    Agronomic and Animal Performance of Different Tall Fescue Varieties

    The objective of the tall fescue breeding program is the development of varieties characterized by superior nutritive value (including reduced contents of perloline and loline alkaloids and minimal infestation of the fungal endophyte, Acremonium coenophialum), palatability, disease resistance, and adaptation through the utilization of intergeneric and interspecific hybrid derivatives of ryegrass and tall fescue species. Kentucky 31, Kenwell, and Kenhy were previously released from this breeding program. Johnstone tall fescue, developed cooperatively by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA-ARS, was released March 1, 1982 as a new variety. Johnstone is characterized as having low levels of perloline alkaloid and the fungal endophyte (Acremonium coenophialum) and improved forage quality during summer. It is expected that seed of Johnstone will be available commercially during 1985, and a good supply be available for /\u27 spring and summer 1986 plantings

    Developing a National Alfalfa Information System

    Using state-of-the-art telecommunication technologies, this project is developing a comprehensive knowledge resource for alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.); the National Alfalfa Information System (NAIS). This project will serve as an improved model for Extension educational programs. Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in the USA and grown worldwide for feeding millions of livestock and in many cropping systems. As a legume, it is important in sustaining the environment and the productivity of agriculture. Information needs are present in every state and internationally. The NAIS is being developed through national and international cooperation, putting the best science-based alfalfa information and expertise at the fingertips of producers, consultants, extension workers, instructors, researchers, and users. Collaboratively developed materials will reduce duplication of effort. To make the knowledge easy-to-use, educational design, communication, and information science professionals are working with alfalfa experts in creating a WWW system and Web-aware CD-ROM. To ensure content quality, peer-review by members of multiple professional societies is included. A significant result will be around-the-clock availability of up-to-date, easy-to-use, and peerreviewed information. Shared workload and the peer-review process can influence faculty morale, efficiency, and effectiveness, an adjunct to maximizing the utilization of alfalfa worldwide by making the best information readily available

    Metallurgical evaluation of a copper-based alloy for dental castings.

    The present study was designed to evaluate the metallurgical properties of an experimental, low-cost copper-zinc-aluminum-nickel alloy for dental castings. Some specimens were subjected to heat treatment after induction casting. The extent of corrosion was determined by measuring weight loss of specimens stored in a sodium sulfite solution. In the as-cast specimens, tests demonstrated the presence of three phases: the first consisted of copper-zinc-aluminum, the second was similar but lower in copper and aluminum, and the third consisted of an intermetallic compound of manganese-nickel-phosphorus. After heat treatment, the first phase remained relatively constant, the second was converted to Cu3Al, and the third increased in volume. The weight loss from the as-cast specimens was eight times that of the heat-treated specimens. It was concluded that the heat treatment substantially changed the microstructure and improved the corrosion resistance of the experimental alloy

    Effects of low blood alcohol levels on pilots' prioritisation of tasks during a radio navitation task

    Eight pilots flew a specified cross-country route using radio navigation in a flight simulator with simulated air traffic control. Four of the pilots flew with a low blood alcohol level (BAL; mean BAL = 20.63 mg%). Pilots' performance was compared in terms of flying performance, navigation, and radio communication. We hypothesized that the tasks most likely to be shed as a result of alcohol impairment would be those lower down in the task prioritization hierarchy of "aviate, navigate and communicate." This hypothesis was supported; alcohol was found to impair significantly pilots' radio communication. Results are discussed with reference to the piloting task and the implications for alcohol regulation in aviation

    Bioactive coatings are currently being plasma-sprayed on implant surfaces in order to optimize bone-implant interactions. However there are problems with the existing coating process, such as poor interfacial adhesion strength, alteration of coating properties, and the lack of an existing coating standard. To overcome some of the problems with the existing plasma-spraying process, investigators are working on other experimental coating methods to increase the adhesion strength as well as to have better control of the coating properties. This review will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of plasma spraying as well as the experimental coating processes

    Anxiety Related to Nonerotic Cognitive Distractions During Sexual Activity in Lesbian, Bisexual, and Heterosexual Women

    The authors recruited 25 bisexual, 25 lesbian, and 25 heterosexual college women to determine whether group differences exist in anxiety related to nonerotic cognitive distractions during sexual activity, as well as in variables contributing to the prediction of anxiety. Participants completed questionnaires assessing anxiety related to nonerotic cognitive distractions during sexual activity, as well as additional variables (e.g., religiosity and self-esteem). Bisexual women reported significantly greater disease-related anxiety than lesbians, and heterosexual women reported significantly greater anxiety pertaining to emotional/external concerns than bisexuals. In other analyses, lesbians had significantly more positive attitudes toward sex than did the bisexuals, and heterosexuals reported higher levels of religiosity than lesbians. Finally, bisexuals had higher levels of internalized heterosexism than lesbians, a level not significantly different from the level of the (by definition, noninternalized) heterosexism among the heterosexuals. Additional analyses clarified the multivariate relationships among these variables. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
