    The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope: Instrument and Data Characteristics

    The Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) was flown as part of the Astro observatory on the Space Shuttle Columbia in December 1990 and again on the Space Shuttle Endeavor in March 1995. Ultraviolet (1200-3300 Angstroms) images of a variety of astronomical objects, with a 40 arcmin field of view and a resolution of about 3 arcsec, were recorded on photographic film. The data recorded during the first flight are available to the astronomical community through the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC); the data recorded during the second flight will soon be available as well. This paper discusses in detail the design, operation, data reduction, and calibration of UIT, providing the user of the data with information for understanding and using the data.     An Ultraviolet and Near-Infrared View of NGC 4214: A Starbursting Core Embedded in a Low Surface Brightness Disk

    During the Astro-2 Spacelab mission in 1995 March, the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) obtained far-UV (λ = 1500 A) imagery of the nearby Sm/Im galaxy NGC 4214. The UIT images have a spatial resolution of ~3'' and a limiting surface brightness, ÎŒ1500 > 25 mag arcsec-2, permitting detailed investigation of the intensity and spatial distribution of the young, high-mass stellar component. These data provide the first far-UV imagery covering the full spatial extent of NGC 4214. Comparison with a corresponding I-band image reveals the presence of a starbursting core embedded in an extensive low surface brightness disk. In the far-UV (FUV), NGC 4214 is resolved into several components: a luminous, central knot; an inner region (r 2.5 kpc) with ~15 resolved sources embedded in bright, diffuse emission; and a population of fainter knots extending to the edge of the optically defined disk (r ≈ 5 kpc). The FUV light, which traces recent massive star formation, is observed to be more centrally concentrated than the I-band light, which traces the global stellar population. The FUV radial light profile is remarkably well represented by an R1/4 law, providing evidence that the centrally concentrated massive star formation in NGC 4214 is the result of an interaction, possibly a tidal encounter, with a dwarf companion(s). The brightest FUV source produces ~8% of the global FUV luminosity. This unresolved source, corresponding to the Wolf-Rayet knot described by Sargent & Filippenko, is located at the center of the FUV light distribution, giving NGC 4214 an active galactic nucleus-like morphology. Another strong source is present in the I band, located 19'' west, 10'' north of the central starburst knot, with no FUV counterpart. The I-band source may be the previously unrecognized nucleus of NGC 4214 or an evolved star cluster with an age greater than ~200 Myr. The global star formation rate derived from the total FUV flux is consistent with rates derived using data at other wavelengths and lends support to the scenario of roughly constant star formation during the last few hundred million years at a level significantly enhanced relative to the lifetime averaged star formation rate. The hybrid disk/starburst-irregular morphology evident in NGC 4214 emphasizes the danger of classifying galaxies based on their high surface brightness components at any particular wavelength

    Violence Victimization of Young Men in Heterosexual Relationships: Does Alcohol Outlet Density Influence Outcomes?

    This study examined whether alcohol outlet density is associated with male physical and sexual victimization by a female partner. Data were from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). A total of 3,179 young adult men identified a current heterosexual relationship and had complete intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization data. Almost 16% of this sample reported being the victim of physical only IPV in their relationship over the previous 12 months; an additional 6.4% were victims of sexual only or sexual and physical IPV. Multivariate analyses indicated high alcohol outlet density was associated with greater odds of experiencing physical IPV only (odds ratio [OR] = 2.07). Heavy drinkers experienced increased odds of physical and sexual IPV victimization. Alcohol outlet density should be addressed in prevention efforts

    Alcohol Outlet Density and Young Women’s Perpetration of Violence Toward Male Intimate Partners

    This paper examines the relationships between alcohol outlet density, alcohol use, and perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) among young adult women in the US. Data were from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health; N = 4,430 in present analyses). Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine occurrence of past year IPV perpetration toward a male partner based on tract-level on-premise and off-premise alcohol outlet density, controlling for individuals’ demographic, alcohol use, and childhood abuse characteristics and neighborhood socio-demographic factors. Higher off-premise alcohol outlet density was found to be associated with young women’s perpetration of physical only IPV, controlling for individual-level and ecological factors. Alcohol use had an independent association with IPV perpetration but was not a mediator of the outlet density-IPV relationship. Findings suggest that considering alcohol-related environmental factors may help efforts aimed at preventing young women’s use of physical violence toward partners

    Ultraviolet Signposts of Resonant Dynamics in the Starburst-Ringed Sab Galaxy, M94 (NGC 4736)

