Exploring collective leadership and coproduction: An empirical study

It draws from the public administration and leadership fields and a 2019 empirical study of public service collaboration in Scotland, UK. It is suggested that tensions generated by working within a New Public Management model combined with frustrations felt from current collaborative practice have motivated an exploration into alternative conceptions of leadership and different ways of working when collaborating. The findings reveal that collaboration can be strengthened through the application of four key processual and attitudinal modifications. This approach is described as working in an emergent and relational way while applying a systems and inquiry mind-set. It is the effect of the sum of these parts that boosts the intensity of collaborative work, offering a number of benefits, including an enriched and dynamic coproduction process embedded within its practice.https://doi.org/10.4018/978-1-7998-4975-9pubpu

Gambling with Laws and Ethics in Cyberspace

The online world, referred to by some as cyberspace, offers a wide variety of activities: reading written content, interacting with others, engaging with multimedia and playing games of various kinds, and obtaining goods and services. However, many will ignore the written agreements and laws that govern these activities, and because of this, cyberspace can turn into a dangerous place. This chapter explores a small sample of legal and ethical issues that can arise in the interface between cyberspaces and real places for those not paying attention to such matters. The authors note how laws in the physical world remain applicable in the “virtual” world, requiring knowledge of jurisdiction, and discuss the potential for creating systems that protect the user from harm by embedding adherence to laws and providing support for ethics. The authors further explain how such embedding can work to address the complex legalities and potential need for intervention in addictive situations in online gambling

Accelerated Aβ aggregation in the presence of GM1-ganglioside-accumulated synaptosomes of aged apoE4-knock-in mouse brain

AbstractAging and apolipoprotein E4 (apoE4) expression are strong risk factors for the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, their pathological roles remain to be clarified. In the process of AD development, the conversion of the nontoxic amyloid β-protein (Aβ) monomer to its toxic aggregates is a fundamental process. We previously hypothesized that Aβ aggregation is accelerated through the generation of GM1 ganglioside (GM1)-bound Aβ which acts as a seed for Aβ fibril formation. Here we report that GM1 level in detergent-resistant membrane microdomains (DRMs) of synaptosomes increased with age and that this increase was significantly pronounced in the apoE4- than the apoE3-knock-in mouse brain. Furthermore, we show that Aβ aggregation is markedly accelerated in the presence of the synaptosomes of the aged apoE4-knock-in mouse brain. These observations suggest that aging and apoE4 expression cooperatively accelerate Aβ aggregation in the brain through an increase in the level of GM1 in neuronal membranes
