Religiousness and preoperative anxiety: a correlational study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Major life changes are among factors that cause anxiety, and one of these changes is surgery. Emotional reactions to surgery have specific effects on the intensity and velocity as well as the process of physical disease. In addition, they can cause delay in patients recovery. This study is aimed at determining the relationship between religious beliefs and preoperative anxiety.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This survey is a correlational study to assess the relationship between religious beliefs and preoperative anxiety of patients undergoing abdominal, orthopaedic, and gynaecologic surgery in educational hospitals. We used the convenience sampling method. The data collection instruments included a questionnaire containing the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and another questionnaire formulated by the researcher with queries on religious beliefs and demographic characteristics as well as disease-related information. Analysis of the data was carried out with SPSS software using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results were arranged in three tables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The findings showed that almost all the subjects had high level of religiosity and moderate level of anxiety. In addition, there was an inverse relationship between religiosity and intensity of anxiety, though this was not statistically significant.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of this study can be used as evidence for presenting religious counselling and spiritual interventions for individuals undergoing stress. Finally, based on the results of this study, the researcher suggested some recommendations for applying results and conducting further research.</p
Quantum-Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanodot Hole Transport and Electronic Energy Transfer Layer
Electroluminescence efficiency is crucial for the application of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) in practical devices. We demonstrate that nitrogen-doped carbon nanodot (N-CD) interlayer improves electrical and luminescent properties of QD-LEDs. The N-CDs were prepared by solution-based bottom up synthesis and were inserted as a hole transport layer (HTL) between other multilayer HTL heterojunction and the red-QD layer. The QD-LEDs with N-CD interlayer represented superior electrical rectification and electroluminescent efficiency than those without the N-CD interlayer. The insertion of N-CD layer was found to provoke the Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from N-CD to QD layer, as confirmed by time-integrated and - resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Moreover, hole-only devices (HODs) with N-CD interlayer presented high hole transport capability, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy also revealed that the N-CD interlayer reduced the highest hole barrier height. Thus, more balanced carrier injection with sufficient hole carrier transport feasibly lead to the superior electrical and electroluminescent properties of the QD-LEDs with N-CD interlayer. We further studied effect of N-CD interlayer thickness on electrical and luminescent performances for high-brightness QD-LEDs. The ability of the N-CD interlayer to improve both the electrical and luminescent characteristics of the QD-LEDs would be readily exploited as an emerging photoactive material for high-efficiency optoelectronic devices.ope
Proteomic-based identification of haptoglobin-1 precursor as a novel circulating biomarker of ovarian cancer
Screening for specific biomarkers of early-stage detection of ovarian cancer is a major health priority due to the asymptomatic nature and poor survival characteristic of the disease. We utilised two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) to identify differentially expressed proteins in the serum of ovarian cancer patients that may be useful as biomarkers of this disease. In this study, 38 ovarian cancer patients at different pathological grades (grade 1 (n=6), grade 2 (n=8) and grade 3 (n=24)) were compared to a control group of eight healthy women. Serum samples were treated with a mixture of Affigel-Blue and protein A (5 : 1) for 1 h to remove high abundance protein (e.g. immunoglobulin and albumin) and were displayed using 11 cm, pH 4-7 isoelectric focusing strips for the first dimension and 10% acrylamide gel electrophoresis for the second dimension. Protein spots were visualised by SYPRO-Ruby staining, imaged by FX-imager and compared and analysed by PDQuest software. A total of 24 serum proteins were differentially expressed in grade 1 (P<0.05), 31 in grade 2 (P<0.05) and 25 in grade 3 (P<0.05) ovarian cancer patients. Six of the protein spots that were significantly upregulated in all groups of ovarian cancer patients were identified by nano-electrospray quadrupole quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (n-ESIQ(q)TOFMS) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) as isoforms of haptoglobin-1 precursor (HAP1), a liver glycoprotein present in human serum. Further identification of the spots at different pathological grades was confirmed by Western blotting using monoclonal antibody against a haptoglobin epitope contained within HAP1. Immunohistochemical localisation of HAP1-like activity was present in malignant ovarian epithelium and stroma but strong immunostaining was present in blood vessels, areas with myxomatous stroma and vascular spaces. No tissue localisation of HAP1-like immunoreactivity was observed in normal ovarian surface epithelium. These data highlight the need to assess circulating concentration of HAP1 in the serum of ovarian cancer patients and evaluate its potential as a biomarker in the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.N Ahmed, G Barker, KT Oliva, P Hoffmann, C Riley, S Reeve, AI Smith, BE Kemp, MA Quinn and GE Ric
