XYZ-polarisation analysis of diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from single crystals
Studies of diffuse magnetic scattering largely benefit from the use of a
multi-detector covering wide scattering angles. Therefore, the different
contributions to the diffuse scattering that originate from magnetic, nuclear
coherent, and nuclear spin-incoherent scattering can be separated by the
so-called XYZ-polarization analysis. In the past this method has been
successfully applied to the analysis of diffuse scattering by polycrystalline
samples of magnetic disordered materials. Single crystal studies that exploit
the vector properties of spin correlations are of particular interest for
furthering our understanding of frustration effects in magnetism. Based on the
symmetry properties of polarised scattering a suitable extension of the
conventional XYZ method has been derived, which allows for the complete
separation and the analysis of features of diffuse magnetic scattering from

Equilibrium states and invariant measures for random dynamical systems
Random dynamical systems with countably many maps which admit countable
Markov partitions on complete metric spaces such that the resulting Markov
systems are uniformly continuous and contractive are considered. A
non-degeneracy and a consistency conditions for such systems, which admit some
proper Markov partitions of connected spaces, are introduced, and further
sufficient conditions for them are provided. It is shown that every uniformly
continuous Markov system associated with a continuous random dynamical system
is consistent if it has a dominating Markov chain. A necessary and sufficient
condition for the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure for such
a non-degenerate system with a dominating Markov chain and a finite (16) is
given. The condition is also sufficient if the non-degeneracy is weakened with
the consistency condition. A further sufficient condition for the existence of
an invariant measure for such a consistent system which involves only the
properties of the dominating Markov chain is provided. In particular, it
implies that every such a consistent system with a finite Markov partition and
a finite (16) has an invariant Borel probability measure. A bijective map
between these measures and equilibrium states associated with such a system is
established in the non-degenerate case. Some properties of the map and the

Indomethacin decreases viscosity of gallbladder bile in patients with cholesterol gallstone disease
There is experimental evidence that inhibition of cyclooxygenase with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may decrease cholesterol gall-stone formation and mitigate biliary pain in gall-stone patients. The mechanisms by which NSAIDs exert these effect are unclear. In a prospective, controlled clinical trial we examined the effects of oral indomethacin on the composition of human gall-bladder bile. The study included 28 patients with symptomatic cholesterol or mixed gallstones. Of these, 8 were treated with 3 × 25 mg indomethacin daily for 7 days prior to elective cholecystectomy while 20 received no treatment and served as controls. Bile and tissue samples from the gallbladder were obtained during cholecystectomy. Indomethacin tissue levels in the gallbladder mucosa, as assessed by HPLC, were 1.05±0.4 ng/mg wet weight, a concentration known to inhibit effectively cyclooxygenase activity. Nevertheless, no differences between the treated and untreated groups were found in the concentrations of biliary mucus glycoprotein (0.94±0.27 versus 0.93±0.32 mg/ml) or total protein (5.8±0.9 versus 6.4±1.3 mg/ml), cholesterol saturation (1.3±0.2 versus 1.5±0.2), or nucleation time (2.0±3.0 versus 1.5±2.0 days). However, biliary viscosity, measured using a low-shear rotation viscosimeter, was significantly lower in patients receiving indomethacin treatment (2.9±0.6 versus 5.6±1.2 mPa.s; P < 0.02). In conclusion, in man oral indomethacin decreases bile viscosity without alteration of bile lithogenicity or biliary mucus glycoprotein content. Since mucus glycoproteins are major determinants of bile viscosity, an alteration in mucin macromolecular composition may conceivably cause the indomethacin-induced decrease in biliary viscosity and explain the beneficial effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in gallstone disease
Extension of nano-confined DNA: quantitative comparison between experiment and theory
The extension of DNA confined to nanochannels has been studied intensively
and in detail. Yet quantitative comparisons between experiments and model
calculations are difficult because most theoretical predictions involve
undetermined prefactors, and because the model parameters (contour length, Kuhn
length, effective width) are difficult to compute reliably, leading to
substantial uncertainties. Here we use a recent asymptotically exact theory for
the DNA extension in the "extended de Gennes regime" that allows us to compare
experimental results with theory. For this purpose we performed new
experiments, measuring the mean DNA extension and its standard deviation while
varying the channel geometry, dye intercalation ratio, and ionic buffer
strength. The experimental results agree very well with theory at high ionic
strengths, indicating that the model parameters are reliable. At low ionic
strengths the agreement is less good. We discuss possible reasons. Our approach
allows, in principle, to measure the Kuhn length and effective width of a

Dynamics of entropy and nonclassical properties of the state of a -type three-level atom interacting with a single-mode cavity field with intensity-dependent coupling in a Kerr medium
In this paper, we study the interaction between a three-level atom and a
quantized single-mode field with intensity-dependent coupling in a Kerr medium.
The three-level atom is considered to be in a -type configuration.
Under particular initial conditions, which may be prepared for the atom and
the field, the dynamical state vector of the entire system will be explicitly
obtained, for arbitrary nonlinearity function associated to any physical
system.
Then, after evaluating the variation of the field entropy against time, we
will investigate the quantum statistics as well as some of the nonclassical
properties of the introduced state. During our calculations we investigate the
effects of intensity-dependent coupling, Kerr medium and detuning parameters on
the depth and domain of the nonclassicality features of the atom-field state
vector. Finally, we compare our obtained results with those of -type

Alternative Interpretation of Sharply Rising E0 Strengths in Transitional Regions
It is shown that strong 0+2 -> 0+1 E0 transitions provide a clear signature
of phase transitional behavior in finite nuclei. Calculations using the IBA
show that these transition strengths exhibit a dramatic and robust increase in
spherical-deformed shape transition regions, that this rise matches well the
existing data, that the predictions of these E0 transitions remain large in
deformed nuclei, and that these properties are intrinsic to the way that
collectivity and deformation develop through the phase transitional region in
the model, arising from the specific d-boson coherence in the wave functions,
and that they do not necessarily require the explicit mixing of normal and
intruder configurations from different IBA spaces.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Entanglement Measures under Symmetry
We show how to simplify the computation of the entanglement of formation and
the relative entropy of entanglement for states, which are invariant under a
group of local symmetries. For several examples of groups we characterize the
state spaces, which are invariant under these groups. For specific examples we
calculate the entanglement measures. In particular, we derive an explicit
formula for the entanglement of formation for UU-invariant states, and we find
a counterexample to the additivity conjecture for the relative entropy of

Wavelets in mathematical physics: q-oscillators
We construct representations of a q-oscillator algebra by operators on Fock
space on positive matrices. They emerge from a multiresolution scaling
construction used in wavelet analysis. The representations of the Cuntz Algebra
arising from this multiresolution analysis are contained as a special case in

Cosmic-ray Monte Carlo predictions for forward particle production in p-p, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC
We present and compare the predictions of various cosmic-ray Monte Carlo
models for the energy (dE/deta) and particle (dN/deta) flows in p-p, p-Pb and
Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s) = 14, 8.8, and 5.5 TeV respectively, in the range
covered by forward LHC detectors like CASTOR or TOTEM (5.2<|eta|<6.6) and ZDC
