Examining Gender Differences in Pain Treatment Recommendations
poster abstractUnderstanding how pain treatment decisions are made has important clinical implications for healthcare. Research suggests that men and women receive disparate pain care, however, little is known about the specific treatment recommendations that are differentially made for men and women. The purpose of this study was to examine differences between the types of pain treatments recommended for men and women. Undergraduate psychology students from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the University of North Texas (UNT) (n=621) made treatment recommendations for 8 chronic pain patients after reading a vignette describing the patient’s pain and watching a video of each patient completing a pain-inducing task (i.e., transition between sitting and standing). Participants made pain treatment recommendations for each patient using separate 0-100 visual analogue scales (VASs). Dependent samples t-tests indicated that participants were more likely to recommend workplace accommodations (t(620)= -3.05, p= .002, d= 0.17), disability compensation (t(620)= -7.77, p< .001, d= 0.44), and opioid medications (t(620)= -5.16, p< .001, d= 0.29) for men compared to women. Moreover, participants were more likely to recommend psychological therapy (t(620)= 4.59, p< .001, d= 0.26), rest (t(620)= 7.80, p< .001, d= 0.44), and diet/exercise (t(620)= 2.97, p= .003, d= 0.17) for women compared to men. These results are consistent with social psychological theories of gender-based stereotyping and suggest that men’s pain was perceived to be more legitimate, severe, and disabling than was women’s pain. Future studies are needed to examine how these differences affect pain outcomes and whether knowledge of these factors can improve training for future health care providers

Preventing “a virological Hiroshima”: Cold War press coverage of biological weapons disarmament
This article examines representations of biological weapons during a crucial period in the recent history of this form of warfare. The study draws on a corpus of newspaper articles from the US New York Times and the UK Times and Guardian written around the time of the negotiation period of the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention, the international treaty banning this form of warfare. We argue that a conventional discourse can be found wherein biological weapons are portrayed as morally offensive, yet highly effective and militarily attractive. Interwoven with this discourse, however, is a secondary register which depicts biological weapons as ineffective, unpredictable and of questionable value for the military. We finish with a somewhat more speculative consideration of the significance of these discourses by asking what might have been at stake when journalists and other writers deployed such differing representations of biological warfare
Characterization of Clinically-Attenuated Burkholderia mallei by Whole Genome Sequencing: Candidate Strain for Exclusion from Select Agent Lists

Research with this pathogen has been hampered in part by constraints of Select Agent regulations for safety reasons. Whole genomic sequencing (WGS) is an apt approach to characterize newly discovered or poorly understood microbial pathogens. genome. Therefore, the strain by itself is unlikely to revert naturally to its virulent phenotype. There were other genes present in one strain and not the other and vice-versa. was both avirulent in the natural host ponies, and did not possess T3SS associated genes may be fortuitous to advance biodefense research. The deleted virulence-essential T3SS is not likely to be re-acquired naturally. These findings may provide a basis for exclusion of SAVP1 from the Select Agent regulation or at least discussion of what else would be required for exclusion. This exclusion could accelerate research by investigators not possessing BSL-3 facilities and facilitate the production of reagents such as antibodies without the restraints of Select Agent regulation
Insight into Microevolution of Yersinia pestis by Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats
BACKGROUND: Yersinia pestis, the pathogen of plague, has greatly influenced human history on a global scale. Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR), an element participating in immunity against phages' invasion, is composed of short repeated sequences separated by unique spacers and provides the basis of the spoligotyping technology. In the present research, three CRISPR loci were analyzed in 125 strains of Y. pestis from 26 natural plague foci of China, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia were analyzed, for validating CRISPR-based genotyping method and better understanding adaptive microevolution of Y. pestis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using PCR amplification, sequencing and online data processing, a high degree of genetic diversity was revealed in all three CRISPR elements. The distribution of spacers and their arrays in Y. pestis strains is strongly region and focus-specific, allowing the construction of a hypothetic evolutionary model of Y. pestis. This model suggests transmission route of microtus strains that encircled Takla Makan Desert and ZhunGer Basin. Starting from Tadjikistan, one branch passed through the Kunlun Mountains, and moved to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Another branch went north via the Pamirs Plateau, the Tianshan Mountains, the Altai Mountains and the Inner Mongolian Plateau. Other Y. pestis lineages might be originated from certain areas along those routes. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: CRISPR can provide important information for genotyping and evolutionary research of bacteria, which will help to trace the source of outbreaks. The resulting data will make possible the development of very low cost and high-resolution assays for the systematic typing of any new isolate
