Hidden Markov Models and their Application for Predicting Failure Events
We show how Markov mixed membership models (MMMM) can be used to predict the
degradation of assets. We model the degradation path of individual assets, to
predict overall failure rates. Instead of a separate distribution for each
hidden state, we use hierarchical mixtures of distributions in the exponential
family. In our approach the observation distribution of the states is a finite
mixture distribution of a small set of (simpler) distributions shared across
all states. Using tied-mixture observation distributions offers several
advantages. The mixtures act as a regularization for typically very sparse
problems, and they reduce the computational effort for the learning algorithm
since there are fewer distributions to be found. Using shared mixtures enables
sharing of statistical strength between the Markov states and thus transfer
learning. We determine for individual assets the trade-off between the risk of
failure and extended operating hours by combining a MMMM with a partially
observable Markov decision process (POMDP) to dynamically optimize the policy

MicroRNA 744-3p promotes MMP-9-mediated metastasis by simultaneously suppressing PDCD4 and PTEN in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
MicroRNA controls cancer invasion by governing the expression of gene regulating migration and invasion. Here, we reported a novel regulatory pathway controlled by miR-744-3p, which enhanced expression of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). We profiled the differential micoRNA expression pattern in LSCC cell lines and normal epithelial cultures derived from the head and neck mucosa using microRNA microarray. MiR-7-1-3p, miR-196a/b and miR-744-3p were expressed differentially in the LSCC cell lines. Subsequent validation using real-time PCR revealed that high miR-744-3p level was positively correlated with regional lymph node metastasis of LSCC. Real-time cellular kinetic analysis showed that suppressing miR-744-3p could inhibit migration and invasion of LSCC cell lines and reduce the number of lung metastatic nodules in nude mice modules. In silico analysis revealed that miR-744-3p targeted 2 distinct signaling cascades which eventually upregulated MMP-9 expression in LSCC. First, miR-744-3p could suppress programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), a direct suppressor of NF-κB (p65). PDCD4 could also prevent AKT activation and suppress MMP-9 expression. Further, suppressing miR-744-3p expression could restore phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression. PTEN could inhibit AKT activation and inhibit MMP-9 expression in LSCC cells. The results revealed that suppressing miR-744-3p was effective to inhibit LSCC metastasis by inactivating AKT/mTOR and NF-κB (p65) signaling cascade. Targeting miR-744-3p could be a valuable therapeutic intervention to suppress the aggressiveness of LSCC.published_or_final_versio
Primary retroperitoneal mullerian adenocarcinoma
Mullerian tumors are extremely rare malignancies in the retroperitoneum. We report a case of a 46-year old woman who presented with an eight year history of lower abdominal mass. Ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a 15×10 cm cystic mass in the left lower retroperitoneum. As serial percutaneous needle aspiration cytology was negative for malignancy, she was observed for seven years. Eleven months ago, the mass was excised. The histopathology was reported as mucinous adenocarcinoma of the retroperitoneum. Six cycles of intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy was administered during the last six months after diagnosis of recurrence by aspiration cytology and high serum tumor markers (CEA, CA19-9). A few days ago, positron emission tomographic (PET) scanning showed evidence of local recurrence and single vertebral metastasis, so she was admitted again for systemic chemotherapy. Meticulous revision of additional sections of the tumor revealed papillary, serous, mucinous, and endometrioid subtypes of the mullerian adenocarcinoma. To our knowledge, there has been no similar case described in the literature
Experimental measurement-based quantum computing beyond the cluster-state model
The paradigm of measurement-based quantum computation opens new experimental
avenues to realize a quantum computer and deepens our understanding of quantum
physics. Measurement-based quantum computation starts from a highly entangled
universal resource state. For years, clusters states have been the only known
universal resources. Surprisingly, a novel framework namely quantum computation
in correlation space has opened new routes to implement measurement-based
quantum computation based on quantum states possessing entanglement properties
different from cluster states. Here we report an experimental demonstration of
every building block of such a model. With a four-qubit and a six-qubit state
as distinct from cluster states, we have realized a universal set of
single-qubit rotations, two-qubit entangling gates and further Deutsch's
algorithm. Besides being of fundamental interest, our experiment proves
in-principle the feasibility of universal measurement-based quantum computation
without using cluster states, which represents a new approach towards the

Crosstalk analysis of carbon nanotube bundle interconnects
Carbon nanotube (CNT) has been considered as an ideal interconnect material for replacing copper for future nanoscale IC technology due to its outstanding current carrying capability, thermal conductivity, and mechanical robustness. In this paper, crosstalk problems for single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) bundle interconnects are investigated; the interconnect parameters for SWCNT bundle are calculated first, and then the equivalent circuit has been developed to perform the crosstalk analysis. Based on the simulation results using SPICE simulator, the voltage of the crosstalk-induced glitch can be reduced by decreasing the line length, increasing the spacing between adjacent lines, or increasing the diameter of SWCNT
