Onset voltage shift due to non-zero Landau ground state level in coherent magnetotransport
Coherent electron transport in double-barrier heterostructures with parallel
electric and magnetic fields is analyzed theoretically and with the aid of a
quantum simulator accounting for 3-dimensional transport effects. The
onset-voltage shift induced by the magnetic field in resonant tunneling diodes,
which was previously attributed to the cyclotron frequency inside the
well is found to arise from an upward shift of the non-zero ground (lowest)
Landau state energy in the entire quantum region where coherent transport takes
place. The spatial dependence of the cyclotron frequency is accounted for and
verified to have a negligible impact on resonant tunneling for the device and
magnetic field strength considered. A correction term for the onset-voltage
shift arising from the magnetic field dependence of the chemical potential is
also derived. The Landau ground state with its nonvanishing finite harmonic
oscillator energy is verified however to be the principal
contributor to the onset voltage shift at low temperatures.Comment: 13 pages, and 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Relativity and EPR Entanglement: Comments
Recent experiment by Zhinden et al (Phys. Rev {\bf A} 63 02111, 2001)
purports to test compatibility between relativity and quantum mechanics in the
classic EPR setting. We argue that relativity has no role in the EPR argument
based solely on non-relativistic quantum formalism. It is suggested that this
interesting experiment may have significance to address fundamental questions

Influence of radiative damping on the optical-frequency susceptibility
Motivated by recent discussions concerning the manner in which damping
appears in the electric polarizability, we show that (a) there is a dependence
of the nonresonant contribution on the damping and that (b) the damping enters
according to the "opposite sign prescription." We also discuss the related
question of how the damping rates in the polarizability are related to
energy-level decay rates
The Dipole Coupling of Atoms and Light in Gravitational Fields
The dipole coupling term between a system of N particles with total charge
zero and the electromagnetic field is derived in the presence of a weak
gravitational field. It is shown that the form of the coupling remains the same
as in flat space-time if it is written with respect to the proper time of the
observer and to the measurable field components. Some remarks concerning the
connection between the minimal and the dipole coupling are given.Comment: 10 pages, LaTe
Lyapunov Potential Description for Laser Dynamics
We describe the dynamical behavior of both class A and class B lasers in
terms of a Lyapunov potential. For class A lasers we use the potential to
analyze both deterministic and stochastic dynamics. In the stochastic case it
is found that the phase of the electric field drifts with time in the steady
state. For class B lasers, the potential obtained is valid in the absence of
noise. In this case, a general expression relating the period of the relaxation
oscillations to the potential is found. We have included in this expression the
terms corresponding to the gain saturation and the mean value of the
spontaneously emitted power, which were not considered previously. The validity
of this expression is also discussed and a semi-empirical relation giving the
period of the relaxation oscillations far from the stationary state is proposed

The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model
The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the
successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the
close confinement of the bound state muonium () can be used as
an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a
search for additional interactions between leptons. Of special interest is the
lepton number violating process of sponteanous conversion of muonium to
