    The resource appraisal survey of clupeids in Kainji Lake, Nigeria

    This study includes an analysis of the trawl survey that was carried out by the Kainji Lake Fisheries Promotion Project in May, 1997. The objective of the survey was to assess the biomass and the potential yield of clupeids and the carrying capacity of the beach seine fishery in the entire Kainji Lake (Nigeria). The biomass of the beach seine by-catch was also estimated. The density (kg /km super(3)) of the clupeids was higher in the Bussa and Foge than in the other stations. The lowest density of clupeids was in the Anfani station followed by Jetty, both in the southern basin. These stations were the deepest parts of all the areas trawled, measuring between 37-120 m of depth. There was an inverse correlation between depth trawled and the catch rates of clupeids, though the correlation was poor. The average annual biomass of the clupeids was estimated at 36,769.85 Mt in the entire Lake with an MSY of 11,705.95 Mt. The smaller species, Sierrathrissa leonensis, made up about 97% of the total clupeid population in the lake and occurred at a shallower depth than the larger species Pellonula afzeliusi. From the clupeid production statistics in 1996, it is estimated that the MSY is already overshot by 34%. Therefore, about 698 beach seines instead of the present 810 would be sufficient for sustainable exploitation of the clupeid stocks. Because of the substantial by-catch in the beach seines, this fishing method was banned from Kainji Lake in 1997. An offshore open water seine net is recommended to replace the beach seines on the lake. The number of these nets should not exceed 500. The current ban on beach seine is supported by this study. Nevertheless, and since the ban may not be 100% effective, effort should concentrate on maintaining that the number of beach seines must be kept at most at the present level. Recommendation is made against the introduction of the pair trawling not only from an economic point of view but also for resource conservation, legal and social reasons. The development of this fishery could pose a serious danger to continuity of stocks. It is proposed that priority be given to the development of an open water seine which is at the same level of exploitation as the beach seine and requires similar cost to acquire.     Charm multiplicity and the branching ratios of inclusive charmless b quark decays in the general two-Higgs-doublet models

    In the framework of general two-Higgs-doublet models, we calculate the branching ratios of various inclusive charmless b decays by using the low energy effective Hamiltonian including next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and examine the current status and the new physics effects on the determination of the charm multiplicity ncn_c and semileptonic branching ratio BSLB_{SL}. Within the considered parameter space, the enhancement to the ratio BR(b→sg)BR(b \to s g) due to the charged-Higgs penguins can be as large as a factor of 8 (3) in the model III (II), while the ratio BR(b→nocharm)BR(b \to no charm) can be increased from the standard model prediction of 2.49% to 4.91% (2.99%) in the model III (II). Consequently, the value of BSLB_{SL} and ncn_c can be decreased simultaneously in the model III. The central value of BSLB_{SL} will be lowered slightly by about 0.003, but the ratio ncn_c can be reduced significantly from the theoretical prediction of nc=1.28±0.05n_c= 1.28 \pm 0.05 in the SM to nc=1.23±0.05n_c= 1.23 \pm 0.05, 1.18±0.051.18 \pm 0.05 for mH+=200,100m_{H^+}=200, 100 GeV, respectively. We find that the predicted ncn_c and the measured ncn_c now agree within roughly one standard deviation after taking into account the effects of gluonic charged Higgs penguins in the model III with a relatively light charged Higgs boson.Comment: 25 pages, Latex file, axodraw.sty, 6 figures.     This paper proposes a probabilistic power pinch analysis (PoPA) approach based on Monte–Carlo simulation (MCS) for energy management of hybrid energy systems uncertainty. The systems power grand composite curve is formulated with the chance constraint method to consider load stochasticity. In a predictive control horizon, the power grand composite curve is shaped based on the pinch analysis approach. The robust energy management strategy effected in a control horizon is inferred from the likelihood of a bounded predicted power grand composite curve, violating the pinch. Furthermore, the response of the system using the energy management strategies (EMS) of the proposed method is evaluated against the day-ahead (DA) and adaptive power pinch strategy

    Phenomenological Analysis of B->PP Decays with QCD Factorization

    In this paper, we study nonleptonic charmless B decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons within the frame of QCD factorization, including the contributions from the chirally enhanced power corrections and weak annihilation. Predictions for the CP-averaged branching ratios and CP-violating asymmetries are given. Within the reasonable range of the parameters, we find that our predictions for the branching ratios of B -> PP are consistent with the present experimental data. But because of the logarithmic divergences at the endpoints in the hard spectator scatterings and weak annihilation, there are still large uncertainties in these predictions.Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures. to appear in PR

    Charmless hadronic decays B→PP,PV,VVB \to PP, PV, VV and new physics effects in the general two-Higgs doublet models

