Higgs-free confinement hierarchy in five colour QCD
I consider the monopole condensate of five color QCD. The naive lowest energy
state is unobtainable at one-loop for five or more colors due to simple
geometric considerations. The consequent adjustment of the vacuum condensate
generates a hierarchy of confinement scales in a natural Higgs-free manner. The
accompanying symmetry hierarchy contains hints of standard model phenomenology.Comment: 9 pages, PTP class file, discussion at bottom of page 5 correcte
Extending SU(2) to SU(N) QCD
Abelian dominance is used to reformulate the QCD Lagrangian as a sum over the
roots of Lie group representation theory. This greatly facilitates extending
the SU(2) magnetic ground state energy spectrum, several arguments for the
stability of the magnetic ground state, and the Faddeev-Skyrme model to
arbitrary SU(N) QCD.Comment: 12 pages, errors correcte
Impact of a Science Methods Course on Pre-Service Elementary Teachers\u27 Knowledge and Confidence of Teaching with Scientific Inquiry and Problem-Based Learning
The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of an elementary science methods course on pre-service teachers\u27 knowledge and confidence of teaching with inquiry and problem-based instructional strategies. Changes in pre-service teachers\u27 knowledge and confidence were measured before and after completing the course activities using a pilot survey entitled Science Pedagogical Content Knowledge & Confidence (PCKC) Survey. An integrated lecture/laboratory elementary science methods course engaged participants with hands-on activities designed to increase their pedagogical content knowledge: including theory, planning and implementation of inquiry, and problem-based learning. The results indicated that pre-service teachers\u27 knowledge and confidence improved as a result of enrollment in the elementary science methods course. This article validates reform movements to incorporate scientific inquiry and problem-based learning into coursework
Protective telescoping shield for solar concentrator
An apparatus is described for use with a solar concentrator such as a parabolic dish which concentrates sunlight onto a small opening of a solar receiver, for protecting the receiver in the event of a system failure that could cause concentrated sunlight to damage the receiver. The protective apparatus includes a structure which can be moved to a stowed position where it does not block sunlight, to a deployed position. In this position, the structure forms a tube which substantially completely surrounds an axis connecting the receiver opening to the center of the concentrator at locations between the receiver and the concentrator
Photoproduction of K^+ Mesons in Hydrogen
The photoproduction of K^+ mesons in hydrogen has been measured with the purpose of extending the previous CalTech measurements to smaller angles, and obtaining better absolute values for the cross sections. The technique of Donoho and Walker, using a magnetic spectrometer and a time-of-flight measurement to detect the K^+ mesons, was modified so as to achieve a better discrimination against pions and scattered protons. The results obtained are in fairly good agreement with the more extensive measurements made at Cornell by a somewhat different method
