Flight of the dragonflies and damselflies
This work is a synthesis of our current understanding of the mechanics, aerodynamics and visually mediated control of dragonfly and damselfly flight, with the addition of new experimental and computational data in several key areas. These are: the diversity of dragonfly wing morphologies, the aerodynamics of gliding flight, force generation in flapping flight, aerodynamic efficiency, comparative flight performance and pursuit strategies during predatory and territorial flights. New data are set in context by brief reviews covering anatomy at several scales, insect aerodynamics, neuromechanics and behaviour. We achieve a new perspective by means of a diverse range of techniques, including laser-line mapping of wing topographies, computational fluid dynamics simulations of finely detailed wing geometries, quantitative imaging using particle image velocimetry of on-wing and wake flow patterns, classical aerodynamic theory, photography in the field, infrared motion capture and multi-camera optical tracking of free flight trajectories in laboratory environments. Our comprehensive approach enables a novel synthesis of datasets and subfields that integrates many aspects of flight from the neurobiology of the compound eye, through the aeromechanical interface with the surrounding fluid, to flight performance under cruising and higher-energy behavioural modes
Suppression of properties associated with malignancy in murine melanoma-melanocyte hybrid cells.
Murine and human melanoma cells differ relatively reliably from non-tumorigenic melanocytes in certain biological properties. When cultured at low pH, melanocytes tend to be pigmented and melanoma cells unpigmented. The growth of virtually all metastatic melanoma cells is inhibited by phorbol esters such as TPA (12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate), which stimulate melanocyte growth. Melanocytes fail to grow in suspension culture or produce tumours when implanted in animals, while many melanoma lines can do both. Here we studied which of these properties were dominant in hybrid cells formed by fusion of drug-resistant murine B16-F10RR melanoma cells to melanocytes of the albino and brown lines, melan-c and melan-b. The albino melanocytes are unpigmented but well-differentiated, the brown melanocytes produce pale brown pigment and the melanoma cells are unpigmented under the conditions used. All hybrid colonies observed produced black pigment, except some melan-b/melanoma hybrids when growing sparsely with TPA. Thus pigmentation was generally dominant. 14/15 hybrid lines showed stimulation of proliferation by TPA, as do melanocytes. Most hybrid lines showed no or reduced capacity for growth in suspension, though some grew better in suspension when TPA was present. There was marked suppression of the tumorigenicity of the parental melanoma cells in 4/8 hybrids examined, and tumorigenicity was reduced in the others, despite considerable chromosome loss by the passage level tested. Thus most properties of the non-tumorigenic pigment cells were dominant, as often observed for other cell lineages, and providing further evidence for gene loss in the genesis of malignant melanoma

Recruitment of faster motor units is associated with greater rates of fascicle strain and rapid changes in muscle force during locomotion
Animals modulate the power output needed for different locomotor tasks through changes in muscle force production and fascicle strain rate. To generate sufficient force, appropriate motor unit recruitment must occur. Given that faster motor units contract with faster strain rates and have faster activation-deactivation rates, it is therefore likely that faster motor units are recruited for more rapid movements. The goals of this study were to 1) describe changes in motor unit recruitment patterns that occur with changes in locomotor dynamics and 2) test whether motor unit recruitment can be directly related to in vivo measures of muscle force and fascicle strain and strain rate, and thus mechanical work. Myoelectric, sonomicrometric, and muscle-tendon force data were collected from the lateral and medial gastrocnemius muscles of the goat hind limb during level and incline walking and trotting, and level galloping. Myoelectric signals were analyzed using wavelet and principal component analysis in order to quantify changes to the myoelectric frequency spectra across locomotor conditions. Fascicle strain and strain rate were calculated from the sonomicrometric data, and force rate was calculated from the tendon force data. The results of this study demonstrate that, under certain locomotor conditions such as level galloping and incline walking, where EMG activity were similar but had different frequency components, faster and slower motor units are recruited in patterns that were task-specific. The study also shows that the recruitment patterns of different motor unit types are related to in vivo fascicle strain rates in addition to myoelectric intensity and force. Together, these data provide evidence that changes in motor unit recruitment have an underlying mechanical basis, at least for certain locomotor tasks.Organismic and Evolutionary Biolog
Solving the apparent diversity-accuracy dilemma of recommender systems
Recommender systems use data on past user preferences to predict possible
future likes and interests. A key challenge is that while the most useful
individual recommendations are to be found among diverse niche objects, the
most reliably accurate results are obtained by methods that recommend objects
based on user or object similarity. In this paper we introduce a new algorithm
specifically to address the challenge of diversity and show how it can be used
to resolve this apparent dilemma when combined in an elegant hybrid with an
accuracy-focused algorithm. By tuning the hybrid appropriately we are able to
obtain, without relying on any semantic or context-specific information,

