The Inverse Born Approximation: Exact Determination of Shape of Convex Voids
The Inverse Born Approximation (IBA) to the elastic wave inverse scattering problem is known to give highly accurate results for the shape of complex voids. In this paper we present an argument demonstrating that the IBA is, in fact, exact for determining the size, shape and orientation of a wide class of these scatterers given infinite bandwidth and unlimited aperture information. Essentially, our argument demonstrates how the IBA algorithm picks out the singular contribution to the impulse response function and correctly relates it to the shape of the scatterer. Some specific examples will be used to illustrate the more intuitive aspects of the discussion
Medication prescribing quality in Australian primary care patients with chronic kidney disease
Background: Australian patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are routinely managed in general practices with multiple medications. However, no nationally representative study has evaluated the quality of prescribing in these patients. The objective of this study was to examine the quality of prescribing in patients with CKD using nationally representative primary care data obtained from the NPS MedicineWise's dataset, MedicineInsight. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of general practice data for patients aged 18 years or older with CKD was performed from 1 February 2016 to 1 June 2016. The study examined the proportion of patients with CKD who met a set of 16 published indicators in two categories: (1) potentially appropriate prescribing of antihypertensives, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors, phosphate binders, and statins; and (2) potentially inappropriate prescribing of nephrotoxic medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), at least two RAS inhibitors, triple therapy (an NSAID, a RAS inhibitor and a diuretic), high-dose digoxin, and metformin. The proportion of patients meeting each quality indicator was stratified using clinical and demographic characteristics. Results: A total of 44,259 patients (24,165 (54.6%) female; 25,562 (57.8%) estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) 45-59 mL/1.73 m2) with CKD stages 3-5 were included. Nearly one-third of patients had diabetes and were more likely to have their blood pressure and albumin-to-creatinine ratio monitored than those without diabetes. Potentially appropriate prescribing of antihypertensives was achieved in 79.9% of hypertensive patients with CKD stages 4-5. The prescribing indicators for RAS inhibitors in patients with microalbuminuria and diabetes and in patients with macroalbuminuria were achieved in 69.9% and 62.3% of patients, respectively. Only 40.8% of patients with CKD and aged between 50 and 65 years were prescribed statin therapy. The prescribing of a RAS inhibitor plus a diuretic was less commonly achieved, with the indicator met in 20.6% for patients with microalbuminuria and diabetes and 20.4% for patients with macroalbuminuria. Potentially inappropriate prescribing of NSAIDs, metformin, and at least two RAS inhibitors were apparent in 14.3%, 14.1%, and 7.6%, respectively. Potentially inappropriate prescribing tended to be more likely in patients aged ≥65 years, living in regional or remote areas, or with socio-economic indexes for areas (SEIFA) score ≤ 3. Conclusions: We identified areas for possible improvement in the prescribing of RAS inhibitors and statins, as well as deprescribing of NSAIDs and metformin in Australian general practice patients with CKD

