Italy’s fragile new government is unlikely to stay for the long haul.
This week a new Italian government was finally sworn in and approved by Italy’s Parliament, following months of uncertainty after the country’s elections in February. James Walston assesses the new cabinet, noting that it is intentionally dominated by low profile figures to avoid antagonising the main participating parties. He argues that the government will be under immediate political pressure and could be further undermined by Silvio Berlusconi’s on-going legal battles

This genome sequence is the first from the fourth lineage of Frankia, strains of which are unable to reinfect actinorhizal plants. At 10 Mb, it represents the largest Frankia genome sequenced to date

Antibodies to Nipah-Like Virus in Bats (Pteropus lylei), Cambodia
Serum specimens from fruit bats were obtained at restaurants in Cambodia. We detected antibodies cross-reactive to Nipah virus by enzyme immunoassay in 11 (11.5%) of 96 Lyle’s flying foxes (Pteropus lylei). Our study suggests that viruses closely related to Nipah or Hendra viruses are more widespread in Southeast Asia than previously documented
Cavity BPM System Tests for the ILC Spectrometer
The main physics programme of the International Linear Collider (ILC)
requires a measurement of the beam energy at the interaction point with an
accuracy of or better. To achieve this goal a magnetic spectrometer
using high resolution beam position monitors (BPMs) has been proposed. This
paper reports on the cavity BPM system that was deployed to test this proposal.
We demonstrate sub-micron resolution and micron level stability over 20 hours
for a 1\m long BPM triplet. We find micron-level stability over 1 hour for 3
BPM stations distributed over a 30\m long baseline. The understanding of the
behaviour and response of the BPMs gained from this work has allowed full