Comparison of human gastrocnemius forces predicted by Hill-type muscle models and estimated from ultrasound images
Hill-type models are ubiquitous in the field of biomechanics, providing estimates of a muscle's force as a function of its activation state and its assumed force–length and force–velocity properties. However, despite their routine use, the accuracy with which Hill-type models predict the forces generated by muscles during submaximal, dynamic tasks remains largely unknown. This study compared human gastrocnemius forces predicted by Hill-type models with the forces estimated from ultrasound-based measures of tendon length changes and stiffness during cycling, over a range of loads and cadences. We tested both a traditional model, with one contractile element, and a differential model, with two contractile elements that accounted for independent contributions of slow and fast muscle fibres. Both models were driven by subject-specific, ultrasound-based measures of fascicle lengths, velocities and pennation angles and by activation patterns of slow and fast muscle fibres derived from surface electromyographic recordings. The models predicted, on average, 54% of the time-varying gastrocnemius forces estimated from the ultrasound-based methods. However, differences between predicted and estimated forces were smaller under low speed–high activation conditions, with models able to predict nearly 80% of the gastrocnemius force over a complete pedal cycle. Additionally, the predictions from the Hill-type muscle models tested here showed that a similar pattern of force production could be achieved for most conditions with and without accounting for the independent contributions of different muscle fibre types.Organismic and Evolutionary Biolog

The effect of fast and slow motor unit activation on whole-muscle mechanical performance: the size principle may not pose a mechanical paradox
The output of skeletal muscle can be varied by selectively recruiting different motor units. However, our knowledge of muscle function is largely derived from muscle in which all motor units are activated. This discrepancy may limit our understanding of in vivo muscle function. Hence, this study aimed to characterize the mechanical properties of muscle with different motor unit activation. We determined the isometric properties and isotonic force–velocity relationship of rat plantaris muscles in situ with all of the muscle active, 30% of the muscle containing predominately slower motor units active or 20% of the muscle containing predominately faster motor units active. There was a significant effect of active motor unit type on isometric force rise time (p < 0.001) and the force–velocity relationship (p < 0.001). Surprisingly, force rise time was longer and maximum shortening velocity higher when all motor units were active than when either fast or slow motor units were selectively activated. We propose this is due to the greater relative effects of factors such as series compliance and muscle resistance to shortening during sub-maximal contractions. The findings presented here suggest that recruitment according to the size principle, where slow motor units are activated first and faster ones recruited as demand increases, may not pose a mechanical paradox, as has been previously suggested.Organismic and Evolutionary Biolog
Attitude to the study of chemistry and its relationship with achievement in an introductory undergraduate course
A positive attitude to a subject may be congruent with higher achievement; however, limited evidence supports this for students in undergraduate chemistry – this may result from difficulties in quantifying attitude. Therefore, in this study, the Attitude to the Study of Chemistry Inventory (ASCI) – a validated instrument to quantify attitude, was used to measure attitude to chemistry in 125 undergraduates s udying an introductory course in chemistry, as part of a BSc Chemistry major. The 13 week course contained 4 summative assessments: practical (PRAC), tutorial (TUT), on-line web-based learning (OWL), and a final exam (FE). Sub-scales within ASCI which quantify the
‘affective’ and ‘cognitive’ components of attitude were determined. Firstly, for all 125 students, weak correlations (r) between the affective scale score and FE
(r=0.275, P<0.01) and TOTAL (r=0.228, P<0.05), were recorded. Secondly, a low achieving (LA, n=48) and a high achieving (HA, n=77) group were identified using a cluster analysis procedure. The HA group scored higher than the LA
group in PRAC, OWL, FE and TOTAL (all P<0.001), but the clusters were not different in their scores for either the affective or the cognitive components of attitude. There was no correlation between attitude and achievement in the HA group, and only one weak positive correlation (0.409), between the affective score and achievement in the LA group. We suggest that although a positive attitude may be an important part of the undergraduate experience, it is at best only weakly associated with achievement in undergraduate chemistry
The effect of discrete vs. continuous-valued ratings on reputation and ranking systems
When users rate objects, a sophisticated algorithm that takes into account
ability or reputation may produce a fairer or more accurate aggregation of
ratings than the straightforward arithmetic average. Recently a number of
authors have proposed different co-determination algorithms where estimates of
user and object reputation are refined iteratively together, permitting
accurate measures of both to be derived directly from the rating data. However,
simulations demonstrating these methods' efficacy assumed a continuum of rating
values, consistent with typical physical modelling practice, whereas in most
actual rating systems only a limited range of discrete values (such as a 5-star
system) is employed. We perform a comparative test of several co-determination
algorithms with different scales of discrete ratings and show that this
seemingly minor modification in fact has a significant impact on algorithms'
performance. Paradoxically, where rating resolution is low, increased noise in
users' ratings may even improve the overall performance of the system.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