    Based on the low-energy effective Hamiltonian with the generalized factorization, we calculate the new physics contributions to the branching ratios of the two-body charmless hadronic decays of BuB_u and BdB_d mesons induced by the new gluonic and electroweak charged-Higgs penguin diagrams in the general two-Higgs doublet models (models I, II and III). Within the considered parameter space, we find that: (a) the new physics effects from new gluonic penguin diagrams strongly dominate over those from the new Îł\gamma- and Z0Z^0- penguin diagrams; (b) in models I and II, new physics contributions to most studied B meson decay channels are rather small in size: from -15% to 20%; (c) in model III, however, the new physics enhancements to the penguin-dominated decay modes can be significant, ∌(30−200)\sim (30 -200)%, and therefore are measurable in forthcoming high precision B experiments; (d) the new physics enhancements to ratios {\cal B}(B \to K \etap) are significant in model III, ∌(35−70)\sim (35 -70)%, and hence provide a simple and plausible new physics interpretation for the observed unexpectedly large B \to K \etap decay rates; (e) the theoretical predictions for B(B→K+π){\cal B}(B \to K^+ \pi) and B(B→K0π+){\cal B}(B \to K^0 \pi^+) in model III are still consistent with the data within 2σ2\sigma errors; (f) the significant new physics enhancements to the branching ratios of B→K0π0,K∗η,K∗+π−,K+ϕ,K∗0ω,K∗+ϕB \to K^0 \pi^0, K^* \eta, K^{*+} \pi^-, K^+ \phi, K^{*0} \omega, K^{*+} \phi and K∗0ϕK^{*0} \phi decays are helpful to improve the agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions; (g) the theoretical predictions of B(B→PP,PV,VV){\cal B}(B \to PP, PV, VV) in the 2HDM's are generally consistent with experimental measurements and upper limits (9090% C.L.)Comment: 55 pages, Latex file, 17 PS and EPS figures.     Semi-inclusive B Decays and Direct CP Violation in QCD Factorization

    We have systematically investigated the semi-inclusive B decays B->MX, which are manifestations of the quark decay b->Mq, within the framework of QCD-improved factorization. These decays are theoretically clean and have distinctive experimental signatures. We focus on a class of these that do not require any form factor information and therefore may be especially suitable for extracting information on the angles α\alpha and Îł\gamma of the unitarity triangle. The nonfactorizable effects, such as vertex-type and penguin-type corrections to the two-body b decay and hard spectator corrections to the 3-body decay are calculable in the heavy quark limit. QCD factorization is applicable when the emitted meson is a light meson or a charmonium. We discuss the issue of the CPT constraint on partial rate asymmetries. The strong phase coming from final-state rescattering due to hard gluon exchange between the final states can induce large rate asymmetries for tree-dominated color-suppressed modes (π0,ρ0,ω)Xsˉ(\pi^0,\rho^0,\omega)X_{\bar s}. The nonfactorizable hard spectator interactions in the 3-body decay, though phase-space suppressed, are extremely important for the tree-dominated modes (π0,ρ0,ω)Xsˉ,ϕX(\pi^0,\rho^0,\omega)X_{\bar s}, \phi X, JXs,JXJ X_s,J X and the penguin-dominated mode ωXssˉ\omega X_{s\bar s}. In fact, they are dominated by the hard spectator corrections. Our result for B(B→J/ψXs){\cal B} (B\to J/\psi X_s) is in agreement with experiment. The semi-inclusive decay modes: Bs0→(π0,ρ0,ω)XsˉB^0_s\to (\pi^0,\rho^0,\omega)X_{\bar s}, ρ0Xssˉ\rho^0X_{s\bar s}, B0→(K−X,K∗−X)B^0\to(K^-X,K^{*-}X) and B−→(K0Xs,K∗0Xs)B^-\to (K^0X_s,K^{*0}X_s) are the most promising ones in searching for direct CP violation. In fact, they have branching ratios of order 10−6−10−410^{-6}-10^{-4} and CP rate asymmetries of order (10−40)(10-40)%.Comment: 28 page

    Charmless B→PPB \to PP decays using flavor SU(3) symmetry

    The decays of BB mesons to a pair of charmless pseudoscalar (PP) mesons are analyzed within a framework of flavor SU(3). Symmetry breaking is taken into account in tree (TT) amplitudes through ratios of decay constants; exact SU(3) is assumed elsewhere. Acceptable fits to B→ππB \to \pi \pi and B→KπB \to K \pi branching ratios and CP asymmetries are obtained with tree, color-suppressed (CC), penguin (PP), and electroweak penguin (PEWP_{EW}) amplitudes. Crucial additional terms for describing processes involving η\eta and ηâ€Č\eta' include a large flavor-singlet penguin amplitude (SS) as proposed earlier and a penguin amplitude PtuP_{tu} associated with intermediate tt and uu quarks. For the B+→π+ηâ€ČB^+ \to \pi^+ \eta' mode a term StuS_{tu} associated with intermediate tt and uu quarks also may be needed. Values of the weak phase Îł\gamma are obtained consistent with an earlier analysis of B→VPB \to VP decays, where VV denotes a vector meson, and with other analyses of CKM parameters.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure.     Measurements of ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays into Vector- Tensor final states

    Decays of the ψ(2S)\psi(2S) into vector plus tensor meson final states have been studied with 14 million ψ(2S)\psi(2S) events collected with the BESII detector. Branching fractions of \psi(2S) \rt \omega f_{2}(1270), ρa2(1320)\rho a_2(1320), K∗(892)0Kˉ2∗(1430)0+c.c.K^*(892)^0\bar{K}^*_2(1430)^0+c.c. and ϕf2â€Č(1525)\phi f_2^{\prime}(1525) are determined. They improve upon previous BESI results and confirm the violation of the "12%" rule for ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays to VT channels with higher precision.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures and 2 table

    The B^- -> phi phi K^- decay rate with phi phi invariant mass below charm treshold

    We investigate the decay mechanism in the B^- -> phi phi K^- decay with the phi phi invariant mass below the charm threshold and in the neighborhood of the eta_c invariant mass region. Our approach is based on the use of factorization model and the knowledge of matrix elements of the weak currents. For the B meson weak transition we apply form factor formalism, while for the light mesons we use effective weak and strong Lagrangians. We find that the dominant contributions to the branching ratio come from the eta, eta' and eta(1490) pole terms of the penguin operators in the decay chains B^- -> eta (eta', eta(1490)) K^- -> phi phi K^-. Our prediction for the branching ratio is in agreement with the Belle's result.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
