    The Community Influence of Sponge and Coral Aquaculture in Zanzibar

    Aquaculture has been presented as a means of income for coastal communities, particularly in the context of climate change and resource exploitation. The NGO Marine Cultures in Jambiani, Zanzibar has established a sponge cultivation program for women in response to declining feasibility of seaweed farming from warming ocean temperatures. In addition, the organization strives to restore a severely damaged reef while providing employment for coral farmers and tour boat operators. This study analyzed the influence of aquaculture on community stakeholders, primarily with respect to sponge cultivation and secondarily in regard to coral farms. Using Marine Cultures as a case study, the principal aim was to investigate the impacts of sponge farms on the lives of women, with supplementary examination of the coral project and potential for community benefit. Participant observation and interviews were employed to generate qualitative data about the farms themselves, Marine Cultures, and the individuals impacted, predominantly women sponge farmers. The results of the study were a holistic narrative of Marine Cultures, four biographical sketches (three sponge farmers and one coral farmer) and a clear representation of aquaculture’s benefits to individuals. Taasisi isiyo ya kiserikali ya Kilimo bahari katika eneo la Jambiani, Zanzibar walianzisha upandaji wa spongi bahari (vinja bahari) kwa Wanawake kutoka na wasiwasi wa kushuka kwa uzalishaji wa mwani kutokana na kupanda kwa joto la bahari. Kwa kuongezeka, taasisi hii inaangalia uwezekano wa kurejesha matumbawe yaliyoathiriwa kwa kiwango kikubwa wakati huohuo wakitoa ajira kwa Wakulima wa Matumbawe pamoja waendesha boti. Utafiti huu ulichunguza pamoja na kuchambua ushawishi wa kilimo bahari kwa washika dau wa jamii ya Jambiani, kimsingi kwa kuzingatia kilimo cha Spongi na kilimo cha Matumbawe. Kwa kutumia jumuiya ya “Marine Culture” eneo la Kujifunzia, Madhumuni ya msingi yalikuwa ni utafiti kilimo cha mashamba ya spongi pamoja na maisha ya wakulima wa kike, utafiti wa ziada wa kilimo cha Matumbawe na faida kilimo kwa wanajamii. Uchunguzi kwa vitendo na mahojiano ulifanyika ili kuweza kupata data kuhusiana na mashamba yao, Kilimo bahari, na waathirika, Mara nyingi wakulima wa spongi ni wanawake.     Using a global positioning system to measure tidal currents in Absecon Inlet, Atlantic City, NJ

    Journal of Surveying Engineering-Asce, 133(4): pp. 179-183.As a permit requirement for the development of a marina within Absecon Inlet, Atlantic City, NJ, tidal current measurements were required. Maximum ebb and flood currents determine the forces to which the structural elements of the marina will be subjected as well as sediment transport patterns near the marina. Currents also influence the maneuverability of small craft attempting to enter or exit the marina. Consequently, current velocities and directions during maximum ebb and flood tides (spring tides) were measured on 10 March 2005 in the vicinity of the proposed marina using the Global Positioning System (GPS). The location of the proposed marina in the inlet is shown in Figure 1. Current patterns are affected by the presence of Clam Creek (on southwest side of the study area) and the Route 87 Bridge over the inlet. The marina site is also subject to locally generated wind waves as well as waves entering the inlet from the Atlantic Ocean

    Observation of the Askaryan Effect: Coherent Microwave Cherenkov Emission from Charge Asymmetry in High Energy Particle Cascades

    We present the first direct experimental evidence for the charge excess in high energy particle showers predicted nearly 40 years ago by Askaryan. We directed bremsstrahlung photons from picosecond pulses of 28.5 GeV electrons at the SLAC Final Focus Test Beam facility into a 3.5 ton silica sand target, producing electromagnetic showers several meters long. A series of antennas spanning 0.3 to 6 GHz were used to detect strong, sub-nanosecond radio frequency pulses produced whenever a shower was present. The measured electric field strengths are consistent with a completely coherent radiation process. The pulses show 100% linear polarization, consistent with the expectations of Cherenkov radiation. The field strength versus depth closely follows the expected particle number density profile of the cascade, consistent with emission from excess charge distributed along the shower. These measurements therefore provide strong support for experiments designed to detect high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos via coherent radio emission from their cascades.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures.     Effect of a Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Eradicate Central Line Associated Blood-Stream Infections (CLABSI)

