Human Papillomavirus Awareness, Vaccine Status, and Risk Factors in Female Emergency Patients
Introduction: A vaccine targeting high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) strains can effectively prevent HPV-associated cervical cancer risk. However, many girls and women do not receive the vaccine, more often those impacted by health disparities associated with race and/or socioeconomic status. This same disparate population has also been shown to be at higher risk for cervical cancer. Many of these women also rely on the emergency department (ED) as a safety net for their healthcare. This study sought to gather information pertaining to HPV and cervical cancer risk factors, awareness of HPV and the vaccine, as well as HPV vaccine uptake in female patients presenting to an ED.Methods: We obtained 81 surveys completed by female ED patients. Demographics included age, race, income, insurance status, primary care provider status, and known cervical-cancer risk factors. Subsequent survey questions explored respondentsâ knowledge, familiarity, and attitudes regarding HPV, cervical cancer, and the HPV vaccine, including vaccination uptake rates. We analyzed data using descriptive statistics and Fisherâs exact test.Results: Approximately one in seven respondents (14.8%) had never previously heard of HPV and 32.1% were unaware of the existence of a HPV vaccine. Minority patients, including those who were Black and Hispanic patients, low income patients, and uninsured and publicly insured patients were less likely to be aware of HPV and the vaccine and likewise were less likely to be offered and receive the vaccine. More than 60% of all respondents (61.3%) had never previously been offered the vaccine, and only 24.7% of all respondents had completed the vaccine series.Conclusion: Female ED patients may represent an at-risk cohort with relatively low HPV awareness and low HPV vaccine uptake. The ED could represent a novel opportunity to access and engage high-risk HPV populations
The Tully-Fisher Relation of Barred Galaxies
We present new data exploring the scaling relations, such as the Tully-Fisher
relation (TFR), of bright barred and unbarred galaxies. A primary motivation
for this study is to establish whether barredness correlates with, and is a
consequence of, virial properties of galaxies. Various lines of evidence
suggest that dark matter is dominant in disks of bright unbarred galaxies at
2.2 disk scale lengths, the point of peak rotation for a pure exponential disk.
We test the hypothesis that the TF plane of barred high surface brightness
galaxies is offset from the mean TFR of unbarred galaxies, as might be expected
if barred galaxies are ``maximal'' in their inner parts. We use existing and
new TF data to search for basic structural differences between barred and
unbarred galaxies. Our new data consist of 2-dimensional Halpha velocity fields
derived from SparsePak integral field spectroscopy (IFS) and V,I-band CCD
images collected at the WIYN Observatory for 14 strongly barred galaxies. We
use WIYN/SparsePak (2-D) velocity fields to show that long-slit (1-D) spectra
yield reliable circular speed measurements at or beyond 2.2 disk scale lengths,
far from any influence of the bar. This enables us to consider line width
measurements from extensive TF surveys which include barred and nonbarred disks
and derive detailed scaling relation comparisons. We find that for a given
luminosity, barred and unbarred galaxies have comparable structural and
dynamical parameters, such as peak velocities, scale lengths, or colors. In
particular, the location of a galaxy in the TF plane is independent of
barredness. In a global dynamical sense, barred and unbarred galaxies behave
similarly and are likely to have, on average, comparable fractions of luminous

Yeast require redox switching in DNA primase
Eukaryotic DNA primases contain a [4Fe4S] cluster in the C-terminal domain of the p58 subunit (p58C) that affects substrate affinity but is not required for catalysis. We show that, in yeast primase, the cluster serves as a DNA-mediated redox switch governing DNA binding, just as in human primase. Despite a different structural arrangement of tyrosines to facilitate electron transfer between the DNA substrate and [4Fe4S] cluster, in yeast, mutation of tyrosines Y395 and Y397 alters the same electron transfer chemistry and redox switch. Mutation of conserved tyrosine 395 diminishes the extent of p58C participation in normal redox-switching reactions, whereas mutation of conserved tyrosine 397 causes oxidative cluster degradation to the [3Fe4S]^+ species during p58C redox signaling. Switching between oxidized and reduced states in the presence of the Y397 mutations thus puts primase [4Fe4S] cluster integrity and function at risk. Consistent with these observations, we find that yeast tolerate mutations to Y395 in p58C, but the single-residue mutation Y397L in p58C is lethal. Our data thus show that a constellation of tyrosines for protein-DNA electron transfer mediates the redox switch in eukaryotic primases and is required for primase function in vivo
External validation of a mammography-derived AI-based risk model in a U.S. breast cancer screening cohort of White and Black women
Despite the demonstrated potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in breast cancer risk assessment for personalizing screening recommendations, further validation is required regarding AI model bias and generalizability. We performed external validation on a U.S. screening cohort of a mammography-derived AI breast cancer risk model originally developed for European screening cohorts. We retrospectively identified 176 breast cancers with exams 3 months to 2 years prior to cancer diagnosis and a random sample of 4963 controls from women with at least one-year negative follow-up. A risk score for each woman was calculated via the AI risk model. Age-adjusted areas under the ROC curves (AUCs) were estimated for the entire cohort and separately for White and Black women. The Gail 5-year risk model was also evaluated for comparison. The overall AUC was 0.68 (95% CIs 0.64-0.72) for all women, 0.67 (0.61-0.72) for White women, and 0.70 (0.65-0.76) for Black women. Introduction:Heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been associated with a higher risk of Alzheimerâs disease (AD). Whether HF and AF are related to AD by enhancing AD neuropathological changes is unknown.
Methods:We applied network analyses and multiple logistic regression models to assess the association between HF and AF with severity of AD neuropathology in patients from the National Alzheimerâs Coordinating Center database with primary neuropathological diagnosis of AD.

World War II is the biggest fact in the Iowa farm situation. Though Iowa is far removed from air bombing and submarine torpedoing, it is on the battle front so far as economic and social effects of the war are concerned. Iowaâs commercial agriculture underwent terrific strain during and following World War I, and the pressures arising out of World War II promise to be similar, although less severe.
It is the purpose of this report to estimate what some of these pressures will be. An understanding of the social and economic forces at work is necessary before plans can be made and action taken to ease the shock of war. The experience of the earlier war helps us to understand these forces, but that experience must be interpreted in light of the changed situation today