    M94 (NGC 4736) is investigated using images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (FUV-band), Hubble Space Telescope (NUV-band), Kitt Peak 0.9-m telescope (H-alpha, R, and I bands), and Palomar 5-m telescope (B-band), along with spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer and Lick 1-m telescopes. The wide-field UIT image shows FUV emission from (a) an elongated nucleus, (b) a diffuse inner disk, where H-alpha is observed in absorption, (c) a bright inner ring of H II regions at the perimeter of the inner disk (R = 48 arcsec. = 1.1 kpc), and (d) two 500-pc size knots of hot stars exterior to the ring on diametrically opposite sides of the nucleus (R= 130 arcsec. = 2.9 kpc). The HST/FOC image resolves the NUV emission from the nuclear region into a bright core and a faint 20 arcsec. long ``mini-bar'' at a position angle of 30 deg. Optical and IUE spectroscopy of the nucleus and diffuse inner disk indicates an approximately 10^7 or 10^8 yr-old stellar population from low-level starbirth activity blended with some LINER activity. Analysis of the H-alpha, FUV, NUV, B, R, and I-band emission along with other observed tracers of stars and gas in M94 indicates that most of the star formation is being orchestrated via ring-bar dynamics involving the nuclear mini-bar, inner ring, oval disk, and outer ring. The inner starburst ring and bi-symmetric knots at intermediate radius, in particular, argue for bar-mediated resonances as the primary drivers of evolution in M94 at the present epoch. Similar processes may be governing the evolution of the ``core-dominated'' galaxies that have been observed at high redshift.     Relationships Among Alcohol Outlet Density, Alcohol use, and Intimate Partner Violence Victimization Among Young Women in the United States

    Greater access to alcohol has been widely found to be associated with many negative outcomes including violence perpetration. This study examines the relationship between alcohol outlet density, alcohol use, and intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization among young women in the United States. A direct association between alcohol outlet density in one’s neighborhood and the likelihood of IPV victimization was examined. Data were from Wave III of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), which followed a nationally representative sample of adolescents into adulthood. Participants were young adult females age 18 to 26 at Wave III. Of the 4,571 female respondents who reported a current heterosexual relationship and had IPV data, 13.2% reported having been the victim of physical violence only and 6.5% experienced sexual only or physical and sexual violence in the relationship during the past year. In the regression models tested, there was no significant direct association between neighborhood alcohol outlet density and IPV victimization nor was there an association between outlet density and drinking behaviors, thus eliminating the possibility of an indirect association. Results of fully adjusted models indicate females who drank heavily, whether infrequently or frequently, were at significant risk for experiencing sexual only IPV or sexual and physical IPV. Asians and Native Americans were at significantly greater odds of experiencing sexual only or sexual and physical IPV compared with non-Hispanic Whites, while non-Hispanic Blacks were at significantly greater odds for physical only IPV. We conclude that a continuous measure of alcohol outlet density was not associated with IPV in models controlling for individual and other neighborhood characteristics. Young women who drink heavily, whether infrequently or frequently, have greater odds of experiencing sexual only or sexual and physical compared to abstainers. Similar to previous study findings, young women living with or married to their partner were at far greater risk of experiencing physical only and/or sexual only or sexual and physical IPV. The study adds to the growing body of literature that examines how community characteristics such as outlet density influence the likelihood of IPV

    Circulating CD34+ Progenitor Cells and Risk of Mortality in a Population with Coronary Artery Disease

    RATIONALE: Low circulating progenitor cell (PC) numbers and activity may reflect impaired intrinsic regenerative/reparative potential, but it remains uncertain whether this translates into a worse prognosis. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether low numbers of PCs associate with a greater risk of mortality in a population at high cardiovascular risk. METHODS & RESULTS: Patients undergoing coronary angiography were recruited into two cohorts (1, n=502 and 2, n=403) over separate time periods. PCs were enumerated by flow cytometry as CD45(med+) blood mononuclear cells expressing CD34, with additional quantification of subsets co-expressing CD133, VEGFR2 and CXCR4. Coefficient of variation for CD34 cells was 2.9% and 4.8%, 21.6% and 6.5% for the respective subsets. Each cohort was followed for a mean of 2.7 and 1.2 years, respectively, for the primary endpoint of all-cause death. There was an inverse association between CD34+ and CD34+/CD133+ cell counts and risk of death in Cohort 1 (ÎČ=−0.92, p=0.043 and ÎČ=−1.64, p=0.019, respectively) that was confirmed in Cohort 2 (ÎČ=−1.25, p=0.020 and ÎČ=−1.81, p=0.015, respectively). Covariate adjusted HRs in the pooled cohort (n=905) were 3.54 (1.67-7.50) and 2.46 (1.18-5.13), respectively. CD34+/CD133+ cell counts improved risk prediction metrics beyond standard risk factors. CONCLUSION: Reduced circulating PC counts, identified primarily as CD34+ mononuclear cells or its subset expressing CD133 are associated with risk of death in individuals with coronary artery disease, suggesting that impaired endogenous regenerative capacity is associated with increased mortality. These findings have implications for biological understanding, risk prediction and cell selection for cell based therapies
