Automated Classification of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stellar Spectra using Artificial Neural Networks
Automated techniques have been developed to automate the process of
classification of objects or their analysis. The large datasets provided by
upcoming spectroscopic surveys with dedicated telescopes urges scientists to
use these automated techniques for analysis of such large datasets which are
now available to the community. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is one of such
surveys releasing massive datasets. We use Probabilistic Neural Network (PNN)
for automatic classification of about 5000 SDSS spectra into 158 spectral type

Selective Activation of Adenosine A2A Receptors on Immune Cells by a CD73-Dependent Prodrug Suppresses Joint Inflammation in Experimental Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Item does not contain fulltextAdenosine A(2A) receptor (A(2A)R) agonists are both highly effective anti-inflammatory agents and potent vasodilators. To separate these two activities, we have synthesized phosphorylated A(2A)R agonists (prodrugs) that require the presence of ecto-5'-nucleotidase (CD73) to become activated. In the model of collagen-induced arthritis, 2-(cyclohexylethylthio)adenosine 5'-monophosphate (chet-AMP), but not 2-(cyclohexylethylthio)adenosine (chet-adenosine), potently reduced inflammation as assessed by fluorine-19 ((19)F) magnetic resonance imaging and by histology. The prodrug effect was blunted by inhibition of CD73 and A(2A)R. The selectivity of drug action is due to profound up-regulation of CD73 and adenosine A(2A)R expression in neutrophils and inflammatory monocytes as found in recovered cells from the synovial fluid of arthritic mice. Plasma chet-adenosine was in the subnanomolar range when chet-AMP was applied, whereas concentrations required for vasodilation were about 100 times higher. Thus, chet-AMP is a potent immunosuppressant with negligible vasodilatory activity. These data suggest that phosphorylated A(2A)R agonists may serve as a promising new group of drugs for targeted immunotherapy of inflammation
Distribution, movements and diet of nocturnal fishes on temperate reefs
We counted nocturnal fishes both day and night, and monitored the position of tagged individuals on temperate reefs in New South Wales, Australia. Pempheris affinis and P. multiradiata were the most abundant nocturnal planktivores on Sydneyrsquos rocky reefs and showed great differences in diel migration behaviour. Both species were observed in deep shelter sites during the day (5–10thinspm), and most emerged into the water column at night. P. multiradiata was found to undergo extensive vertical and horizontal migrations. In contrast, P. affinis remained within daytime depth strata, with tagged individuals often moving less than 20thinspm at night. Tagged adult P. affinis returned to tagging sites for up to 7thinspweeks, indicating high site fidelity. Dietary analysis demonstrated that small and large pempherids differed in diet and the timing of foraging, suggesting a size-based transition from diurnal to nocturnal foraging. Stratified sampling of planktonic assemblages at different depths during the day and night showed spatial variation in the availability of prey items at different times of the day. Amphipods, the main prey of large fish, were only available during the night, and concentrated in shallow water, whereas decapod larvae, consumed mainly by small fish, were abundant day and night. Large P. affinis also fed on polychaetes, which were never found in the stomachs of P. multiradiata, suggesting that these species may have different prey requirements, or that these polychaetes are only found in deep water where foraging P. affinis were abundant. We found no general model for the Pempheridae. The movements and behaviour of nocturnal fishes varied greatly by species, and this may be due to differences in body size, and/or physiological (e.g. visual ability) and ecological constraints