The LSST DESC data challenge 1: Generation and analysis of synthetic images for next-generation surveys
Data Challenge 1 (DC1) is the first synthetic data set produced by the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC). DC1 is designed to develop and validate data reduction and analysis and to study the impact of systematic effects that will affect the LSST data set. DC1 is comprised of r-band observations of 40 deg2 to 10 yr LSST depth. We present each stage of the simulation and analysis process: (a) generation, by synthesizing sources from cosmological N-body simulations in individual sensor-visit images with different observing conditions; (b) reduction using a development version of the LSST Science Pipelines; and (c) matching to the input cosmological catalogue for validation and testing. We verify that testable LSST requirements pass within the fidelity of DC1. We establish a selection procedure that produces a sufficiently clean extragalactic sample for clustering analyses and we discuss residual sample contamination, including contributions from inefficiency in star-galaxy separation and imperfect deblending. We compute the galaxy power spectrum on the simulated field and conclude that: (i) survey properties have an impact of 50 per cent of the statistical uncertainty for the scales and models used in DC1; (ii) a selection to eliminate artefacts in the catalogues is necessary to avoid biases in the measured clustering; and (iii) the presence of bright objects has a significant impact (2-6) in the estimated power spectra at small scales (> 1200), highlighting the impact of blending in studies at small angular scales in LSST
On the Generalizability of Experimental Results
The age-old question of the generalizability of the results of experiments that are conducted in artificial laboratory settings to more realistic inferential and decision making situations is considered in this paper. Conservatism in probability revision provides an example of a result that 1) has received wide attention, including attention in terms of implications for real-world decision making, on the basis of experiments conducted in artificial settings and 2) is now apparently thought by many to be highly situational and not at all a ubiquitous phenomenon, in which case its implications for real-world decision making are not as extensive as originally claimed. In this paper we consider the questions of generalizations from the laboratory to the real world in some detail, both within the context of the experiments regarding conservatism and within a more general context. In addition, we discuss some of the difficulties inherent in experimentation in realistic settings, suggest possible procedures for avoiding or at least alleviating such difficulties, and make a plea for more realistic experiments
A Tale of Four “Carp”: Invasion Potential and Ecological Niche Modeling
. We assessed the geographic potential of four Eurasian cyprinid fishes (common carp, tench, grass carp, black carp) as invaders in North America via ecological niche modeling (ENM). These “carp” represent four stages of invasion of the continent (a long-established invader with a wide distribution, a long-established invader with a limited distribution, a spreading invader whose distribution is expanding, and a newly introduced potential invader that is not yet established), and as such illustrate the progressive reduction of distributional disequilibrium over the history of species' invasions.We used ENM to estimate the potential distributional area for each species in North America using models based on native range distribution data. Environmental data layers for native and introduced ranges were imported from state, national, and international climate and environmental databases. Models were evaluated using independent validation data on native and invaded areas. We calculated omission error for the independent validation data for each species: all native range tests were highly successful (all omission values <7%); invaded-range predictions were predictive for common and grass carp (omission values 8.8 and 19.8%, respectively). Model omission was high for introduced tench populations (54.7%), but the model correctly identified some areas where the species has been successful; distributional predictions for black carp show that large portions of eastern North America are at risk.ENMs predicted potential ranges of carp species accurately even in regions where the species have not been present until recently. ENM can forecast species' potential geographic ranges with reasonable precision and within the short screening time required by proposed U.S. invasive species legislation
Response of Coastal Fishes to the Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster
The ecosystem-level impacts of the Deepwater Horizon disaster have been largely unpredictable due to the unique setting and magnitude of this spill. We used a five-year (2006–2010) data set within the oil-affected region to explore acute consequences for early-stage survival of fish species inhabiting seagrass nursery habitat. Although many of these species spawned during spring-summer, and produced larvae vulnerable to oil-polluted water, overall and species-by-species catch rates were high in 2010 after the spill (1,989±220 fishes km-towed−1 [μ ± 1SE]) relative to the previous four years (1,080±43 fishes km-towed−1). Also, several exploited species were characterized by notably higher juvenile catch rates during 2010 following large-scale fisheries closures in the northern Gulf, although overall statistical results for the effects of fishery closures on assemblage-wide CPUE data were ambiguous. We conclude that immediate, catastrophic losses of 2010 cohorts were largely avoided, and that no shifts in species composition occurred following the spill. The potential long-term impacts facing fishes as a result of chronic exposure and delayed, indirect effects now require attention

for higher multipole admixtures in electric-dipole-dominated radiative
transitions in charmonia. We find good agreement between our data and
theoretical predictions for magnetic quadrupole (M2) amplitudes in the

Using data recorded by CLEO-c detector at CESR, we search for simultaneous
baryon and lepton number violating decays of the D^0 meson, specifically, D^0
--> p-bar e^+, D^0-bar --> p-bar e^+, D^0 --> p e^- and D^0-bar --> p e^-. We
set the following branching fraction upper limits: D^0 --> p-bar e^+ (D^0-bar
