    Effect of induction of subacute ruminal acidosis on milk fat profile and rumen parameters

    High-concentrate diets can lead to subacute ruminal acidosis and are known to result in changes of the ruminal fermentation pattern and mammary secretion of fatty acids. The objective of this paper is to describe modifications in milk fatty acid proportions, particularly odd- and branched-chain fatty acids and rumen biohydrogenation intermediates, associated with rumen parameters during a 6-wk subacute ruminal acidosis induction protocol with 12 ruminally fistulated multiparous cows. The protocol involved a weekly gradual replacement of a standard dairy concentrate with a wheat-based concentrate (610 g of wheat/kg of concentrate) during the first 5 wk and an increase in the total amount of concentrate in wk 6. Before the end of induction wk 6, cows were switched to a control diet because 7 cows showed signs of sickness. The pH was measured continuously by an indwelling pH probe. Milk and rumen samples were taken on d 2 and 7 of each week. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed model and by principal component analysis. A pH decrease occurred after the first concentrate switch but rumen parameters returned to the original values and remained stable until wk 5. In wk 5 and 6, rumen pH values were indicative of increasing acidotic conditions. After switching to the control diet in wk 6; rumen pH values rapidly achieved normal values. Odd- and branched-chain fatty acids and C18:1 trans-10 increased with increasing amount of concentrate in the diet, whereas C18:1 trans-11 decreased. Four fatty acids [C18:1 trans-10, C15:0 and C17:0+C17:1 cis-9 (negative loadings), and iso C14:0 (positive loading)] largely correlated with the first principal component (PC1); with cows spread along the PC1 axis. The first 4 wk of the induction experiment showed variation across the second principal component (PC2) only, with high loadings of anteiso C13:0 (negative loading) and C18:2 cis-9,trans-11 and C18:1 trans-11 (positive loadings). Weeks 5 and 6 deviated from PC2 and tended toward the negative PC1 axis. A discriminant analysis using a stepwise approach indicated the main fatty acids discriminating between the control and acidotic samples as iso C13:0, iso C16:0, and C18:2 cis-9. trans-11 rather than milk fat content. or C18:1 trans-10; which have been used before as indicators of acidosis. This shows that specific milk fatty acids have potential in discriminating acidotic cases

    Search Result Diversification in Short Text Streams

    We consider the problem of search result diversification for streams of short texts. Diversifying search results in short text streams is more challenging than in the case of long documents, as it is difficult to capture the latent topics of short documents. To capture the changes of topics and the probabilities of documents for a given query at a specific time in a short text stream, we propose a dynamic Dirichlet multinomial mixture topic model, called D2M3, as well as a Gibbs sampling algorithm for the inference. We also propose a streaming diversification algorithm, SDA, that integrates the information captured by D2M3 with our proposed modified version of the PM-2 (Proportionality-based diversification Method -- second version) diversification algorithm. We conduct experiments on a Twitter dataset and find that SDA statistically significantly outperforms state-of-the-art non-streaming retrieval methods, plain streaming retrieval methods, as well as streaming diversification methods that use other dynamic topic models

    Unusual reticulin staining pattern in well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Special stains, such as reticulin stain and CD34 immunostain, are very helpful in the diagnosis of well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Most studies have shown that absent or decreased reticulin stain or an abnormal reticulin pattern with widened trabeculae is reliable for the diagnosis of well-differentiated HCC.</p> <p>Case report</p> <p>We report here two cases of well differentiated HCC with an unusual reticulin staining pattern. A strongly positive reticulin network was preserved within the tumor, which surrounded individual tumor cells in a monolayered trabecular pattern. At the same time, an increased CD34 stain was present in the tumor.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This unusual reticulin pattern represents part of the diverse reticulin staining patterns seen in HCC. Although this staining pattern is rare, it should be recognized when diagnosing well-differentiated HCC in small samples such as cellblock of fine needle aspiration or small core biopsies.</p

    Motor skill learning in the middle-aged: limited development of motor chunks and explicit sequence knowledge

    The present study examined whether middle-aged participants, like young adults, learn movement patterns by preparing and executing integrated sequence representations (i.e., motor chunks) that eliminate the need for external guidance of individual movements. Twenty-four middle-aged participants (aged 55–62) practiced two fixed key press sequences, one including three and one including six key presses in the discrete sequence production task. Their performance was compared with that of 24 young adults (aged 18–28). In the middle-aged participants motor chunks as well as explicit sequence knowledge appeared to be less developed than in the young adults. This held especially with respect to the unstructured 6-key sequences in which most middle-aged did not develop independence of the key-specific stimuli and learning seems to have been based on associative learning. These results are in line with the notion that sequence learning involves several mechanisms and that aging affects the relative contribution of these mechanisms

    We examine the role of space-time geometry in the non-adiabatic collapse of a star dissipating energy in the form of radial heat flow, studying its evolution under different initial conditions. The collapse of a star with interior comprising of a homogeneous perfect fluid is compared with that of a star filled with inhomogeneous imperfect fluid with anisotropic pressure. Both the configurations are spherically symmetric, however, in the latter case, the physical space t=constantt= constant of the configurations is assumed to be inhomogeneous endowed with spheroidal or pseudo-spheroidal geometry. It is observed that as long as the collapse is shear-free, its evolution depends only on the mass and size of the star at the onset of collapse.Comment: To appear in Pramana- j. of physic

    Dynamics in cardiac surgery:trends in population characteristics and the performance of the EuroSCORE II over time

    OBJECTIVESThe aim of this study was to investigate the performance of the EuroSCORE II over time and dynamics in values of predictors included in the model.METHODSA cohort study was performed using data from the Netherlands Heart Registration. All cardiothoracic surgical procedures performed between 1 January 2013 and 31 December 2019 were included for analysis. Performance of the EuroSCORE II was assessed across 3-month intervals in terms of calibration and discrimination. For subgroups of major surgical procedures, performance of the EuroSCORE II was assessed across 12-month time intervals. Changes in values of individual EuroSCORE II predictors over time were assessed graphically.RESULTSA total of 103 404 cardiothoracic surgical procedures were included. Observed mortality risk ranged between 1.9% [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.6–2.4] and 3.6% (95% CI 2.6–4.4) across 3-month intervals, while the mean predicted mortality risk ranged between 3.4% (95% CI 3.3–3.6) and 4.2% (95% CI 3.9–4.6). The corresponding observed:expected ratios ranged from 0.50 (95% CI 0.46–0.61) to 0.95 (95% CI 0.74–1.16). Discriminative performance in terms of the c-statistic ranged between 0.82 (95% CI 0.78–0.89) and 0.89 (95% CI 0.87–0.93). The EuroSCORE II consistently overestimated mortality compared to observed mortality. This finding was consistent across all major cardiothoracic surgical procedures. Distributions of values of individual predictors varied broadly across predictors over time. Most notable trends were a decrease in elective surgery from 75% to 54% and a rise in patients with no or New York Heart Association I class heart failure from 27% to 33%.CONCLUSIONSThe EuroSCORE II shows good discriminative performance, but consistently overestimates mortality risks of all types of major cardiothoracic surgical procedures in the Netherlands