    Introduction: CLABSI remains a significant problem in the intensive care unit. Hypothesis: A multimodal approach for the insertion and care of CVC will prevent CLABSI. Methods: A Critical Care Operations Committee was formed to transform care in 8 intensive care units (ICU) in an academic medical center in 9/2004. One goal was to reduce CLABSI. Using evidence based medicine, a clinical practice guideline was developed that incorporated the use of maximum barrier precautions, chlorhexidine skin preparation, avoidance of the femoral insertion site, dedicated catheter cart, a check list, the tracking of high risk CVC, anti-septic or antimicrobial impregnated catheters, a recommendation to use ultrasound guidance when inserting CVC in the internal jugular vein, daily determination of the need for the CVC and treatment of CLABSI as a critical event.CLABSI were adjudicated by the hospital epidemiologist and CVC days were tracked. Rates of CLABSI were followed from 9/2004 through 7/2011. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used for statistical evaluation.     Alpha-synuclein, especially the Parkinson's disease-associated mutants, forms pore-like annular and tubular protofibrils

    Two mutations in the alpha-synuclein gene (A30P and A53T) have been linked to autosomal dominant early-onset Parkinson's disease (PD). Both mutations promote the formation of transient protofibrils (prefibrillar oligomers), suggesting that protofibrils are linked to cytotoxicity. In this work, the effect of these mutations on the structure of alpha-synuclein oligomers was investigated using electron microscopy and digital image processing. The PD-linked mutations (A30P and A53T) were observed to affect both the morphology and the size distribution of alpha-synuclein protofibrils (measured by analytical ultracentrifugation and scanning transmission electron microscopy). The A30P variant was observed to promote the formation of annular, pore-like protofibrils, whereas A53T promotes formation of annular and tubular protofibrillar structures. Wild-type alpha-synuclein also formed annular protofibrils, but only after extended incubation. The formation of pore-like oligomeric structures may explain the membrane permeabilization activity of alpha-synuclein protofibrils. These structures may contribute to the pathogenesis of PD

    Highlights from the Pierre Auger Observatory

    The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory. Our current exposure reaches nearly 40,000 km2^2 str and provides us with an unprecedented quality data set. The performance and stability of the detectors and their enhancements are described. Data analyses have led to a number of major breakthroughs. Among these we discuss the energy spectrum and the searches for large-scale anisotropies. We present analyses of our Xmax_{max} data and show how it can be interpreted in terms of mass composition. We also describe some new analyses that extract mass sensitive parameters from the 100% duty cycle SD data. A coherent interpretation of all these recent results opens new directions.     Prion Protein Is a Key Determinant of Alcohol Sensitivity through the Modulation of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor (NMDAR) Activity

    The prion protein (PrP) is absolutely required for the development of prion diseases; nevertheless, its physiological functions in the central nervous system remain elusive. Using a combination of behavioral, electrophysiological and biochemical approaches in transgenic mouse models, we provide strong evidence for a crucial role of PrP in alcohol sensitivity. Indeed, PrP knock out (PrP−/−) mice presented a greater sensitivity to the sedative effects of EtOH compared to wild-type (wt) control mice. Conversely, compared to wt mice, those over-expressing mouse, human or hamster PrP genes presented a relative insensitivity to ethanol-induced sedation. An acute tolerance (i.e. reversion) to ethanol inhibition of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated excitatory post-synaptic potentials in hippocampal slices developed slower in PrP−/− mice than in wt mice. We show that PrP is required to induce acute tolerance to ethanol by activating a Src-protein tyrosine kinase-dependent intracellular signaling pathway. In an attempt to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying PrP-dependent ethanol effect, we looked for changes in lipid raft features in hippocampus of ethanol-treated wt mice compared to PrP−/− mice. Ethanol induced rapid and transient changes of buoyancy of lipid raft-associated proteins in hippocampus of wt but not PrP−/− mice suggesting a possible mechanistic link for PrP-dependent signal transduction. Together, our results reveal a hitherto unknown physiological role of PrP on the regulation of NMDAR activity and highlight its crucial role in synaptic functions

    Measurement of the cosmic ray spectrum above 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV using inclined events detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory

    A measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum for energies exceeding 4×10184{\times}10^{18} eV is presented, which is based on the analysis of showers with zenith angles greater than 60∘60^{\circ} detected with the Pierre Auger Observatory between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013. The measured spectrum confirms a flux suppression at the highest energies. Above 5.3×10185.3{\times}10^{18} eV, the "ankle", the flux can be described by a power law E−γE^{-\gamma} with index Îł=2.70±0.02 (stat)±0.1 (sys)\gamma=2.70 \pm 0.02 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.1\,\text{(sys)} followed by a smooth suppression region. For the energy (EsE_\text{s}) at which the spectral flux has fallen to one-half of its extrapolated value in the absence of suppression, we find Es=(5.12±0.25 (stat)−1.2+1.0 (sys))×1019E_\text{s}=(5.12\pm0.25\,\text{(stat)}^{+1.0}_{-1.2}\,\text{(sys)}){\times}10^{19} eV.Comment: Replaced with published version.
