s gangrene (FG), also known as necrotizing fasciitis, is a condition that affects the genitalia and perineum, resulting in the rapid development of necrosis and gangrene in infected tissues and potentially spreading to adjacent tissues, including the abdominal wall. It mainly affects males and requires prompt treatment to prevent potentially life-threatening complications. In Case 1, a 64-year-old man with type 2 diabetes was diagnosed with FG due to a scrotal skin injury after scratching his scrotal skin. The patient underwent radical debridement, treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, negative pressure wound treatment, and skin transplantation. In Case 2, a 79-year-old man suffered from a sebaceous cyst of the scrotum that had been scratched for seven days, resulting in black and necrotic skin of the scrotum. He was diagnosed with FG and underwent radical debridement and drainage of pus, followed by anti-infection treatment, negative pressure wound treatment, and skin transplantation. In Case 3, a 48-year-old male injured at the scrotum’s base developed swelling, pain, foul odor and pus discharge and was diagnosed with FG. The patient underwent emergency treatment, including incision and drainage of the scrotum and right lower abdominal wall abscess, as well as wound debridement. Ultimately, all three patients’ scrotal wounds returned to normal, but Case 2 was complicated by blood vessel thrombosis in both lower limbs. Early surgical debridement is a necessary intervention for FG, along with active postoperative anti-infection treatment and measures to prevent the occurrence of complications

    The Chinese Translation Study of the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire

    PurposeThe purpose of this study was to perform the translation and adaption of the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire into Chinese and assess the reliability of the Chinese version.Materials and MethodsThe Chinese version of the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire was created from a standard forward-backward translation. A total of 371 volunteers, aged between 20 and 89 years, participated in this survey. Participants were divided into three age-groups (Young, Middle-aged, and Elderly), and subgroup differences were examined by independent samples t-tests, ANOVA analysis as well as post-hoc analysis. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to test the association between the total scores and each subscore (CRI-Education, CRI-WorkingActivity, and CRI-LeisureTime). The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire were assessed. The test-retest reliability was measured among 40 participants with a 2-week interval using intraclass correlation coefficient.ResultsStrong correlations were observed between the total scores and each subscore (CRI-Education, CRI-WorkingActivity, and CRI-LeisureTime: r = 0.65, 0.79, and 0.70, respectively). In contrast, it was found low to moderate correlations among three subscores. The internal consistency was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.68). The intraclass correlation coefficient for total scores of the Chinese version of the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire was 0.87 (95% CI 0.74–0.93).ConclusionThe Chinese version of the Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire was a potentially reliable and practical tool for evaluating cognitive reserve accumulated through a person's life span

    Controllable synthesis of biomimetic nano/submicro-fibrous tubes for potential small-diameter vascular grafts

    Mimicking the morphological structure of native blood vessels is critical for the development of vascular grafts. Herein, small-diameter composite vascular grafts that integrate the nanofibrous bacterial cellulose (BC) and submicrofibrous cellulose acetate (CA) were fabricated via a combined electrospinning and step-by-step in situ biosynthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation shows the nano/submicro-fibrous morphology and well-interconnected porous structure of the BC/CA grafts. It is found that the BC/CA graft with a suitable BC content demonstrates lower potential of thrombus formation and enhanced endothelialization as compared to the BC and CA counterparts. Western blotting and RT-qPCR results suggest that the BC/CA-2 graft promotes endothelialization by improving expressions of genes vWF-1 and CD31 and protein CD31. The in vivo tests demonstrate much lower inflammatory response to the BC/CA graft.