Observation of an Exotic Baryon in Exclusive Photoproduction from the Deuteron
In an exclusive measurement of the reaction , a
narrow peak that can be attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness
is seen in the invariant mass spectrum. The peak is at
GeV/c with a measured width of 0.021 GeV/c FWHM, which is largely
determined by experimental mass resolution. The statistical significance of the
peak is . The mass and width of the observed peak are
consistent with recent reports of a narrow baryon by other experimental
groups.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Measurement of Beam-Spin Asymmetries for Deep Inelastic Electroproduction
We report the first evidence for a non-zero beam-spin azimuthal asymmetry in
the electroproduction of positive pions in the deep-inelastic region. Data have
been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 4.3 GeV with the CLAS detector
at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The amplitude of
the modulation increases with the momentum of the pion relative to
the virtual photon, , with an average amplitude of for range.Comment: 5 pages, RevTEX4, 3 figures, 2 table
Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function for in the Resonance Region
The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function
has been measured in the resonance region at and 0.65
GeV. Data for the reaction were taken at Jefferson Lab
with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally
polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. For the first time a complete
angular distribution was measured, permitting the separation of different
non-resonant amplitudes using a partial wave analysis. Comparison with previous
beam asymmetry measurements at MAMI indicate a deviation from the predicted
dependence of using recent phenomenological
models.Comment: 5 pages, LaTex, 4 eps figures: to be published in PRC/Rapid

Two-Nucleon Momentum Distributions Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n
We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at 2.2 GeV over a wide kinematic
range. The kinetic energy distribution for `fast' nucleons (p > 250 MeV/c)
peaks where two nucleons each have 20% or less, and the third nucleon has most
of the transferred energy. These fast pp and pn pairs are back-to-back with
little momentum along the three-momentum transfer, indicating that they are
spectators. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that we have
measured distorted two-nucleon momentum distributions by striking the third
nucleon and detecting the spectator correlated pair.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Survey of A_LT' asymmetries in semi-exclusive electron scattering on He4 and C12
Single spin azimuthal asymmetries A_LT' were measured at Jefferson Lab using
2.2 and 4.4 GeV longitudinally polarized electrons incident on He4 and C12
targets in the CLAS detector. A_LT' is related to the imaginary part of the
longitudinal-transverse interference and in quasifree nucleon knockout it
provides an unambiguous signature for final state interactions (FSI).
Experimental values of A_LT' were found to be below 5%, typically |A_LT'| < 3%
for data with good statistical precision. Optical Model in Eikonal
Approximation (OMEA) and Relativistic Multiple-Scattering Glauber Approximation
(RMSGA) calculations are shown to be consistent with the measured asymmetries.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Onset of asymptotic scaling in deuteron photodisintegration
We investigate the transition from the nucleon-meson to quark-gluon
description of the strong interaction using the photon energy dependence of the
differential cross section for photon energies above 0.5 GeV and
center-of-mass proton angles between and . A possible
signature for this transition is the onset of cross section scaling
with the total energy squared, , at some proton transverse momentum, .
The results show that the scaling has been reached for proton transverse
momentum above about 1.1 GeV/c. This may indicate that the quark-gluon regime
is reached above this momentum.Comment: Accepted by PRL; 5 pages, 2 figure
First Measurement of Transferred Polarization in the Exclusive e p --> e' K+ Lambda Reaction
The first measurements of the transferred polarization for the exclusive ep
--> e'K+ Lambda reaction have been performed in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson
National Accelerator Facility using the CLAS spectrometer. A 2.567 GeV electron
beam was used to measure the hyperon polarization over a range of Q2 from 0.3
to 1.5 (GeV/c)2, W from 1.6 to 2.15 GeV, and over the full center-of-mass
angular range of the K+ meson. Comparison with predictions of hadrodynamic
models indicates strong sensitivity to the underlying resonance contributions.
A non-relativistic quark model interpretation of our data suggests that the
s-sbar quark pair is produced with spins predominantly anti-aligned.
Implications for the validity of the widely used 3P0 quark-pair creation
operator are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
