Spin-1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chains in an External Staggered Field
We present in this paper a nonlinear sigma-model analysis of a spin-1
antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered
magnetic field. After rediscussing briefly and extending previous results for
the staggered magnetization curve, the core of the paper is a novel
calculation, at the tree level, of the Green functions of the model. We obtain
precise results for the elementary excitation spectrum and in particular for
the spin gaps in the transverse and longitudinal channels. It is shown that,
while the spectral weight in the transverse channel is exhausted by a single
magnon pole, in the longitudinal one, besides a magnon pole a two-magnon
continuum appears as well whose weight is a stedily increasing function of the
applied field, while the weight of the magnon decreases correspondingly. The
balance between the two is governed by a sum rule that is derived and
discussed. A detailed comparison with the present experimental and numerical
(DMRG) status of the art as well as with previous analytical approaches is also
made.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures, LaTe
Sentiment analysis and the impact of employee satisfaction on firm earnings
Prior text mining studies of corporate reputational sentiment based on newswires, blogs and Twitter feeds have mostly captured reputation from the perspective of two groups of stakeholders – the media and consumers. In this study we examine the sentiment of a potentially overlooked stakeholder group, namely, the firm’s employees. First, we present a novel dataset that uses online employee reviews to capture employee satisfaction. We employ LDA to identify salient aspects in employees’ reviews, and manually infer one latent topic that appears to be associated with the firm’s outlook. Second, we create a composite document by aggregating employee reviews for each firm and measure employee sentiment as the polarity of the composite document using the General Inquirer dictionary to count positive and negative terms. Finally, we define employee satisfaction as a weighted combination of the firm outlook topic cluster and employee sentiment. The results of our joint aspect-polarity model suggest that it may be beneficial for investors to incorporate a measure of employee satisfaction into their method for forecasting firm earnings
Kang-Redner Anomaly in Cluster-Cluster Aggregation
The large time, small mass, asymptotic behavior of the average mass
distribution \pb is studied in a -dimensional system of diffusing
aggregating particles for . By means of both a renormalization
group computation as well as a direct re-summation of leading terms in the
small reaction-rate expansion of the average mass distribution, it is shown
that \pb \sim \frac{1}{t^d} (\frac{m^{1/d}}{\sqrt{t}})^{e_{KR}} for , where and . In two
dimensions, it is shown that \pb \sim \frac{\ln(m) \ln(t)}{t^2} for . Numerical simulations in two dimensions supporting the analytical
results are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Revtex
Temperature dependence of single particle excitations in a S=1 chain: exact diagonalization calculations compared to neutron scattering experiments
Exact diagonalization calculations of finite antiferromagnetic spin-1
Heisenberg chains at finite temperatures are presented and compared to a recent
inelastic neutron scattering experiment for temperatures T up to 7.5 times the
intrachain exchange constant J. The calculations show that the excitations at
the antiferromagnetic point q=1 and at q=0.5 remain resonant up to at least
T=2J, confirming the recent experimental observation of resonant
high-temperature domain wall excitations. The predicted first and second
moments are in good agreement with experiment, except at temperatures where
three-dimensional spin correlations are most important. The ratio of the
structure factors at q=1 and at q=0.5 is well predicted for the paramagnetic
infinite-temperature limit. For T=2J, however, we found that the experimentally
observed intensity is considerably less than predicted. This suggests that
domain wall excitations on different chains interact up to temperatures of the
order of the spin band width.Comment: 9 pages revtex, submitted to PR
Eruptions of Magnetic Ropes in Two Homologous Solar Events on 2002 June 1 and 2: a Key to Understanding of an Enigmatic Flare
The goal of this paper is to understand the drivers, configurations, and
scenarios of two similar eruptive events, which occurred in the same solar
active region 9973 on 2002 June 1 and 2. The June 2 event was previously
studied by Sui, Holman, and Dennis (2006, 2008), who concluded that it was
challenging for popular flare models. Using multi-spectral data, we analyze a
combination of the two events. Each of the events exhibited an evolving
cusp-like feature. We have revealed that these apparent ``cusps'' were most
likely mimicked by twisted magnetic flux ropes, but unlikely to be related to
the inverted Y-like magnetic configuration in the standard flare model. The
ropes originated inside a funnel-like magnetic domain whose base was bounded by
an EUV ring structure, and the top was associated with a coronal null point.
The ropes appear to be the major drivers for the events, but their rise was not
triggered by reconnection in the coronal null point. We propose a scenario and
a three-dimensional scheme for these events in which the filament eruptions and
flares were caused by interaction of the ropes.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure
General boundary conditions for the envelope function in multiband k.p model
We have derived general boundary conditions (BC) for the multiband envelope
functions (which do not contain spurious solutions) in semiconductor
heterostructures with abrupt heterointerfaces. These BC require the
conservation of the probability flux density normal to the interface and
guarantee that the multiband Hamiltonian be self--adjoint. The BC are energy
independent and are characteristic properties of the interface. Calculations
have been performed of the effect of the general BC on the electron energy
levels in a potential well with infinite potential barriers using a coupled two
band model. The connection with other approaches to determining BC for the
envelope function and to the spurious solution problem in the multiband k.p
model are discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev. B 65, March 15

Distribution of exchange energy in a bond-alternating S=1 quantum spin chain
The quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating S=1 quantum antiferromagnet NTENP
is studied by single crystal inelastic neutron scattering. Parameters of the
measured dispersion relation for magnetic excitations are compared to existing
numerical results and used to determine the magnitude of bond-strength
alternation. The measured neutron scattering intensities are also analyzed
using the 1st-moment sum rules for the magnetic dynamic structure factor, to
directly determine the modulation of ground state exchange energies. These
independently determined modulation parameters characterize the level of spin
dimerization in NTENP. First-principle DMRG calculations are used to study the
relation between these two quantities.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
