    Information, Trading and Stock Returns: Lessons from Dually-Listed Securities

    This paper compares the intra-day patterns on the NYSE and AMEX of volatility, trading volume and bid-ask spreads for European dually- listed stocks, Japanese dually-listed stocks also listed in London, and Japanese dually-listed stocks not listed in London with American stocks of comparable average trading volume and volatility. It is shown that the intra-day patterns for these stocks are remarkably similar even though the public information flows differ markedly across these stocks during the trading day. In the morning, Japanese stocks have the greatest volatility and volume, followed by European stocks and American stocks. These rankings are reversed in the afternoon. We argue that these patterns are consistent with markets reacting to the overnight accumulation of public information which is greatest for Japanese stock and smallest for American stocks and inconsistent with the view that early morning volatility can be attributed to monopolistic specialist behavior.

    Digital Marketing- A Study on Internet Advertising, SMS Advertising and Blog with emphasis on Alcohol Brands in Malaysia

    The dynamic evolution of technologies offers boundless opportunities for marketing communication, especially for alcohol brands in Malaysia which are in the “semi-dark market” environment and are restricted from mass advertising, the introduction of digital marketing certainly gave rise to a new ray of hope. The aim of this study is to examine the consumers’ response toward the three marketing communication choices i.e. Internet ad, SMS ad and blog and recommend the method to capitalise on these tools effectively. Among many methods for examining the effectiveness of digital marketing, a model of successful digital marketing advertising was adapted from Scharl et al (2005). A questionnaire was developed and to which a total of 179 respondents from Klang Valley participated in the survey. A statistical software application named SPSS version 15 was used to analyse the data collected. An interview was also conducted with a popular blogger in Malaysia. The result of the empirical study showed that each of the three digital marketing communication tools has its own individual strengths and weaknesses. Having combined the literature reviews and the research result, this study presents the factors that contribute to the success of a marketing campaign. In conclusion, each individual digital marketing choice should not be a “stand alone” tool. To maximise their capabilities, all three choices are to be combined and complement each other. To ensure an effective and successful marketing campaign, a strategy on integration of both traditional and digital marketing communication choices is recommended

    Insights of biosurfactant producing Serratia marcescens strain W2.3 isolated from diseased tilapia fish: a draft genome analysis

    Background Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen with broad range of host ranging from vertebrates, invertebrates and plants. S. marcescens strain W2.3 was isolated from a diseased tilapia fish and it was suspected to be the causal agent for the fish disease as virulence genes were found within its genome. In this study, for the first time, the genome sequences of S. marcescens strain W2.3 were sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Result Several virulent factors of S. marcescens such as serrawettin, a biosurfactant, has been reported to be regulated by N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-based quorum sensing (QS). In our previous studies, an unusual AHL with long acyl side chain was detected from this isolate suggesting the possibility of novel virulence factors regulation. This evokes our interest in the genome of this bacterial strain and hereby we present the draft genome of S. marcescens W2.3, which carries the serrawettin production gene, swrA and the AHL-based QS transcriptional regulator gene, luxR which is an orphan luxR. Conclusion With the availability of the whole genome sequences of S. marcescens W2.3, this will pave the way for the study of the QS-mediated genes expression in this bacterium

    Review of ankle inversion sprain simulators in the biomechanics laboratory

    Ankle inversion ligamentous sprain is one of the most common sports injuries. The most direct way is to investigate real injury incidents, but it is unethical and impossible to replicate on test participants. Simulators including tilt platforms, trapdoors, and fulcrum devices were designed to mimic ankle inversion movements in laboratories. Inversion angle was the only element considered in early designs; however, an ankle sprain is composed of inversion and plantarflexion in clinical observations. Inversion velocity is another parameter that increased the reality of simulation. This review summarised the simulators, and aimed to compare and contrast their features and settings

    A COMPUTATIONAL BIOMECHANICS STUDY TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF MYOELECTRIC STIMULATION ON PERONEAL MUSCLES IN PREVENTING INVERSION-TYPE ANKLE LIGAMENTOUS SPRAIN INJURY

    A three-dimensional multi-body lower limb model with 16 bones and 22 ligaments was developed to study ankle ligamentous inversion sprain. A male athlete who was diagnosed with a grade I anterior talofibular ligament (ATaFL) sprain during an accidental injury in laboratory in a published report. His ankle kinematics injury data profile was computed. The effect of delivering myoelectric stimulation on peroneal muscles was simulated as torques during ankle inversion. Largest strain in the ATaFL was 8.3%, 9.0% and 11.4%, respectively, at different inversion velocity thresholds of 300 deg/s, 400 deg/s and 500 deg/s. A ligament strain/sprain more than 10-15% would lead to a ligament tear suggesting that applied muscle moments could successfully prevent ankle inversion sprain when an injury identification threshold does not reach 400 deg/s

    A PILOT STUDY OF MASTERY OF FUNDAMENTAL MOTOR SKILLS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN HONG KONG

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current proficiency level of fundamental motor skills among primary students in Hong Kong. Three male and three female grade three students participated in this pilot study. The Test of Gross Motor Development Second Edition (TGMD-2) was employed. Four out of six students displayed an average mastery of the overall fundamental motor skills while two were rated as below average in their proficiency. The performance of the Locomotor subtests outweighed the performance of the Object Control subtests. Further studies with larger sample size and with subjects in different age groups will be conducted in order to have a better understanding of the mastery level of the whole school students and to suggest and implement appropriate intervention programs to improve their fundamental motor skills

    Unravelling the genome of long chain N-acylhomoserine lactone-producing Acinetobacter sp. strain GG2 and identification of its quorum sensing synthase gene

    Myriad proteobacteria use N-acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) molecules as quorum-sensing (QS) signals to regulate different physiological functions, including virulence, antibiotic production and biofilm formation. Many of these proteobacteria possess LuxI/LuxR system as the QS mechanism. Recently, we reported the 3.89 Mb genome of Acinetobacter sp. strain GG2. In this work, the genome of this long chain AHL-producing bacterium was unravelled which led to the molecular characterization of luxI homlogue, designated as aciI. This 552 bp gene was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). The purified protein was approximately 20.5 kDa and is highly similar to several autoinducer proteins of LuxI family among Acinetobacter species. To verify the AHL synthesis activity of this protein, high resolution liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed the production of 3-oxo-dodecanoyl homoserine lactone and 3-hydroxy dodecanoyl homoserine lactone from induced E.coli harboring the recombinant AciI. Our data show for the first time, the cloning and characterization of the luxI homologue from Acinetobacter sp. strain GG2, and confirmation of its AHLs production. These data are of great significance as the annotated genome of strain GG2 has provided a valuable insight in the study of autoinducer molecules and its roles in QS mechanism of the bacterium
